Chapter 150.2: Going Out
Compared to the many decisions that guild presidents and vice presidents had to consider, the choices ordinary residents needed to make were much simpler.
Kuravi Jidasumi Sanruo stood blankly in the team-formation hall.
To make it easier to communicate with others, he had always introduced himself simply as Kula.
Kula was a lucky unlucky man. He had been living peacefully on his home planet when he was suddenly dragged into Green Billow by subspace. Fortunately, Captain Yuan Moshu had rescued him.
The Inkshadow, the ship he had been traveling on, had been pursued by pirates. Then Blue Sea arrived. Not only did they take down the pirates, they also accepted every member of the Inkshadow’s crew.
Before coming to Moon Silk, Kula had always been an Outer-City resident. Being suddenly dragged away by subspace had scared him half to death.
While he was aboard the Inkshadow, he didn’t dare leave his cabin.
After arriving in Blue Sea, he didn’t even dare leave his own room in the residential quarters.
Fortunately, Kula came from a relatively advanced civilization. His repair skills were enough to make a living as a remote network repair technician, and the points he earned were sufficient to support himself.
Kula didn’t dare go anywhere. He didn’t want to interact with other people, nor did he want to look at the various news updates on his phone. He didn’t even want to use the phone.
Yuan Moshu knew what he was like and had once wanted to come visit him. But even after reaching his door, Kula refused to let him in.
He was simply terrified of interacting with people. The pirates he had encountered when he first arrived on Green Billow had left him with an instinctive fear of other people. Before, he had still been able to force himself to suppress that fear and talk to others a little. But now that he had arrived somewhere where he could support himself without relying on anyone else, Kula had no desire to communicate with anyone at all.
He did, however, transfer money to Yuan Moshu and the other crew members who had taken care of him. Once the payments were made, the young man disappeared back into his own world.
This young man was still trapped in that night when he had suddenly been dragged away by subspace, having completely shut himself off from the outside world.
Until that day, when Blue Sea fought the other safety cities all the way into the Endless Night.
Terminals throughout the entire city began automatically playing silent broadcasts, displaying information and footage of the countless night beasts outside.
Kula couldn’t turn it off. The room in the residential quarters was tiny, so all he could do was watch.
And then, the man who had spent all this time curled up in his little nest finally realized just how terrifying the outside world was.
He came up with the idea of using faith to bring peace to his heart.
Kula began working from the safety of his room in the residential quarters while simultaneously brainwashing himself.
Hard work paid off. It wasn’t actually that difficult, and he succeeded!
He was now a believer of the Great Blue Sea Creator God!
God!
He had to say, this was truly a wonderful experience.
Ever since he had been stranded on another planet, Kula had been in a constant state of panic. He was terribly afraid that, just like before, he might be going about his business one moment only to suddenly be dragged into another strange and dangerous world, facing a future where he could lose his life at any moment.
But after placing his faith in the Great Blue Sea Creator God, he felt a profound warmth. He had regained his sense of security.
He was absolutely certain that the great Creator God would never allow subspace to drag him away again.
Both the body and soul of Kuravi Jidasumi Sanruo now belonged to the great Creator God.
After truly experiencing that warm power bestowed by a deity, Kula became convinced that he had arrived in the kingdom of God.
As a new believer, Kula regained his sense of security and finally summoned the courage to step outside the residential quarters.
Actually, he had a secret.
Not long after arriving in Blue Sea, Kula had accidentally fallen and broken a bone. As a result, a strange ability had awakened within him, instantly healing the fracture.
Afterward, Kula had tested it. If he used a knife to cut his skin, the ability could also heal the wound, leaving behind nothing more than a faint scar.
The Kula of before had always been terrified. He didn’t dare reveal his ability. Even in his native civilization, if people discovered that he possessed such a bizarre power, he couldn’t guarantee that they wouldn’t take him away and cut him open for research.
And this was another world, another civilization altogether.
But now, everything was different.
—I am a believer of Our God.
—They are all people I can trust.
Kula looked at the Blue Sea residents walking back and forth around him. The fear and timidity that had always filled his eyes were gone.
He had always been terrified of crowded places before, but now, Kula felt nothing but safe.
His subconscious told him that if the hall came under attack at this moment and he found himself in danger, anyone around him would come to his rescue.
Because they were all believers of the great Creator God.
Our God!
He remembered what Captain Yuan Moshu had told him: they needed to travel to one apocalyptic world after another.
There were countless dangers outside, and the residents had to fight in order to survive. Since he possessed an ability like this, of course he should also contribute to Blue Sea.
Kula tightly gripped the statue of the Great Blue Sea Creator God in his hand and stepped up to the window.
“H-hello. I’d like to report something.”
The staff member at the window smiled at him. When she noticed how thin and frail he was, and that he didn’t look very old, her smile became even gentler.
“Hello. What would you like to report?”
“I have a special ability. Look.”
Kula picked up a small knife and drew it across his arm. Then he held out his right hand above the wound. A faint white glow flashed, and the fresh cut that had just appeared began to heal before his eyes.
He took a deep breath and looked at the staff member in front of him, excitement and nervousness mixed together in his voice.
“I think this should be able to help Blue Sea. With Our God above, I’ll accept whatever arrangements you make. I’m also willing to leave the city and fight.”
The staff member blinked and began typing on her computer.
“All right. Could you give me your resident ID?”
Her attitude was far too calm, leaving Kula somewhat bewildered.
He had expected her to be surprised first, then shocked, and only afterward report the matter to her superiors.
Although he didn’t quite understand what was going on, Kula obediently handed over the resident ID that he had always worn around his neck.
“Resident Kuravi Jidasumi Sanruo, resident number is… Registered.”
“Resident supernatural ability: Healing-type (currently leaning toward support), level…”
The staff member leaned forward slightly. “Do you know what level your ability is?”
Kula stared blankly. “Huh? Huh? I don’t know. What level?”
The staff member found this strange.
There was actually a Blue Sea resident who had awakened a supernatural ability and managed to resist the urge to have their level tested all this time.
While marveling inwardly at his astonishing self-restraint, she borrowed a supernatural ability detector from the review window next door.
The thing was small, but it was by no means cheap. At present, only official institutions had access to such equipment.
“Just place your hand on it.”
Kula didn’t understand, but obediently did as he was told and placed his hand on the device.
“Beep—the detected supernatural fluctuation is Tier 3—”
The staff member immediately began typing furiously on the keyboard.
“Resident supernatural level: Tier 3. In that case, you have quite a few more options.”
“You’re a Tier 3 ability user, so you’re capable of traveling outside the city on your own. However, since you’re a support-type, we recommend that you form a team with others. Would you like to join a team?”
Kula felt like his brain had been in a daze ever since he came to this window. He struggled to process what the woman was saying before stammering,
“A team… A team. I don’t dare go alone.”
Our God!
He had said it!
It wasn’t that he was afraid of people. He was afraid that people would hurt him. In truth, he had always wanted to be together with everyone.
And now, he could finally do that.
“All right. Please take the white passage. That’s the open team-formation hall. If you don’t find a suitable teammate inside, we’ll randomly match you with teammates. The team will only be formed if everyone agrees.”
Kula opened his mouth. He wanted to ask what an “ability user” was, and what “levels” were.
But although he was a little braver now, his timid nature hadn’t changed.
He hesitated for a moment, then glanced at the long line of people waiting behind him. Deciding not to trouble anyone any further, he hesitantly walked into the white passage.
After walking for about three or four minutes, he arrived at an even larger hall.
There were people everywhere. Everyone was talking, and some were even shouting at the top of their lungs.
There were simply too many people, so many of the Blue Sea ability users would outright display their abilities to attract attention.
In the hall, someone was breathing fire. Someone else had conjured a ball of water in their hands and was casually tossing it around. Another person was holding a light bulb with no power source connected to it, yet it was glowing on its own in her hand.
Kula was dumbfounded.
“Party of seven! Looking for people with a combat rating of 85 or higher!”
“Looking for a water-type ability user! We’ve already got an ice-type in our party! We can work together!”
“We need someone tough! Someone who can take hits!”
“Anyone here good at long-range attacks? Sniper rifle or long-range supernatural abilities, either works! Whole team has a combat rating over 75, guaranteed reliable!”
“Looking for a healer! Support-type! We can head out immediately once someone joins!”
“I’m a healer! I can cure toothaches. You have a toothache?”
“Full ability user team, currently looking for a controller! Anyone with control abilities? Our whole team is easygoing, clean, talkative, and likes casual battles and games. Controller, come check us out!”
Kula: “…”
At that moment, he finally understood why the staff member at the window had reacted so calmly.
He also finally understood the dangers of being disconnected from the network.
So everyone had abilities like this!
If he’d looked at his phone earlier and checked the news, how could he possibly have spent so long hiding at home in constant fear?
Kula swallowed and quietly said,
“I… I’m a healer too.”
The Blue Sea residents around him all had sharp hearing. The instant they heard those words, every single one of them turned to look at him.
With so many people staring at him, Kula strangely didn’t feel all that nervous. He took a deep breath, pulled out a knife, and made a shallow cut across his arm.
Then he activated his healing ability and healed himself.
The Blue Sea residents around him: “Whoa!”
What a badass!
Most other healers would find a resident with an injury or illness and heal them.
This guy had actually gone and made his own wound!
The surrounding teams immediately swarmed around this badass healer.
Healers were already highly sought after, and at a time like this, every team had to show off its strengths in order to win him over.
“Me, me, me! Our team has twenty-three people, with long-range attackers, main damage dealers, and tanks! With you joining us, we’ll be like a tiger that has grown wings!”
“Don’t listen to him! Pick our team. We’ve got a water-type, so you won’t have to worry about going thirsty once we’re outside.”
“What’s so impressive about having a water-type? Pick our team! None of our members have a combat rating below 80. If you come with us, you won’t get hurt.”
Kula, surrounded by the members of all these teams: “…”
Memories of playing games back in his native civilization came rushing back.
This was practically a giant multiplayer game matchmaking lobby.
Hadn’t Captain Yuan told him that they were going to follow a civilization to various apocalyptic worlds and struggle to survive?
Was this what struggling to survive in the apocalypse was supposed to look like?
