Chapter 50: Brother, you’re losing your villain aura

Many of the mutants here were rescued by Lu Qiufeng back then. Except for a few mutants who repaid kindness with enmity and killed Lu Qiufeng’s mother, who were personally killed by Lu Qiufeng, the rest were basically still here.

Later, some mutants who couldn’t survive outside found their way here, gradually forming a settlement.

The mutants had varying abilities, but they were not afraid of the pollution outside, so they lived isolated lives here.

The mutants here hated humans and did not want to interact with them. Even among themselves, they were not inclined to live in groups, and each had somewhat eccentric personalities.

They usually lived dispersed in the vicinity and only gathered when necessary.

If it had not been for their connection to Lu Qiufeng, Yu Yan and the others would not have been able to enter here.

After the introduction, Yu Yan spoke with a serene demeanor amid various curious gazes:

“Apologies for the disturbance. We have offended a major family in the residential area and are being pursued. We hope to take refuge in a nearby place. Please rest assured, even if the enemies find this place, it won’t affect you.”

He stood among so many mutants as a human, speaking calmly and leisurely, with a composed demeanor that looked particularly handsome.

Unfortunately, from the moment they stepped in, the little bird bat, due to his excessive wariness of the unfamiliar mutants around them and his anxiety over his partner, clung tightly to him.

This protective posture greatly diminished Yu Yan’s imposing aura, even reducing the cool, killer demeanor of the little bird bat.

Eventually, a mutant spoke up, saying, “Since you are connected to him, you can stay here temporarily.”

Yu Yan found this amusing. Although Lu Qiufeng had rescued these mutants, due to some reasons, he had always held a grudge and was unwilling to give a good face to even Xiao Wei and Xiao Hong.

On their side were two unfortunate colleagues who hadn’t done anything right.

If Lu Qiufeng, who was supposed to be the link between them, had been here, he probably would have rolled his eyes at both sides and said, “Stay away.”

After gaining the approval of most of the mutants, Yu Yan and the others got back into the vehicle and drove deeper.

Xiao Wei and Xiao Hong continued to sit on the car hood, directing the way. The pollution was severe here, causing all navigation systems to fail. Only the mutants living here could recognize the path.

Looking back at the situation inside the car, Xiao Wei asked Yu Yan, “Why does he keep holding onto you? He was holding onto you inside earlier, and now he’s still holding onto you in the car.”

012 had started to feel drowsy as soon as they got in the car, but still did not forget to tightly cling to his partner.

Yu Yan, unfazed, steered with one hand and used the other to adjust an obstacle that had shifted on his body. He replied, “Oh, he’s afraid I might be scared. He’s trying to comfort me.”

Xiao Hong remarked, “You guys are so strange!”

Xiao Wei asked curiously, “He’s a mutant like us. Are you two a couple? How can a human be with a mutant?”

Yu Yan smiled and said, “Yes, he’s a mutant, and we’re a couple.”

The two kids were intrigued by this cross-species romance and continued to ask, “Do you really like him? He looks different from you.”

“Hmm, do I like him?” Yu Yan pondered for a moment before saying, “Mostly, I just can’t bear to part with him.”

He had actually considered leaving a few times, but seeing this guy’s affection level peak and watching him think he finally had a partner, trying his best to protect their nest, made it a bit hard to leave.

It was also interesting to see him trying to keep his distance but still coming over and nudging affectionately.

He asked himself if working at the research institute was something he absolutely had to do. It wasn’t, actually. Opening a small clinic in the underground city and returning to his old profession seemed nice. After being a doctor for so long, he still felt that practicing medicine was the most natural thing for him.

Without his eldest brother here to supervise, he had just drifted through life until now.

“But you’re different. He has wings, and you don’t. Don’t you find it strange to be with him?” the two kids asked again.

Yu Yan laughed, “He finds me more strange than I find him. Recently, his mind hasn’t been clear. He’s been trying to find my wings, but he hasn’t succeeded. It has upset him so much that he doesn’t like to fly lately.”

At the mention of wings, 012, who had been drowsy, suddenly opened his eyes a crack, touched Yu Yan’s back, and affectionately nuzzled his neck.

Yu Yan tilted his head, “Move over a bit. I can’t drive like this.”

He talked about these topics with the two kids without concern. After they had asked enough, they turned their attention to the silent Su He in the back seat.

Blinking their innocent big eyes, they asked her, “And what about you? Are you and the big wolf next to you a couple?”

Su He: “…………”

Clearing her throat, Su He asked seriously, “Senior, where are we going?”

The two kids complained, “You haven’t answered us yet!”

Yu Yan chuckled and said, “The place we’re standing on used to be City A before the Great Catastrophe. After the catastrophe, humans moved into the residential area, and many heavily polluted cities outside were destroyed, but City A was preserved.”

“It’s not that we don’t want to destroy this polluted area; it’s just that the destruction device wasn’t activated, so it’s still here.”

When Yu Yan first arrived in this world, he was quite interested and had read a lot of materials, including the history of the Great Catastrophe, polluted mutated creatures, and so on.

The destruction device had appeared in the original storyline as well; it was reactivated to eliminate the escaped infected villain, 012.

However, that destruction device was in City K. City A also had such a device, which Yu Yan had seen in some old documents.

Coincidentally, recently, because of the aftermath at Rainbow Cage Manor, he had talked with Xiao Wei and asked about it before coming here, receiving a positive confirmation.

Xiao Wei had mentioned that he had seen the strange device Yu Yan described while playing adventure games in an abandoned building here.

Yu Yan’s explanation was simple, but for Su He, it was alarming.

Using an old destruction device?! No wonder he wasn’t afraid of how many people from the Zhou family came; if something went wrong with that device, even a hundred or a thousand people would be nothing—this entire area might be destroyed!

Su He hadn’t really believed that her senior could solve the problem; she had only thought that it might delay the issue for a while.

But now that her senior had proposed this method, Su He felt her throat go dry.

“Do we really have to use that terrifying weapon to kill everyone coming after me?” Su He asked with difficulty.

Yu Yan did not turn around and replied with a tone of regret, “It’s unfortunate, but it’s necessary. I only hope they choose to spare you and don’t come here. Otherwise, we’d have no choice but to use it.”

Su He remained silent for a long time before asking, “Can I talk to them first if it comes to that? If there’s a chance to resolve this without going to such extremes, perhaps it can be avoided.”

Yu Yan responded generously, “Of course. You can negotiate with them first if needed.”

After all, the goal this time was to allow 012 and Xiao Ye to complete their autonomous evolution in a dangerous situation. If everything went according to his plan, he could bury all the intruders directly, leaving no room for creating any perilous situations.

Su He did not know what he was thinking but was deeply moved by his words. She thought that her senior was already implicated by her and was still willing to accommodate her whims. If there was any danger, she would have to bear it herself.

The car traveled for a long time, moving away from the mutants’ living area, and reached another side of City A. Here, there were also high and low “tree mountains,” which were high-rise buildings covered with trees and wild grass.

“We’ve arrived. The things are inside here.”

Xiao Wei and Xiao Hong jumped out of the car and pointed at the partially collapsed abandoned building ahead. The top was overgrown with wild grass and trees, obscuring the original outline, but there were several dark entrances at the bottom.

The car could not get close to the entrances due to a large area filled with rubble.

Xiao Wei bounced on the high rubble and said, “That’s now the territory of a large group of bats. They feed on the brain matter of mutated animals, and it’s very dangerous. We don’t go there to play anymore.”

012, who had been startled awake by Yu Yan’s movement, followed him out of the car and was patted on the back of his head by Yu Yan.

“Big bats?” Yu Yan joked, “Perfect timing. Yao’er, could you ask them if they can find another place to live?”

012’s expression remained as indifferent as ever, and no one could tell that he was currently in an unclear state. He stared at his smiling partner for a moment, then slowly understood his meaning.

He nodded in response.

Yu Yan asked, “Hmm? You really have a way?”

He became interested and had Su He take the two kids and hide in the car while he and 012 went to give it a try.

Inside the building was pitch dark, damp, and cool. Yu Yan turned on a flashlight and shone it on the walls, using the scattered light to see the dense mass of dark shadows on the ceiling.

The bats became a bit agitated by the sudden light source, but since it wasn’t a direct light, the disturbance didn’t escalate.

As Yu Yan was observing, everything suddenly went dark. 012 wrapped him up completely, covering him entirely.

Yu Yan heard a hissing sound from above, which resembled bat calls and electrical noises but was more piercing. After a while, Yu Yan even felt a sharp pain in his head.

The sound turned out to be emitted by 012, and Yu Yan had never known he had such an attack capability.

As soon as the sound emerged, the bat colony that hadn’t been disturbed by the light erupted into chaos. They made a cacophony of screeching noises, flapping around wildly and careening in all directions. Most of them swarmed out of the building, while a few fell to the ground.

One of the fallen bats landed at Yu Yan’s feet. He looked down to see a fuzzy, black-gray mass crawling groggily on the ground.

The building was far from just having this one colony of bats; it had become a massive bat nest.

Yu Yan and 012 had been inside for a while. Su He and the others, who stayed in the car, saw swarms of bats emerging from various openings, circling outside. The numbers grew, turning into a dark mass and creating a spectacular scene.

“Wow! They’ve driven them all out!” Xiao Wei exclaimed.

Yu Yan, now on the lowest floor, rubbed his throbbing head and turned on the flashlight to check the destruction device he had found.

After hundreds of years, even if the device still worked, its lethality was far inferior to what it had been originally.

The destruction device, occupying a small room, was covered in rust, and the switch was long unusable.

However, there was no need to use the switch. As long as there was a detonator nearby when the time came, the device would explode on its own.

Su He and the others waited for a long time before Yu Yan and 012 finally emerged.

“Let’s go. It’s getting late. We should find a place to rest first,” Yu Yan said as he got into the car.

Su He looked at 012 with concern and asked, “Is 012 okay?”

Yu Yan lifted 012’s drooping head and kissed him on the face, saying, “Yao’er, you can hold on, right?”

012 immediately opened his eyes wide and raised his head.

“Good, let’s find a place to rest and let you sleep.”

Xiao Wei and Xiao Hong took on the responsibility with enthusiasm, saying, “Leave it to us! We have plenty of bases around here where you can rest!”

The “base” the two kids led them to was a small room. It was relatively clean and furnished with cozy little nests for resting, as well as some interesting little trinkets they had collected, giving it a playful touch.

There were no dangerous mutated animals around, and the building hadn’t collapsed too much. The surrounding area, previously covered with thick marble, had fortunately not been overtaken by wild grasses or trees, offering a clear view.

In the room, 012 and the silver wolf occupied opposite sides, while Yu Yan, Su He, and the two kids were in the middle. They set up an outdoor portable stove from the car and cooked hot food and boiled water.

While they ate and discussed their preparations for what was to come, the two kids persistently questioned Su He about emotional matters they hadn’t managed to get answers to in the car. Su He, unable to avoid the questions, used gossip about Lu Qiufeng to distract them.

Once the kids had fallen asleep, Su He sighed, “If it weren’t for the severe pollution outside making long-term habitation impossible, living here wouldn’t be too bad.”

As soon as she finished speaking, two small red lights flickered in the darkness outside, accompanied by the heavy breathing of a large animal.

Su He: “…”

She reached out and tugged on the large ears of the silver wolf beside her. The silver wolf, curled up next to her, suddenly opened its eyes, bared its teeth toward the door, and emitted a threatening growl.

Soon, the rustling in the grass ceased, and the unknown mutated beast left.

With nothing else happening, Yu Yan lay back and unexpectedly found himself against a cool chest.

012, who had been sleeping curled up in a small nest, had silently appeared behind him.

Accustomed to being startled by his sudden appearances, Yu Yan simply settled into his comfortable position and closed his eyes to sleep.
