Chapter 47: Crispy College Student

How could a proper cat be so obedient and even do backflips?

This was definitely not an ordinary cat!

Ye Duo narrowed her eyes: she was sure now—this cat that suddenly appeared had to be Mibao’s magical pet!

Chaoyang: …Could it be that Mibao’s alien brother thought she was too bored, so he gave her an alien cat?

The older one and the younger one fell silent for a few seconds.

“…Then, let’s just keep it,” Chaoyang coughed lightly. “It seems pretty well-behaved.”

Ye Duo also nodded. “Yeah, having a cat for company isn’t bad.”

And so Mibao happily hugged Xiao Hei and spun in a circle.

Xiao Hei: “…”

For some reason, he felt something wasn’t quite right.

The next second, he understood why.

Mibao set Xiao Hei down, crouched, and stared into his eyes as she proposed, “Xiao Hei, we don’t have any food left. Could you go out and hunt for us?”

Xiao Hei: “…”

First of all, he was just a cat now. Wasn’t it a bit much to expect him to go hunting?!

Second, was nobody going to point out how bizarre it was to make a cat hunt?

He couldn’t help glancing at the two kids, only to see them looking at him with equally expectant faces.

Xiao Hei: “…”

Right, he had forgotten—children had no brains and no common sense.

So Xiao Hei meowed expressionlessly, then turned around and got ready to head out.

He had only taken two steps when Mibao grabbed his tail.

“Xiao Hei, be careful!” Mibao patted his head. “Don’t let the monsters eat you.”

Xiao Hei was inwardly full of disdain. Monsters? She meant wild animals, right?

But… judging by the clothes and appearance of these three children, they should already be in modern society. So why on earth were they in a cave?

Could it be that the kids went on a trip and ended up lost in the forest?

Xiao Hei didn’t think too much about it and trotted lightly into the night.

The three children, meanwhile, sat down.

Chaoyang and Ye Duo blocked the cave entrance with branches, but even so, cold wind still seeped in.

“Brother Chaoyang, Sister Ye Duo, where are we right now?”

It felt like this place was really far from school.

“I don’t know either, it seems like a forest.” Ye Duo shook her head. “When I woke up, I was already by the riverside, surrounded by trees.”

Chaoyang, however, still remembered the map. He tried hard to recall the course of the river behind their school, and also calculated how long they had been awake.

“We should be in that wetland forest about five or six kilometers away from the middle school,” Chaoyang reasoned. “It’s huge here, and there are a lot of animals.”

That last sentence made all three of them feel heavy-hearted.

A lot of animals…

If they weren’t mutated, fine. But if they were…

[Holy crap! What the heck is this?!]

Out searching for food, Xiao Hei the cat froze in shock. Blocking his path was a rat even bigger than him—what species of rat was this supposed to be?

And why were its eyes green?

On top of that, it reeked of rot…

Xiao Hei stood there stunned for a moment, then saw several more giant, foul-smelling rats crawl out from the surroundings…

“Meooowr!”

The black cat let out a sharp cry, then began weaving and dodging nimbly to avoid the rats’ attacks!

Aaaahhh! Help!

They’re killing cats out here!

“Hungry…”

A skeleton—or no, now barely resembling the shape of a human—Jiang Nianwan stood blankly in front of a car.

“Don’t… know… how… to drive…”

She yanked open the passenger-side door, only to realize—she didn’t know how to drive.

What should she do?

Jiang Nianwan’s shriveled face was full of confusion.

She couldn’t.

She couldn’t remember how to drive anymore.

Then how was she supposed to go find that scent…

She needed to find… find…

“Ah!”

Suddenly, a scream tore through the stillness of the night. A figure stumbled out from a nearby alley in panic, rolling and crawling as he fled, with several zombies hot on his heels!

It was clearly a young man, just over twenty, looking like a college student.

Of course, at this moment the college student was in utter disarray. He could barely control his balance; his four limbs each seemed to be running on their own, as if none of them were willing to cooperate.

He knew he shouldn’t scream at a time like this, but—he was terrified!

Since he was probably going to die anyway, he might as well scream his lungs out!

And so the entire street was filled with the wailing howls of a college student.

The racket was so loud that Jiang Nianwan, standing in front of the car, couldn’t help but turn her head toward the sound.

A… person?

“Drive… car…”

In Jiang Nianwan’s head, a tiny lightbulb flickered on.

She… couldn’t… drive. But… people… could drive.

She could find someone to drive for her.

With that thought, Jiang Nianwan began heading in the direction of the college student.

Meanwhile, the college student was on the verge of breaking down.

Aaaahhh! So scary!

He had already eaten all his food. If he didn’t come out to forage, he’d starve to death at home, so he took the risk of venturing outside.

But who would have thought…

The moment he stepped out, he kicked over an empty soda can.

Wow, the noise it made…

That can was good enough to enter a soccer tournament—the way it just kept rolling and rolling!

“Roar!”

The growls behind him grew louder and louder—so close that the college student could even smell the zombies’ unique stench of rot!

Tears streamed down his face. Was he really going to die here on the street today?

Wuwuwu…

“Ah!”

Before the college student could finish lamenting his tragic fate, the hood of his hoodie was snagged by a zombie behind him, yanking him off balance and sending him sprawling to the ground!

The zombie immediately lunged on top of him!

The college student rolled over quickly, struggling desperately to push the zombie’s head away.

Don’t bite me!

But… college students are always fragile, especially ones like him who usually stayed indoors and hated exercise.

“My life is over…”

Hot tears slid from the corners of his eyes.

If he had known, he might as well have just starved to death at home.

And this zombie stank way too much!

Yet just as he thought he was about to die in a zombie’s jaws, the creature suddenly froze.

College student: “…Huh?”

Why wasn’t it moving?

Before he could react, the zombie toppled to the side.

And then the other zombies, drawn over by the noise, all froze in unison.

The college student’s eyes widened.

“What’s going on?” he muttered dazedly as he sat up. “Did I awaken some amazing superpower?”

So it was true—was he the chosen one?

He was about to become the male lead of an apocalypse novel, climb to the peak of life, and then—

Bang!

All the surrounding zombies suddenly exploded.

The college student screamed and hugged his head in terror.

When he finally opened his eyes again a few seconds later, the ground was littered with body parts, some of which had even splattered onto him.

He was stunned.

And then…

He heard footsteps behind him.

Turning his head, he saw a shriveled, human-shaped figure with two black holes where the eyes should have been walking toward him.

Jiang Nianwan: “You…”

The college student rolled his eyes back and fainted on the spot.

Jiang Nianwan: “…”

The family of three were each busy with their own matters.
