Chapter 55: Giant Zombie
“If someone who didn’t know the situation saw this zombie’s corpse, they’d probably think it was the work of some p*rvert.”
Ye Duo couldn’t help but complain.
And not just any p*rvert, but one who enjoyed tormenting corpses.
But in reality, it was only the result of a pitiful, frightened little girl’s desperate effort.
Looking at Mibao, who was still stabbing away with all her might, Chaoyang couldn’t help but smile. He walked over to her side and gently held her hand. “That’s enough, Mibao.”
Hearing the familiar voice, Mibao finally opened her eyes. Her big eyes were filled with a mix of fear and excitement.
“Mibao is amazing!” Chaoyang gave her a thumbs-up. “Really impressive.”
Ye Duo came closer too, raising both hands with thumbs up. “Yes, Mibao is awesome!”
The fear in her eyes gradually gave way to joy and happiness. “Really? I didn’t hold you back, did I?”
“Of course not!” Chaoyang wiped his hand on his clothes first, then reached out to ruffle Mibao’s hair. “You’re stronger than all of us.”
Ye Duo, like a sidekick hyping him up, nodded along. “That’s right!”
Mibao broke into a silly, happy smile.
Then she started to turn her head, wanting to glance at the zombie she had been stabbing, but the next second Chaoyang covered her eyes with his hand.
“Brother Chaoyang?”
Chaoyang gave a little cough. “It’s not a pretty sight—better not to look. Let’s go upstairs to the second floor. I already checked the kitchen downstairs; there’s some frozen meat and a few cans.”
The reason they had to deal with the zombies on the first floor was because they still needed to go up to the second.
If they ran into trouble on the second floor and the zombies downstairs blocked the exit, that would be a disaster.
So just to be safe, the hidden threat on the first floor had to be cleared out first.
The situation on the second floor was a little better—only two zombies, which Chaoyang and Ye Duo each took down one.
It had been over a month since the apocalypse began. Although Chaoyang mainly relied on his wits, after spending so much time with Chaolu, of course he’d picked up at least some self-defense skills.
There were even more canned goods upstairs—not just fruit, but also ham and vegetable cans. For Mibao and the others, it was an unexpected windfall.
The three of them stuffed their backpacks until they were bursting, and when those were full, they even pulled out an extra bag to keep packing.
Only when there was truly no more room did they finally get ready to leave the buffet restaurant, laden with big and small bags.
“Meow-ow!”
Just as Ye Duo was about to push the door open, Xiao Hei suddenly leapt in front of them and let out a sharp cry.
That cry froze Ye Duo’s movement in place.
[Don’t go out! There’s something outside.]
Xiao Hei fixed its gaze on Mibao.
[And not just a little—there are a lot. I can smell a heavy stench of rot.]
So, absolutely do not go out!
Mibao’s eyes widened. “Huh?”
Chaoyang and Ye Duo both turned to look at Mibao, realizing that she must have heard what Xiao Hei was saying.
“Xiao Hei, you don’t want us to go out… because it’s dangerous out there, right?”
This time, it was Ye Duo’s turn to try and smooth things over.
“I get it. We won’t go out.”
Saying that, Ye Duo pulled Mibao and Chaoyang back inside.
[It’s not that simple.]
Xiao Hei followed after Mibao as they went deeper inside.
[I sense the aura outside is very violent… the other party might be some kind of berserker… ]
Bang!
Before Xiao Hei could even finish speaking, a deafening crash came from outside, like something had just been smashed open.
The three little ones all flinched in fright, their faces instantly showing a mix of shock and unease.
What… was going on?
Xiao Hei had a very bad premonition—though technically, as a system, he shouldn’t even have such things.
But!
He was a beast-taming system. When it came to creatures and plants, he could at least sense a little.
And whatever was outside… was very dangerous!
Just hiding here might not be enough to escape its notice.
Xiao Hei was panicking. Ahhh—his freedom!
[You guys wait here. I’ll go check it out! ]
With that, he bolted out like a streak of black lightning, so fast that the three little ones didn’t even have time to react.
“It—It went outside?” Ye Duo was stunned.
Mibao was a little stunned too. “Xiao Hei said… ah, I mean, maybe Xiao Hei just went to check things out? Let’s hide first, the thing outside feels really scary!”
The moment Xiao Hei darted out, he only ran a few steps before spotting the source of his unease—
Good heavens, what was that?
It was enormous, about three or four stories tall, a gigantic zombie. But its body was covered in countless broken limbs and severed heads, a single glance was enough to send one’s sanity plummeting!
Xiao Hei: “…”
So hard on the eyes.
It looked like one zombie, but in reality, it was dozens… no, hundreds of zombies fused together.
Xiao Hei was speechless.
Xiao Hei was numb.
Xiao Hei was annoyed.
‘Damn — that giant zombie is still smashing the building!
At this rate it’ll soon smash the shop where the little host is — won’t that turn those three kids into meat patties?’
Xiao Hei was nearly freaking out. The little cat paced anxiously in circles, then… he glanced at the manhole cover beside him.
Hmm…
Eh~
He had a good idea.
Xiao Hei was about to run back, but after two steps he stopped — wait, the manhole cover is so heavy, how are those three kids supposed to lift it?
Never mind, that’s not his problem to solve — let the little boy figure it out!
Xiao Hei trotted back excitedly.
“Meow! Meow meow meow!”
[There’s a giant zombie outside smashing buildings — it’s going to hit here soon. Come with me! Hide in the sewer!]
Xiao Hei shouted urgently.
Mibao panicked too. “Xiao Hei says to follow him — there’s a giant zombie outside and it’s going to crush us! He says to hide in the sewer!”
At this point she didn’t bother hiding the fact that Xiao Hei could talk.
“Sewer?” Chaoyang immediately snapped to attention, looked left and right, then grabbed the metal tongs used for clearing trash from the corner of the kitchen. “Let’s go!”
The three little ones followed the black cat out, turned a corner, and ran to a spot between two shops a little off to the side.
This spot could hide them from the giant zombie’s view.
“How do we open such a heavy manhole cover?” Ye Duo tried to grab it, but it was too heavy.
“I’ll do it.”
Chaoyang slid one end of the metal tongs into the small hole in the manhole cover, then pressed down on the other end.
Using the lever principle made it much easier.
Before Chaoyang could even say anything, Mibao and Ye Duo had already stepped forward on their own. The three of them worked together to pry the manhole cover open. Then Ye Duo seized the chance to give it a hard kick, shifting it enough to expose a third of the opening. Without delay, the three of them scrambled down into the sewer.
Ye Duo was the last to go in. She was the strongest of the three, so it was up to her to push the cover back into place.
It was extremely heavy, but pushing it shut was a lot easier than prying it open.
The ground was already trembling—Ye Duo knew the giant zombie was coming!
Faster… she had to be faster!
Her hands were rubbed raw, but she didn’t care. At the very moment the giant zombie’s foot came stomping down, she finally shoved the manhole cover back into place!
Thud!
The impact of the giant zombie’s step shook the ground so hard that the three little ones clinging to the ladder were jolted straight into the filthy sewer water.
Ye Duo, caught off guard, gulped down a huge mouthful!
“Ugh!”
Her face turned green.
