Chapter 106: Gift for the Fourth (Extra)

The morning at the Yu family’s house always began with a delicious breakfast.

Yu Shi, the fourth brother, was the second person in the house to wake up every day.

After running with his eldest brother for a while, the two would part ways at the street near the market. The eldest brother would continue his workout, while Yu Shi would buy the freshest vegetables to bring home.

The third person to wake up was usually the second brother, Yu Mo.

He lived a disciplined life with habits that had remained unchanged for many years. Whether or not he had work that day, he would wake up at the same time.

He would also come downstairs at the same time.

Yu Shi, who had memorized his second brother’s routine, would have his breakfast ready on the table as soon as he came downstairs, greeting him with a smile, “Good morning, Second Brother.”

“Good morning,” Yu Mo replied as he came down the stairs, wearing a trench coat.

He placed the bag he was holding on the dining table and pushed it toward his fourth brother. “This year’s birthday present.”

When Yu Shi was brought home by their eldest brother, he fell seriously ill and forgot everything from before, including his own birthday. So, he decided to consider the day he arrived home as his birthday.

Every year, he would receive birthday gifts from several of his brothers, and almost every year, his second brother was the first to give him a gift.

While Yu Mo was sitting there eating breakfast, Yu Shi was next to him, unwrapping his present.

He opened a box to find a very soft scarf and a pair of gloves. Just by looking at the logo, he knew they were expensive.

“Thank you, Second Brother!”

“Hmm, the weather’s getting cold. Wear them when you go out in the morning. You’re not as strong as our eldest brother, so don’t try to be like him.”

His second brother was usually a man of few words and rarely gave such considerate advice, so Yu Shi smiled happily and nodded, saying he understood.

As the two were talking, their eldest brother, Yu Guang, walked in from outside.

The well-built eldest brother was only wearing a vest, radiating warmth like the sun. Even in the deep autumn and early winter, it was as if he was still in the middle of summer.

“Eldest Brother, you’re back a little late today.”

“There was a car accident while I was out running, so I stayed to help move the car!”

After changing his clothes, Yu Guang sat at the dining table and started eating noodles from a bowl as big as a basin.

From upstairs came the sound of a door closing, and down came someone staggering, yawning non-stop, barely able to keep his eyes open.

It was none other than Yu Le, the fifth brother, who usually wouldn’t get up unless someone called him.

He was tall and lean, and because he was so sleepy, he almost stumbled on the stairs but quickly grabbed the railing to steady himself.

This made him a bit more awake, and he let go, jumping down several steps with cat-like agility.

“Why is Fifth Brother up so early today?” Yu Shi asked in surprise.

Yu Le grinned and moved closer to him, “Isn’t today Fourth Brother’s birthday? I’ve been thinking for a long time about what gift to give this year, and I couldn’t come up with anything. So, I thought, why not make a bowl of longevity noodles for Fourth Brother this morning as a gift?”

Yu Shi: “…Are you cooking the noodles?”

Yu Le: “Of course, I’ve practiced.”

As he spoke, he had already walked into the kitchen. Yu Shi quickly followed him. “Do you know how to start the stove? Make sure to turn on the range hood, use the cleaned pot… the noodles are in the fridge!”

From the kitchen, the sound of the two brothers talking could be heard gradually.

Eldest Brother Yu Guang suddenly looked up at the stairs and asked curiously, “Where’s Third Brother? Why isn’t he up yet?”

Across from him, Second Brother Yu Mo, who was slowly eating a steamed bun, said, “Third Brother didn’t come home last night.”

Yu Guang suddenly realized, “Oh! Was he on duty at the hospital?”

Yu Mo: “Probably.”

Just then, the front door opened, and Third Brother Yu Yan walked in carrying a cardboard box.

He looked somewhat weary, not much better than their night-owl Fifth Brother, who often stayed up late. But the brothers were used to seeing him in this tired state.

“Third Brother, did you stay at the hospital on duty last night?” Eldest Brother asked.

“No, I stayed at a friend’s place last night,” Yu Yan replied as he rubbed his neck and pressed his lower back, looking like he hadn’t rested well, as if he had overexerted himself.

Yu Guang was pleased. “Is this friend someone you’re really close with? That’s great! You should make more friends!”

Second Brother Yu Mo glanced at him a few times, his eyes lingering on Yu Yan’s neck for a moment before he understood and looked away, taking a sip of his soy milk.

“Fourth Brother! Come here, sign for your gift!” Yu Yan called Yu Shi out from the kitchen.

“This is a newly launched massage device. The company that makes it also collaborates with our hospital. This new product is pretty good; it can massage your shoulders, neck, and back, and the strength is just right. You can use it to relax after a hard day’s work.”

“Thanks, Third Brother. Have you eaten breakfast yet?”

“Yeah…”

“Then have a cup of soy milk.”

“Alright.”

Suddenly, the smell of something burning wafted from the kitchen. Yu Shi’s expression changed, and he quickly rushed back to the kitchen to rescue his younger brother.

“Is this the longevity noodles you made for Fourth Brother with your own hands?” Yu Yan teased, patting his younger brother on the shoulder. “The way it looks, making Fourth Brother eat it would be too cruel. You should eat it yourself.”

Yu Shi said, “It’s okay, Fifth Brother tried his best.”

Yu Le propped his chin up with one hand, leaning on the table, and sighed, “Ah, I failed again. Fourth Brother, how about I sleep with you tonight? I’ll tell you a secret as your gift.”

“Sure,” Yu Shi replied with a smile.

Finally, everyone looked at their eldest brother. Wiping his mouth, Yu Guang said to Yu Shi, “The gift I prepared for you isn’t ready yet. I’ll give it to you tonight.”

Among all the brothers, Eldest Brother Yu Guang was the most unique when it came to gift-giving. He always managed to find some extraordinary items to give to his younger brothers as presents.

Once, he gave Yu Shi a fossil of some ancient marine creature. Yu Shi’s first reaction was, “Is this even something you can give as a gift?”

But Eldest Brother had laughed and said, “Of course it is! It’s been approved!”

After bidding farewell to his brothers, Yu Guang drove straight to his workplace.

He was the head of the Supervision Department at the Non-Natural Ecological Protection Bureau.

To most people, the Non-Natural Ecological Protection Bureau was an obscure government agency, and many had no idea what it even did.

In a small white building near the military district, there was a simple sign at the entrance, and it was rare to see anyone coming or going throughout the day.

You could just push open the door and walk right in—there was no card reader at the entrance, nor was anyone guarding it.

If an ordinary person walked in, they would only see sparsely furnished rooms with whitewashed walls, red-painted desks and cabinets, old computers, and documents lying around. Most of the rooms would appear to have no one working in them.

But as Yu Guang stepped through the door, wearing his Non-Natural Ecological Protection Bureau ID badge, the scene before him transformed into another world.

The space inside the small building suddenly expanded several times over.

Although there weren’t many people, those present were busy at work. Upon seeing Yu Guang, they greeted him: “Captain Yu!”

“Good morning, Captain Yu!”

Yu Guang was not only the head of the Supervision Department but also the leader of the First Supervision Team.

Instead of going to his office, he went directly next door.

“Have Gu Mu and Qiao Yan returned yet?”

A woman sitting at a computer and munching on a tea egg turned around and replied, “Not yet. They said they got stuck in traffic on National Route 412 and were stranded there for a day and a night.”

Yu Guang pulled out a peculiar-looking phone and dialed out. “Hello, Qiao Yan, where are you? Will you be back today? Did you bring the items I asked for? Good, make sure to arrive tonight. I need to give them away today!”

Just as he hung up the phone, a tall, dark-skinned man with short hair approached, looking serious. “Captain Yu, there’s something going on.”

The man was Yang Xiong, the leader of the Third Supervision Team, responsible for monitoring and assessing abnormal phenomena.

If an abnormal situation reached a certain level of danger, it would be reported to Yu Guang for further discussion and action.

In a small conference room, the current members of the two teams in the bureau were present. Yang Xiong opened a file and said:

“This time, it’s an anomaly revival related to the Feng family from Nanxin City, who started with the automotive and energy industries.”

“About ten years ago, their business faced turmoil, and it seemed they performed some kind of mysterious ritual to change their fortunes. Anyway, now the person they chose to host this has experienced a mysterious revival…”

In this world, there are special individuals whose physical or spiritual presence tends to attract entities beyond human understanding.

When these entities are attracted and merge with the person, the person’s magnetic field undergoes significant changes and enhancement.

In simple terms, they gain some special abilities.

Such individuals were the primary focus of the Non-Natural Ecological Protection Bureau because they were highly unpredictable.

Yu Guang looked at the file and said, “Feng Xuexiang, the youngest son of the current chairman of the Feng family, fell into a vegetative state over a decade ago and has just recently awakened. He is now in a private rehabilitation clinic?”

“According to the monitoring data, if Feng Xuexiang awakens, his impact on those around him will be significant. We need to monitor him in advance,” Yang Xiong explained.

“According to previous procedures, we should select someone from our team to approach and monitor him. However, Feng Xuexiang’s situation is somewhat special. He has not fully awakened yet, and if any abnormal energy comes close, it might stimulate him. Therefore, all members of our team are ruled out.”

“But ordinary people without special abilities would be too dangerous to approach him. They might not only be unable to protect themselves but could also be affected by him.”

Yang Xiong also found this situation tricky.

Yu Guang thought for a moment and suddenly said, “I have a good candidate.”

“Who is it?”

“My fourth younger brother, Yu Shi!”

Yang Xiong frowned, “One of the dangerous individuals you monitor?”

Yu Guang slapped Yang Xiong’s shoulder hard. Although Yu Guang did not have Yang Xiong’s imposing physique, his powerful slap made Yang Xiong wince in pain, and the chair he was sitting on even made cracking noises.

“Dangerous individual? My fourth brother is caring and attentive, very obedient and well-behaved! He is not a dangerous person at all!” Yu Guang said proudly with a smile.

Yang Xiong: “…………”

No one could refute Yu Guang’s decision, so the matter was settled.

Yang Xiong didn’t voice his objections in front of the team members but privately sought out Yu Guang to discuss his concerns further.

“Captain Yu, I know you have feelings for your ‘brothers,’ but are you sure your emotions aren’t clouding your judgment? Yu Shi, I remember he was classified as ‘The Controller,’ a significant threat in the Prophet’s prophecy. Although he doesn’t have special abilities, the danger he poses is no less than that of those anomalous entities.”

“Because of the Prophet’s prophecy, everything has already changed, hasn’t it?” Yu Guang said solemnly to Yang Xiong. “I am the future righteous leader predicted by the prophecy. That’s why I was able to join the Bureau at such a young age and become the guardian of Fourth Brother and the others.”

“They might have become terrifying threats in some parallel universe, but here, they are my trusted family.”

Seeing his determined and confident demeanor, Yang Xiong conceded, “Alright, since you say so, I have no reason to doubt it. But are you sure he can handle it? Aren’t you afraid he might be in danger?”

“Hahaha, you don’t know, my fourth brother is amazing! His strength is in his heart!” Yu Guang beamed with a radiant smile. “And if there’s real danger, as his elder brother, I’ll handle it for him!”

That day, Yu Guang came back a little late, holding a potted plant in his arms.

“Fourth Brother, here, this is the gift I’ve prepared for you. It’s a magical flower that grows in a remote forest, blooming only once every ten years. I had a colleague who was on an inspection mission bring it back!”

Yu Shi took the pot, examined the semi-transparent plant carefully, and after thanking his elder brother, he expressed some concern.

“Eldest Brother, is it alright to just pick this flower? I’ve never seen this kind of plant before. Many wild plants are now protected by law and can’t be picked casually. Is it really okay?”

The fourth brother worried about his carefree eldest brother, afraid he might accidentally violate some regulations and face criticism.

Yu Guang looked at his younger brother with great satisfaction. Look at how well he’s been raised, and how aware he is of legal matters!

During their after-dinner chat, Yu Guang inquired about Yu Shi’s work.

“Since you’re not busy at the moment, I’d like to ask for your help.”

“Just tell me what you need.”

“It’s about taking care of someone and keeping an eye on his situation for me.”

“Sure, that’s something I’m good at.”

Yu Guang briefly explained the details about the person in question. After hearing it, Yu Shi’s eyes were insightful and gentle as he asked his eldest brother, “He’s in Nanxin City. If I go, I’ll need to leave this city. Is that okay?”

Yu Guang ruffled his fourth brother’s hair and flashed a broad smile. “You’re all grown up now, and I can trust you. So, go ahead.”

“Besides, didn’t you once say you wanted to see the sea? Nanxin City is quite close to the coast. Go and see it!”

A few days later, Yu Shi arrived at a private rehabilitation clinic in Nanxin City with an exceptionally good environment.

“Hello, I’m Yu Shi, the new caregiver responsible for taking care of Mr. Feng Xuexiang during this period.”

Yu Shi walked into the room and saw the person sitting on the care bed.

He was beautifully flawless, with a gaze that held a clear and innocent curiosity.

As Yu Shi looked at him, it was as if a purple butterfly fluttered across his vision like an illusion.
