Chapter 4: Did You Transmigrate Too?

The wolf pack, their eyes glowing green, gradually closed in.

But the name “Gatling Fireworks” was not given without reason!

After a few preliminary shots, the firepower surged!

“Bang, bang, bang—”

The dense barrage erupted, with red, white, purple, and yellow flashes of fire soaring into the air, intertwining in a dazzling display, turning the night into a bright blue sky.

Along with this, the wolves’ mournful howls filled the air. The countless sparks had stunned their ears and eyes.

A spark landed on one of the evil wolves, and before long, Jiang Lili saw one wolf’s head catch fire!

With its head on fire, the wolf, in a panic, crashed into a tree, its head tilting and knocking it unconscious!

“Puhahaha! Look at that dumb dog!!”

Jiang Lili laughed heartily, pointing at the wolf that had knocked itself out to Xin Che.

The glow of the fireworks reflected on Jiang Lili’s face, her smile radiant and her eyes bright.

Time seemed to slow in the intense heat.

Jiang Lili didn’t notice that someone’s gaze was entirely focused on her reflection in their eyes.

Xin Che awkwardly opened a bottle of orange juice.

He handed it to Jiang Lili, and the magnificent, dreamy fireworks bloomed behind them, fierce and grand.

“Wait here for me.”

Jiang Lili understood—Xin Che was about to take action.

These trained wolves were relentless, undeterred by fear, and were clearly coming after them. If they didn’t kill them, the consequences would be dire.

Jiang Lili’s heart tightened, but she reassured herself—Xin Che was the warrior who had quelled a rebellion at the border when he was just sixteen. He would be fine.

Xin Che, holding a knife, turned and walked into the midst of the grand fireworks display.

This time, whether it was because of the fireworks or not, Xin Che’s figure no longer seemed sorrowful. He stood tall, like a god descending to earth.

Jiang Lili sipped her orange juice, watching the fireworks burst with fervor, her heart pounding.

To distract herself, Jiang Lili began picking up the snacks and fireworks scattered on the ground. Most of the fireworks had already been used, and she selected a few portable snacks, tucking them away on her person.

As time passed, the fireworks burned out, and the surroundings darkened. Soon, everything in front of Jiang Lili turned pitch black.

The silence in the air was unsettling.

“Xin Che?”

Unable to help herself, Jiang Lili called out in worry and lit a star stick for illumination.

A rustling sound reached her ears, and Xin Che, holding a blood-soaked knife, emerged from the darkness.

“I’m here.”

He was dragging the lead wolf’s tail behind him.

Having been away from the camp for so long, there had to be an explanation.

Xin Che lifted his gaze to Jiang Lili, whose face was dusty but whose eyes sparkled brightly, reflecting the light from the star stick, which resembled fallen stars.

His voice softened involuntarily. “Let’s go back.”

Jiang Lili felt relieved and quickly strapped her backpack on, scrambling to her feet. “Mm!”

The two of them walked through the night, silent, but the atmosphere was still amicable.

As they neared the edge of the forest, Jiang Lili spoke up, ready to deliver the explanation she had carefully prepared.

“My sister, Jiang Wanyue, sent a letter saying she would bring me some food and money tonight, but I didn’t expect…”

Jiang Lili selectively omitted the details of her encounter with the trap, making some adjustments to the story. “After falling into the trap and passing out, I had a dream. I dreamt of my mother.”

“She sent me a message, telling me that my fate held a deadly calamity and that I must guard the backpack on my back. It would save my life.”

Jiang Lili felt a pang of guilt. Would someone as smart as Xin Che believe her?

“Can you keep the thing about the backpack a secret for me?”

Her tone was dejected, almost pleading. “My father no longer wants me. Now, the only person I can trust is you.”

Xin Che listened quietly, his gaze fixed on the backpack on her back.

He nodded lightly.

“Really?”

Jiang Lili was surprised by Xin Che’s lack of questions and his cooperative attitude. She extended her pinky. “Let’s make a pinky promise. You’re the god of war of Great Sheng Dynasty, so you can’t lie!”

Xin Che gave her a serious look before extending his pinky.

No matter what had happened before, tonight, in the face of life and death, Jiang Lili had chosen to stand by his side.

At her lowest point, she had saved him, and that was enough.

Jiang Lili hooked her pinky around his, pressing their thumbs together. “Sealed with a stamp!”

Under normal circumstances, the exiled convicts would arrive at the nearby station by sunset.

However, the farther south they traveled, the harsher the environment became. The area was remote, with high mountains and complex political powers. There were occasional accidents on the way, so they couldn’t always reach the station on time.

Tonight was one such case. The official road had been destroyed by a landslide, and the exiled group had to rest on a hill.

The once-quiet hill was now bustling with activity.

From afar, Jiang Lili and Xin Che could already hear the ruckus.

“The exiles from the Zhaoping Marquis’ house, step forward!”

“Exiles Xin Che and Jiang Lili have escaped! As their relatives, you will be held accountable!”

“No way!” Madam Yang, the wife of the Marquis of Zhaoping, wiped her tears. “Che’er would never leave us and run off!”

Marquis of Zhaoping, Xin Chong, supported the weak Madam Yang, saying, “That’s right! The men of our Marquis of Zhaoping Reisdence would rather stand and die than be called fugitives!”

Chen Shi, the wife of the second branch, shouted hoarsely, “It must be that Jiang Lili, that wretched girl, who tried to run away! Che’er went to find her!”

“I’ve always said Jiang Lili is a troublemaker!”

“Enough with the shouting!”

Wang Zifu, the head officer in charge of escorting the exiles, cracked his whip on the ground. “Stop being so stubborn, the facts are right here! They’ve escaped, and that’s what happened!”

“Someone, bring the whip!”

Wang Zifu tossed his whip to the nearest officer.

The officer stretched the whip and advanced, raising his hand to strike at the five-year-old boy, Xin Yan!

To deal with a snake, strike at its most vulnerable part. The little grandson was the treasure of the Marquis of Zhaoping Residence.

Chen Shi quickly shielded her son, Xin Yan. At this moment, she truly hated Jiang Lili, that troublesome girl who always dragged them down.

Although terrified, Xin Yan remembered what his grandfather had told him—men of the Marquis of Zhaoping’ house must stand tall like real men. He held back his tears and stubbornly stood in front of his mother, protecting her.

Seeing the officer about to strike the child, Jiang Lili hurried forward, running to stop him. “Stop!”

“Wait! They’re back! They didn’t escape!”

Xin Cheng, the second son of Marquis of Zhaoping, had sharp eyes and spotted Jiang Lili and Xin Che returning from a distance. He quickly pulled the officer back.

Wang Zifu was stunned when he saw Jiang Lili and Xin Che return in one piece.

But after a moment’s surprise, he quickly composed himself and coldly asked, “What’s going on with you two?”

Jiang Lili quickly explained, “I just woke up in the middle of the night and needed to find a secluded place. I was afraid to go alone, so I asked Xin Che to accompany me. We didn’t expect to run into wolves.”

She pulled Xin Che over. “Luckily, my husband is very skilled!”

Jiang Lili’s action was natural, but when Xin Che heard her call him “husband,” he paused for a moment, his ears slightly reddening.

He tossed the lead wolf’s body in front of the crowd.

Thud—

The wolf’s body hit the ground with a heavy thump. Many of the exiles, startled by the strong and sharp-toothed wolf, shrank back in fear.

The officers now looked at Xin Che with even more apprehension, while the onlookers among the exiles hastily retreated.

Wang Zifu, shocked, looked at the wolf on the ground, his expression darkening with frustration.

“Regardless, you two left the group without permission. You should be punished!”

As Wang Zifu pondered how to discipline Jiang Lili and Xin Che to assert his authority, Madam Yang suddenly staggered and collapsed to the ground!

“Mother!”

“Madam!”

The people from the Marquis of Zhaoping household rushed to Madam Yang’s side, completely ignoring Jiang Lili.

Jiang Lili knew she wasn’t well-liked and quietly stayed to the side to rest.

This body was so frail; the fireworks earlier had already exhausted her to the point of near collapse.

Finally, able to catch her breath, Jiang Lili opened the group chat to thank Xiao Pang, only to be shocked by the 99+ unread messages!

It wasn’t just Xiao Pang who had sent messages in the group!
