Chapter 432 – The Twins

Regarding Shen Huai’s death, Lin Wangshu was only momentarily stunned and felt neither sorrow nor nostalgia.

She had just learned from the person in front of her that, over the past three years, Shen Huai had repeatedly tried to come to the mainland. Initially, he planned to bring others with him, but later he intended to come alone.

But he had been stopped each time.

Lin Wangshu could guess the reason for Shen Huai’s attempts to come to the mainland—besides wanting her life, there was no other reason.

Shen Huai had tried to kill her numerous times; she wasn’t a saint who would feel pity for someone trying to kill her.

She wasn’t crazy.

Even though she had once had feelings for Shen Huai, those feelings vanished when she learned he intended to sacrifice her and her child.

“So, am I completely free now?”

“There are still three years. We will continue to observe you for three more years. As long as you pass this observation period, we will leave.”

They still considered Lin Wangshu to have certain special characteristics and potential dangers, so they needed to be cautious.

“Okay, I understand.” Lin Wangshu didn’t expect them to withdraw immediately. She had accepted the situation as it was.

However, the presence of these individuals over the past three years had had little impact on Lin Wangshu, and it likely wouldn’t in the future either.

So…

She, Lin Wangshu, was essentially completely free now.

It felt wonderful.

From now on, she would stay with her parents, take care of her son, run her business, and live a good life…

Lin Wangshu’s story was for later.

For now, it was still summer vacation for Xu Jinning.

Unknowingly, Xu Jinning’s summer vacation had already passed more than halfway.

Returning to her hometown involved an important task: visiting relatives.

The first place Xu Jinning went with her mother was her grandmother’s house in the neighboring village.

After her aunt returned, the elderly woman’s spirits and health had improved significantly. Now, she appeared quite lively.

Every morning, she would be taken around the village by her aunt and Aunt Haitang, chatting with the elderly and enjoying a leisurely life.

Her appetite had increased as well. Sometimes, she played with her grandchildren and was always cheerful, looking like a happy little old lady.

Whenever Xu Jinning returned, the old lady treated her very well, inviting them to stay for lunch. If it weren’t for Zhang Ailian needing to return in the afternoon, the old lady would have invited them for dinner and to stay the night.

Another relative Xu Jinning visited during the summer vacation was her godfather and godmother, Zhang Changzheng and Chen Xuemei.

However, a year ago, they had moved out of the county seat.

The reason was that Zhang Changzheng had been promoted. He had been promoted to a position in the provincial capital, and the whole family had moved to a residential compound assigned to them in the provincial capital.

Xu Jinning arrived by car, which took over four hours.

Both Zhang Changzheng and Chen Xuemei welcomed Xu Jinning warmly, and even their twins were very fond of her.

As soon as Xu Jinning arrived, the twins surrounded her, continuously calling out “Sister Ningning”.

It was hard to say why, but given Zhang Changzheng’s current status, many people who wanted to associate with his family tried to win over the twins first, as gaining their favor was seen as a way to get closer to the family.

However, the twins were very smart and didn’t particularly like these people.

The twins, being smart, were adept at pretending to be polite, but despite their young age, they saw through everything clearly.

Their favorite person was undoubtedly Xu Jinning.

Although their meetings had become less frequent since Xu Jinning went to school in Beijing and Zhang Changzheng’s promotion, they had not forgotten her. In fact, they were so concerned about forgetting Xu Jinning that they insisted on taking a photo with her.

That group photo was displayed on their bedside table, allowing them to see it anytime.

They couldn’t quite explain why they liked Xu Jinning so much, but they could sense her genuine affection for them, without any ulterior motives.

Being with Xu Jinning made them feel happy, close, and comfortable.

So, they really wanted to stay close to Xu Jinning.

When Xu Jinning returned home from the provincial capital, she ended up bringing back two little shadows.

They couldn’t bear to see Xu Jinning leave.

Whenever Xu Jinning mentioned she would be leaving, the twins wouldn’t cry or throw a tantrum. Instead, they would look at her with longing and pitiful eyes, making Xu Jinning’s heart soften.

“Ningning, why don’t you take them back to Qinghe Village for a few days? Changzheng and I will come to pick them up later,” Chen Xuemei, their mother, suggested several times. There was no other way; it had to be like this.

So, the two little shadows followed Xu Jinning back to Qinghe Village.

As soon as they arrived, they immediately joined Xiao Ji and the others in play, enjoying themselves immensely.

At night, they slept with Xu Jinning.

Fortunately, although the two children were clingy, they were very well-behaved and listened to Xu Jinning, so she liked them a lot.

It wasn’t until five days later, when Zhang Changzheng and his wife came to pick them up, that the twins left with a lot of tears and sniffles.

It was a long time before the twins’ emotions began to settle as they drove away.

By the time they were halfway through the journey, the twins had cried themselves out and fallen asleep.

“Changzheng, why do you think they like Ningning so much?” Chen Xuemei asked curiously.

It wasn’t that she thought it was bad for them to like Xu Jinning—she liked Xu Jinning a lot herself—but she found it puzzling since they hadn’t spent much time with her.

“It’s because they owe their lives to Ningning,” Zhang Changzheng, who was driving, replied.

Chen Xuemei was stunned by this response.

Then it dawned on her: yes, it was indeed true.

The twins were saved by Xu Jinning. If it weren’t for the reminder from Xu Jinning, Zhang Changzheng would have perished, and she, who was unknowingly pregnant, would have suffered a miscarriage from the heartbreak. The twins wouldn’t have even been born.

Their family had been indirectly saved by Xu Jinning, so it made sense that the twins would be fond of her and enjoy being with her.

In reality, it was indeed the case.

Originally, the twins wouldn’t have been born in this world. But because Zhang Changzheng had unknowingly read Xu Jinning’s mind and received a warning, he avoided his fatal fate, and the twins were born safely.

So even though they were children, they understood something. Perhaps it was because they were children that they sensed their lives had been saved by Xu Jinning.

Hence, they naturally felt close to Xu Jinning.
