Chapter 29: The Grave of Wife Jiang Nianwan

However, after Bald Man and his men finally got out, they realized that Monkey and Chaoyang were nowhere to be seen in the yard. Instead, they ran into four people rushing over.

Bald Man: ???

“What are you guys doing here?” Bald Man was utterly confused.

Weren’t these four supposed to be guarding the base?

The four who had just arrived were also baffled—especially the one who had received the walkie-talkie message.

“Boss, didn’t you say you were short on manpower and trapped, and told us to come support you?”

Bald Man: ?????

“When the hell did I ever say I was short on manpower and needed you to come over?!” Bald Man swore angrily. “Did I say that with my own mouth?”

The man nodded blankly, which made Bald Man even more irritable.

“You deaf or what?!”

Lackey: “…”

It really wasn’t his fault—the walkie-talkie signal was so distorted and broken up, it was already a miracle he could barely make out that it was a distress call!

“Damn brat!”

Bald Man nearly exploded with rage.

“Damn Monkey!”

He figured the reason Monkey wasn’t here must be because that traitor had turned on him—and even driven off with the car.

“Move! Hurry back!”

Something clicked in Bald Man’s mind, and he shouted urgently.

Unfortunately, by the time they got back, aside from the two people who had fainted at the gate and been bitten to death by zombies, there was no one else left.

Oh, and… all the food was gone too.

“Arghhhh! Damn kids!” Bald Man roared. “I hate kids the most!”

But just as he finished cursing, the next second they heard roars coming from inside the factory.

Everyone instantly froze.

Wait… inside… there are—there are zombies!?

Well, of course. With the factory gate wide open, how could there not be zombies?

“Run!”

Since Mibao’s mother’s grave was out in the suburbs and too far away, the van stopped at a shop near dusk to rest, planning to continue the journey the next day.

Inside the little convenience store were two zombies—probably a middle-aged couple—who were taken down instantly by two arrows from Chaolu.

Seeing how skilled Chaolu was, the adults couldn’t help but swallow hard.

Good grief, kids these days were something else!

All the adults had lived in the same upscale neighborhood. Their families were well-off, so their lives had always revolved around eating, drinking, and having fun. Right after the apocalypse began, they’d been captured, so they had absolutely no experience with survival.

No wonder they were all so jittery now.

The shop had two floors. The ground floor was the store, and upstairs there were two rooms, plus a kitchen and a bathroom.

Most likely it had been the living space of the couple who ran the shop.

When the adults rummaged through the rooms upstairs, aside from two quilts on the bed, there were only two spare ones in the cabinet.

So everyone had to squeeze together to sleep—otherwise there wouldn’t be enough bedding to go around.

That night, they gnawed on some bread, and also cooked instant noodles in the kitchen pot. After tasting hot food again, everyone immediately felt refreshed and comforted.

Especially the seven adults, who were moved to the point of tears.

“Uuuugh… it tastes so good.” Wang Defa looked like he was about to cry. “Never thought instant noodles could smell this amazing.”

He had always been used to eating things like abalone and hairy crab; junk food like instant noodles was something he’d never touched before.

But without contrast, there’s no appreciation. After starving for so many days, even plain old instant noodles now felt like happiness itself.

Oh, and they’d even added two sausages and a braised egg.

The other adults gave Wang Defa some speechless looks, but truthfully, they felt the same way inside.

Ahem.

They really had been starving too much.

As for the three women who had been violated… well, how to put it? The youngest was in her forties, the two older ones in their fifties. To them, it was certainly disgusting—

but it wasn’t to the point of wanting to die over it.

They just treated it as if they’d been bitten by a dog.

After eating and drinking their fill, since the power was out everywhere, they could only use the gas stove to heat some water for a simple wash. Then everyone crowded together to sleep.

The three kids and the women slept on the bed, while the men squeezed onto the floor with makeshift bedding.

The only problem was, the four uncles all snored. The three aunties had gotten used to it, but the three children kept tossing and turning, unable to sleep.

Luckily, Mibao had the system’s help—it temporarily blocked out her hearing, and she soon drifted off soundly.

That left only Chaoyang and Chaolu, the brother-sister pair, sitting up in the dark and staring at each other, both wide awake from the noise.

Chaoyang’s face was grim. Chaolu ground her teeth in fury: “I want to stab them.”

Chaoyang silently agreed.

He wanted to as well.

But no—they were normal kids. They couldn’t actually do that.

So the two little ones, still scowling, crawled out of the blankets and went downstairs. After searching around the corners of the shop, they finally managed to find some earplugs, and with those, they barely managed to fall asleep.

Damn adults.

Children always sleep longer than adults. So by the time the three little ones woke up, the adults were already up and had breakfast ready.

“Breakfast” was really just porridge and eggs, since the kitchen had no vegetables—only some rice and eggs left.

There were only five eggs total. Three were boiled and given to the three children. The other two were scrambled and the adults shared them.

After finishing their meal, everyone gathered up more supplies and set out again.

This time, though, the ride wasn’t as cramped—because parked outside the shop was another minivan, probably the delivery vehicle the couple who owned the store had used.

Mibao’s mother’s grave was on a private little hill, which Ji Ruwen had specially bought. He had even planted a patch of roses on the mountain.

“…So, we have to climb a mountain?”

Wang Defa stood at the foot of the hill, feeling completely numb.

Have some pity on him—he was already past fifty, almost sixty!

Mibao blinked her eyes. “Uncle Wang, you’re a bit chubby, you need more exercise.”

Wang Defa: “…”

“She’s not wrong. With that body of yours, you really should get more exercise.” Beside him, Li Xiangyu smacked her husband’s back in annoyance. “You’re going up with them. Protect the kids.”

Wang Defa: “…”

Who’s protecting who here was still up for debate.

Still, the adults weren’t comfortable letting the three children go up alone. So, aside from Wang Defa, Zhu Dafu also went with them.

Wang Defa and Zhu Dafu both felt they weren’t really protecting the kids—they were just being dragged along to climb a mountain and lose weight.

The two men, sporting matching big bellies, looked at each other with a sense of mutual understanding, their eyes glistening with unshed tears.

The hill wasn’t very high, just over a hundred meters.

Even so, by the time the five of them reached the top after more than half an hour, the two adults plopped straight down onto the ground.

Chaolu: “…”

A bit disgusted.

These two adults were really useless.

Although Mibao was also panting hard with exhaustion, she was just a child—it was normal.

The mountaintop was still covered in a layer of unmelted snow. From a distance, beneath a pine tree, stood a gravestone.

After catching her breath, Mibao walked toward it. The others stopped three meters away.

The gravestone was specially made—large and beautiful. Carved onto it in bold characters were the words:

“The Grave of Wife Jiang Nianwan.”
