Chapter 58 – Extra

Chen Luosong returned a little over a month later, a few days earlier than expected. After exiting the airport, he immediately spotted the person standing in the crowd.

It was Zhou Kaiji. Tall, dressed in a black hoodie and a baseball cap, holding a large bouquet of flowers, he stood out in every sense.

His eyes lit up when he saw Chen Luosong and he walked over with long strides.

The assistant, secretary, and entourage stood quietly on one side, pondering why this person would bring flowers to pick someone up.

And not just any flowers, but roses, each one in full bloom, vibrant and conspicuous. The only thing more radiant than the flowers was the smile of the person holding them.

Although it might have been their imagination, they all felt something was off, something unusual.

Chen Luosong took the bouquet and asked, “Why did you bring these?”

Zhou Kaiji looked down, naturally and skillfully intertwining his fingers with Chen Luosong’s empty hand, holding it firmly. Then he smiled and said, “I wanted to.”

Chen Luosong looked up at him.

Meeting his gaze, Zhou Kaiji looked away but didn’t loosen his grip.

After a brief moment of quick thinking, he looked back and said, “I thought I was already your boyfriend, Brother Chen.”

He asked, “Aren’t I?”

Chen Luosong didn’t pull his hand away.

“…”

The entourage, watching their usually stoic boss accept the bouquet without changing his expression, felt their minds racing. When they saw the two holding hands so naturally, their rapidly processing brains seemed to short-circuit.

It wasn’t just a question of whether it was odd.

Something significant must have happened without their knowledge.

After leaving the airport, they split into three cars, watching the two get into one vehicle and seeing it off.

It wasn’t until the car disappeared from sight and they got into their own cars that they finally grasped what had happened.

A collective “Wow” escaped them.

While the group was busy processing this, Zhou Kaiji, now unofficially confirmed as the boyfriend, and Chen Luosong headed back to the old mansion together.

The old mansion hadn’t changed, looking exactly as it did before, as if the past couple of years had never happened.

The butler had received news beforehand that they would be returning and was already waiting at the door. When he saw the two people getting out of the car, he greeted them.

Zhou Kaiji, holding flowers in one hand and helping someone out of the car with the other, smiled and said, “Uncle, we’re back.”

In the first few days after returning, Chen Luosong was adjusting to the time difference, and then he returned to work at the company.

Zhou Kaiji still needed to deal with matters concerning the Zhou family.

Over the past two years, things had become even more complicated, especially since Old Master Zhou’s health had deteriorated significantly. Those dubious relatives also began to show up more frequently.

Even though he did not intend to participate in the distribution of the inheritance, these people would come to him sooner or later. Rather than waiting for them to come to him, it was better to take the initiative and gain control.

After more than half a month of discussions and negotiations, he agreed to take over the Zhou family business and proposed his own conditions.

Not only those relatives, but even Old Master Zhou finally realized that they might have underestimated this son of his.

They originally thought he was just someone who had graduated from university a couple of years ago, but they forgot that he had been personally guided by someone from the Chen family for many years.

Playing the emotional card had no effect. Zhou Kaiji saw through their relationships clearly. He was well aware of the current situation of the Zhou family, with no capable successors and only a bunch of relatives who wanted more wealth but had no management skills.

This was more of a mutually beneficial collaboration than an inheritance of the family estate.

Zhou Kaiji’s goal was simple: he wanted a match of equal social standing.

His ambition was great; he did not just want to be a boyfriend.

He wanted a legitimate status.

In half a year, the Zhou family company gradually and smoothly transitioned into Zhou Kaiji’s hands, with all the restless relatives firmly suppressed.

From every aspect, he was more formidable than Old Master Zhou had been. Most importantly, he did not care about the thin blood ties.

In a little over a year, he fully took over the Zhou family company, and there was no one left to oppose him.

Old Master Zhou’s health was failing, but he still had some time left. Originally, there was no need for such urgency, but this year, others began to emerge.

Probably due to Yu Wen’s previous actions providing some inspiration, some people realized that the person they thought was a committed singleton might actually be open to marriage alliances. They repeatedly and subtly hinted at this in various situations, making their intentions quite clear.

He did not want another Yu Wen 2.0 to appear.

So, after yet another banquet, before others could surround him again, he left the venue with someone.

It was midsummer, and even in the evening, the air outside was still hot and the evening breeze felt warm.

They were on the terrace outside the hotel. As they walked to the edge, Chen Luosong leaned his back against the railing. He glanced sideways at the constant stream of cars and the bright tall buildings in the distance, then turned his head to look at the person who kept approaching.

The hand resting on one side of the railing reached out, and as he casually gestured, he realized that the person standing opposite him was now more than a head taller than him. He smiled and said, “So you’ve grown this tall.”

“Brother Chen,” Zhou Kaiji responded, then emphasized, “I’ve been an adult for a long time now.”

With his hair tousled by the wind, Chen Luosong smiled, “I know.”

Seeing his outstretched hand still in midair, Zhou Kaiji understood his intention and willingly lowered his head.

Chen Luosong half-closed his eyes and ruffled Zhou Kaiji’s hair.

However, once his hand was outstretched, he couldn’t pull it back. When he tried to withdraw, the person who had been allowing him to ruffle his hair raised his hand and grasped his wrist.

The grip was neither too tight nor too loose, just enough that he could easily break free if he wanted.

He didn’t pull away and instead looked up and asked, “What’s wrong?”

In the stifling night breeze, the person standing opposite suddenly leaned in, their brows and eyes coming closer with an aggressive demeanor.

On the quiet terrace, only the sound of the wind and the rustling of clothes could be heard.

With his back against the railing, passively enduring, Chen Luosong felt a cool touch on the fingers of one hand.

His half-closed eyes opened slightly, light-colored pupils meeting a pair of dark eyes, and saw the suppressed and surging emotions within.

This person’s breathing was erratic, and his heartbeat was fast.

During a brief moment of catching his breath, Zhou Kaiji, with his nose almost touching Chen Luosong’s, whispered, “Brother Chen, I want to apply for an upgrade.”

He was very ambitious.

When he was treated merely as a younger brother, he wanted to be the other person’s boyfriend. After becoming the boyfriend, he wanted to be the person’s real husband.

The person leaning against the railing was still catching his breath and didn’t respond immediately.

In the quiet space, the sounds of breathing and heartbeats became more pronounced. Listening to the increasingly rapid heartbeat by his ear, Chen Luosong finally took two more breaths, then smiled and hoarsely said, “Ask me again with a ring. Who taught you to act first and ask later?”

When he smiled, the corners of Zhou Kaiji’s mouth, which had been tightly pressed, finally relaxed. He also smiled and said, “Self-taught.”

——

The unattainable flower that had stood on a mountain peak for years had finally been picked.

The day after the banquet, someone noticed a diamond ring on the previously bare ring finger of a person who showed up for work as usual.

Within a single day, the news spread like wildfire throughout the company and the entire circle.

Initially, everyone speculated about who the other person might be, even wondering if it was a rekindled relationship with Yu Wen. However, they soon realized there was no need for speculation.

Because a certain someone from the Zhou family was showing off his ring to everyone he encountered, his face beaming with pride and satisfaction.

It turned out that this person had never been pure of intent from the beginning. With ambitious designs to rise to the top, he actually succeeded.

The engagement was set in summer, and the wedding was scheduled for autumn.

Wedding invitations were sent out in advance, accompanied by small gifts. The invitations were handwritten, and even the accompanying small gifts looked very exquisite, clearly custom-made and likely expensive.

The wedding was to be held at a manor in the outskirts of the city. The entire mountain where the manor was located belonged to the couple. The timing of the wedding was perfect, with the whole mountain covered in a golden blanket of ginkgo leaves.

Amidst the falling leaves, a grand convoy stretched from the foot of the mountain all the way to the top. At a glance, not only were the ginkgo trees everywhere, but also the long line of vehicles.

The wedding, from the invitations to the venue, was a testament to meticulous planning and extravagant spending.

Unexpectedly, Yu Wen also attended.

He came to the wedding of the person he almost married, watching as they exchanged rings with someone else, witnessing another person achieving what he had longed for.

As he had imagined, Chen Luosong looked perfect in a red tie, which complemented his complexion. His smile was even more captivating, reminiscent of the time he stood on the podium in high school.

Yu Wen stayed through the entire wedding, eventually leaving with the other guests.

Once everyone had left, Chen Luosong was immediately taken back to his room, collapsing onto the soft sheets.

His suit fell to the floor, his shirt was disheveled, and his tie hung loosely in front of him. He could feel someone starting to bite him habitually again.

The bitten spots were slightly painful. Reflexively, he searched for a distraction, wrapping his arms around the back of the person on top of him.

In that instant, the person above him froze, their heartbeat suddenly intensifying, and their muscles tensing.

Zhou Kaiji was unusually nervous.

Chen Luosong looked up and asked, “Were you still scared from that time?”

He was referring to the mission failure, and the answer was obviously yes.

The person on top of him grabbed both his wrists with one hand, pulled off his tie with the other, and loosely wrapped it around Chen Luosong’s wrists before asking, “Is this okay?”

Chen Luosong, his half-closed eyes shutting completely, replied that it was.

In the darkness, he could feel the tie tightening around his wrists until it was impossible to break free.

Then came a continuous wave of pain.

As his consciousness began to blur, he heard a voice by his ear. Zhou Kaiji called his name and then said, “Never leave me again.”

Chen Luosong, his voice hoarse, responded in his usual tone, “Call me Brother Chen, you blockhead.”

A laugh echoed in the dim light.

In the slivers of light, the diamond wedding rings sparkled vividly.
