Chapter 311 – Return to the Capital

Kang Kang followed Jiang Junmo in the evening.

Lu Xia and Jiang Junmo had initially agreed that one of them would sleep during the first half of the night, and the other during the second half. However, neither of them managed to sleep during the first half of the night due to the crying of the child.

By the time the second half of the night arrived, Jiang Junmo let Lu Xia sleep first, while he stayed awake to watch over. As a result, when Lu Xia woke up, it was already dawn.

She peeked out and saw that Jiang Junmo was already packing things.

Lu Xia carefully examined him to see if he had any dark circles under his eyes.

After noticing her actions, Jiang Junmo smiled and said, “Don’t worry, I managed to catch a little nap last night too, so I’m not too tired.”

Lu Xia wasn’t entirely convinced and was annoyed at herself for sleeping so deeply.

However, it was too late to think about these things now. The train was about to reach the station, and she needed to get up as well.

After the two of them got up and freshened up, had a bit of food, Jiang Junmo checked his watch and said, “I estimate we’ll arrive in about an hour.”

Lu Xia nodded, feeling somewhat nervous, and asked, “Do you still remember the way after getting off the train?”

Jiang Junmo laughed, “Of course, don’t worry. I won’t get us lost. Besides, I’ve already sent a telegram to my family in advance. Grandpa should arrange for someone to pick us up.”

Upon hearing this, Lu Xia breathed a sigh of relief. She had been wondering how to take public transportation earlier.

When the broadcast announced the arrival at the Beijing station, Lu Xia and Jiang Junmo struggled to get off the train with Kang Kang in her arms and luggage in his hands. The several people in the same compartment had disappeared at some point.

Beijing’s train station was particularly large, and after disembarking, the place was bustling with people. It took them quite a while to reach the exit.

Lu Xia had been wondering how they would contact the people from the Jiang family who came to pick them up, especially since they didn’t have cell phones.

However, after they exited the station, they found many people holding name signs to pick up others.

And quickly, from the crowd, Lu Xia spotted their names.

It was a young man holding a cardboard sign, and his military uniform made him stand out.

Jiang Junmo seemed quite calm after seeing him.

He led the two of them straight over.

“Comrade, hello, I’m Jiang Junmo, and this is my wife, Lu Xia.”

The young man had already seen their photos before coming, but he was still a bit surprised to see them in person. They were indeed a good-looking couple!

He also looked at the child in Jiang Junmo’s arms and thought, even the child is so adorable!

So he quickly said, “Hello to both of you, I’m a security officer under Old General Jiang. You can call me Xiao Yu. It’s been a hard journey. The car is parked outside. Let’s go.”

With that, he reached out and took the luggage from Lu Xia’s hands. Lu Xia hesitated but had no choice but to let him.

This Xiao Yu seemed to be quite talkative. Throughout the journey, he engaged in a lot of conversation with them.

“Initially, Old General Jiang wanted to personally come to pick you up, but he was persuaded by Political Commissar Jiang not to. But I believe he should be waiting at home by now. The Old General has been looking forward to your return.”

Upon hearing this, both Jiang Junmo and Lu Xia couldn’t help but feel eager.

Soon, they spotted a jeep parked outside the train station. After Xiao Yu put their luggage in, he went to the front to drive. Jiang Junmo and Lu Xia sat in the back, with Kang Kang in the middle.

It was Kang Kang’s first time riding in a car, and he looked around curiously. He seemed to have regained his energy compared to when they had just disembarked.

Along the way, Jiang Junmo pointed out various buildings by the roadside, introducing them one by one to Kang Kang, who was fascinated.

Lu Xia glanced at the direction the car was heading—it seemed to be toward the West City District.

There was an old saying in Beijing: “The rich live in the East, and the noble live in the West.” It seemed that the Jiang family’s geographical location was quite good.

Chapter 312 – Grandfather Jiang

.

Lu Xia and Jiang Junmo hadn’t talked about these matters in detail, but she knew about his family members’ professions, and it was clear that they were not ordinary.

So, Lu Xia quietly asked Jiang Junmo, “Isn’t your grandfather retired and resting at a retreat? Why does he have security officers?”

Jiang Junmo explained, “The security officers were sent by the country to take care of my grandfather. Besides, the retreat is on Qin Island, quite far from Beijing. My grandfather usually goes there in the summer to avoid the heat.”

He continued explaining, “The place we’re going to now is where I lived from childhood to adulthood. After my parents passed away, we’ve been living with my grandfather and uncle’s family. We haven’t separated. Everyone has their own rooms there, and my uncle’s family treats us as their own.”

Lu Xia understood. Jiang Junmo seemed to care a lot about his uncle’s family, so she could treat his uncle and aunt as her own in-laws.

As they spoke, the car had already reached the West City District. Slowly, it entered a military compound. At the entrance, Lu Xia and Jiang Junmo registered, as unauthorized entry and exit were not allowed.

Once the registration was done, the car drove in and finally stopped in front of a small white building.

Before they could even get out of the car, a spirited old man walked briskly out of the yard.

Jiang Junmo was taken aback for a moment, then quickly opened the door and got out of the car, walking towards him.

He then embraced the old man, eyes reddening, “Grandpa, I’m back!”

At this moment, Grandpa Jiang’s eyes were also a bit moist, but when he saw his grandson, who had looked as if a gust of wind could blow him away before he went to the countryside, now strong and robust, he burst into laughter. He then patted him several times, satisfied to see him standing steady.

“Very good, not bad. It seems the trip to the countryside was worthwhile. You’ve grown strong, impressive!”

Grandpa Jiang continued to examine him closely, finally letting go of years of worry.

At this point, Lu Xia walked down with Kang Kang. Seeing the emotional scene, she didn’t know whether to greet them or not.

However, Grandpa Jiang quickly noticed Lu Xia and looked in her direction.

Jiang Junmo also realized this and quickly walked over, picking up Kang Kang and introducing them, “Grandpa, this is my wife, Lu Xia, and this is our child, Kang Kang.”

Lu Xia immediately smiled at him, “Hello, Grandpa.”

Kang Kang, who had been taught before getting off the car, also chimed in, “Hello, Great Grandpa!”

Grandpa Jiang’s face lit up upon hearing this, “Good, good! Both of you are good. You, this girl, you seem to be considerate, and you look good. You’re a good match for our family’s Junmo.”

He then turned his attention to Kang Kang, “This little guy has grown so big already. He’s calling me ‘Great Grandpa’ already?”

Jiang Junmo chuckled helplessly at this, “He’s almost three years old!”

Grandpa Jiang was even happier, “Great, great! This is wonderful. He’s much sturdier now than when you were his age. He really seems like a promising young one.”

Jiang Junmo was speechless. Was Grandpa treating his great-grandson like a little soldier?

Lu Xia couldn’t help but laugh; she found Grandpa Jiang quite amusing. He had a booming voice and seemed like a very robust person.

As they chatted, Grandpa Jiang finally remembered that they were still at the entrance. So, he said, “Let’s go, let’s go inside quickly. You must be exhausted after this journey.”

Lu Xia smiled, “It’s not too bad. We had sleeping berths, so it wasn’t that tiring.”

“Good to hear!”

Finally, the group entered the house, and by now, the neighbors who had been peeking out of their windows to see what was going on had returned to their homes.

However, news had already spread within the compound that the sickly young master of the Jiang family had returned from the countryside with his wife and child.
