Chapter 24: You Reap What You Sow

While Old Wolf trembled in fear, Mibao finally opened her eyes and let go of her ears.

Huh? Nothing seemed to have happened.

She blinked her big round eyes.

“P… pull me up…”

At that moment, a weak and cautious voice came from the side.

Mibao turned her head curiously—and there she saw Old Wolf, with half his body already hanging off the edge of the small platform.

“Uncle Wolf, that’s really dangerous! Hurry and come back up!” Mibao’s eyes widened.

Old Wolf: “…”

‘No shit—it’s dangerous! Of course I know that!’

‘Damn it, as if I don’t want to get back up?!’

Old Wolf felt a pang of regret about teaming up with Mibao. This kid was way too stupid—she couldn’t understand a word he was saying!

If it were the boss or anyone else with him, they would’ve pulled him up right away.

“Pull me… pull…”

He tried speaking again, but the moment he opened his mouth, his body wobbled precariously, as if it might topple at any second.

That scared Old Wolf so much that he didn’t dare say another word.

The platform was three stories high. Falling from there wouldn’t necessarily kill him, but he’d be seriously injured—and in the apocalypse, serious injury was as good as death!

All their people were cold-blooded; no matter how many years they’d known each other, the moment they saw he was useless, he’d end up no different from the pigs they slaughtered—stripped of all dignity.

As countless thoughts flashed through Old Wolf’s mind, Mibao finally realized he couldn’t move.

“Uncle Wolf, what are you doing tying yourself up like that?”

She stood up straight, tilted her head slightly, and looked at him with a puzzled expression.

“Is this some kind of game?”

Old Wolf: “…”

‘Game, my ass!’

‘Is this kid brain-dead or what?!’

Old Wolf cursed furiously in his heart, but right now Mibao was the only one who could help him. So he forcefully swallowed down his anger, squeezed out a smile, and pinched his voice into a high-pitched tone.

“Mi… Mibao, right? Come here, slowly, then grab the rope and pull it back with all your strength.”

He practically had to strain every fiber of his being just to make his voice sound so forced and cloying.

Mibao: “…”

That sounded… kind of awful.

But she figured she’d played dumb long enough.

Yes, she’d been doing it on purpose.

Hmph, don’t be fooled by her young age—she wasn’t stupid!

That bad uncle had clearly wanted to b*lly her earlier. She could tell.

Still, after teasing him a little, she figured that was enough. So she walked over to Old Wolf, preparing to pull him back up.

Mibao didn’t have much strength. Even using all her might, she could only tug him back a little bit at a time.

Slow progress, but at least it was progress.

Old Wolf finally let out a breath of relief.

But before he could even finish exhaling, a chilling roar reached his ears.

Old Wolf froze instantly.

That was… the sound of a zombie!

Mibao heard it too. She yanked her hands back in fright and turned toward the sound. Not far away, a zombie had appeared from who-knew-where.

“M-m-monster!”

Her round eyes widened, and the little dumpling of a girl stood there frozen stiff with fear.

Old Wolf felt his blood run cold too.

If he were in his normal state, facing a zombie like that wouldn’t bother him in the slightest.

But now…

All he could do was hold his breath, desperately trying to make himself as unnoticeable as possible, while secretly praying the zombie would go after the little brat instead of him!

The zombie shuffled toward them, roaring as it twisted its body, its gaping mouth dripping foul, stinking drool.

Frightened out of her wits, Mibao turned and ran.

Seeing this, Old Wolf secretly rejoiced.

Zombies loved chasing things that moved. Once the little brat started running, the zombie would definitely be lured after her!

That way, he’d be safe for the moment. As long as he waited until the boss and the others noticed something was wrong and came looking for him, he’d be—eh?

Before he could finish celebrating in his heart, out of the corner of his eye he noticed the zombie steadily approaching him instead.

Old Wolf: ???

What the hell? Is this zombie broken in the head?!

Why ignore the one that’s running and come after me—the guy who’s not even moving, who’s holding his breath?

Old Wolf was terrified, but he didn’t dare move. He could only watch helplessly as the zombie lunged straight at him!

“Ahhh!”

Already hanging on the edge by a thread, Old Wolf was knocked clean off the platform by the zombie’s pounce!

The loud crash made Mibao stop in her tracks. She turned back in a daze and saw that Old Wolf’s figure had completely vanished from the platform.

The others inside the mall who were collecting supplies all jumped at the noise, looking up blankly toward the outside.

“What was that sound?”

“That scream… why does it sound like Old Wolf?” Bald Man frowned.

Chaoyang, standing next to him, immediately tensed up. “Mibao…”

Did something happen to her too?

Because of the sudden scream, and since they’d just about finished gathering supplies, Bald Man led two underlings and Chaoyang toward the source of the noise.

At the same time, another three-man team also rushed over.

And then…

They saw Mibao standing on the platform, her little face pale as paper.

“Mibao!”

Seeing this, Chaoyang anxiously ran over, pulling her away from the edge of the platform in one quick motion.

“That’s too dangerous—don’t stand somewhere without a railing.” He held onto her, speaking seriously. “Right, are you hurt anywhere?”

Mibao shook her head, her little face still pale as a sheet.

Even though she really didn’t like Uncle Bad Wolf, she had only wanted to annoy him—she never meant to kill him…

[Mibao, this isn’t your fault.]

The system immediately noticed something was wrong with Mibao’s state of mind, so it hurried to give her psychological comfort.

[That bad man deserved what he got. He was the one who tied himself up, and in the end, it was the zombies that dragged him down. It has nothing to do with you.]

Mibao swallowed hard. “Really…?”

Chaoyang: …?

It took Chaoyang a second to realize that Mibao was probably talking to her alien big brother.

Sensing something might have just happened, he walked forward a couple of steps and leaned over the platform to look down—only to see Old Wolf’s lifeless body below, being gnawed on by a zombie.

And because of the smell of blood, several more zombies were shambling over.

The scene was so bloody and revolting that Chaoyang only glanced twice before quickly pulling his gaze back. He then stepped up to Mibao and pulled her into his arms.

“It’s okay. Don’t be scared. Don’t think about it,” he comforted her softly.

The bald man and the others also frowned as they looked down, their expressions changing when they saw Old Wolf’s corpse.

“This…”

One of the lackeys was dumbfounded, his face turning ugly.

“Old Wolf was strong—how could this happen!?”

Everyone’s gaze then fell, in unison, on the pale-faced Mibao. But…

How could such a tiny little thing possibly have caused Old Wolf’s death?

It was unthinkable!

But the ropes on Old Wolf’s body were real…

“Little brat, tell me—what exactly happened!?”

The bald man’s face darkened as he yanked Mibao out of Chaoyang’s arms and barked the question harshly.
