Chapter 113 – Encounter with Su Man

After arriving in the town, Lu Xia didn’t bother to buy groceries, but instead went to the supply and marketing cooperative to purchase a lot of meat, including lean meat, fatty meat, and bones, using up all the meat tickets accumulated during this period.

Anyway, it was cold now, and the meat could last for a long time.

After buying the meat, Lu Xia planned to go back.

However, as she was leaving the town, she noticed quite a few people coming in and out of a small forest outside the town.

Lu Xia was surprised and was about to go in and take a look when she saw a somewhat familiar figure.

It was Su Man!

Even though she was disguised, wearing tattered clothes and makeup on her face, Lu Xia recognized her at a glance.

She admired her own keenness.

She saw Su Man carrying a basket and heading inside, and Lu Xia instantly understood that this small forest should be the location of the town’s black market.

No wonder she couldn’t find it before, it turned out it wasn’t even in the town.

But it was unexpected that Su Man knew about it.

Seeing her appearance, Lu Xia knew she must have come to buy something.

Having figured that out, Lu Xia didn’t go in.

After all, she didn’t need to buy anything now, and as for selling, the food from the space hadn’t come down yet, so there was nothing to sell.

So she just rode her bike and left.

Along the way, she didn’t encounter many people. When she arrived at the village entrance, she found a secluded spot and took out the burlap bags she had prepared in advance and fixed them to the bike.

This time, she took out not only rice from the space but also corn and flour.

Although corn was considered coarse grain, the corn from the space was much tastier than what was available outside, and coarse grains were also nutritious, so she could occasionally cook something with them.

Besides the grains, she also took out a good amount of apples she had saved before.

Northeastern apples were available at this time, but they were small in size and quite expensive.

Because during the winter in the northeast, especially in rural areas, the only available fruits were apples and frozen pears. So even if the family’s financial situation wasn’t good, they would save some apples for the winter to last through the season.

Lu Xia remembered that when she was in college in her past life, there was a roommate from her hometown, a girl from the rural areas of the northeast. She said that her family would prepare two bags of apples every winter, and they would eat them every day. She loved them as a child, but after eating them for so many years, she got tired of them, and now she couldn’t stand to eat even one, just looking at them made her uncomfortable.

But there was no other choice; winters in the northeast were too cold, other fruits were not only expensive but also unavailable. Apples were the best for storage.

Lost in thought, Lu Xia finally filled the backseat of her bicycle with all the items. She was afraid they might not stay in place, so she held onto them and pushed the bike back home.

Jiang Junmo had been waiting impatiently at home. He was standing in the yard and when he saw her returning, he quickly opened the door and helped her push the bicycle inside.

“Why were you waiting outside? Aren’t you cold?” Lu Xia asked.

Jiang Junmo smiled and said, “Not cold, I just came out.”

Lu Xia smelled something fishy but didn’t reveal it.

The two of them brought the things inside, and Jiang Junmo was surprised to see so much food.

“Are those food tickets enough?” he asked.

Lu Xia shook her head and replied, “I didn’t buy from the grain station; the food tickets are still intact.”

Jiang Junmo paused for a moment upon hearing this. He opened each package of food to take a look and asked, “Are these the same kind of food we used to eat?”

Lu Xia nodded and replied, “Yes, all of these are. In the future, we can try different ways of cooking them.”

Jiang Junmo paused for a moment, then suddenly reached out and held Lu Xia’s hand.

Lu Xia was somewhat surprised; this was the first time Jiang Junmo had held her hand. His hand was cold, probably from being outside, but for some reason, it gave Lu Xia an inexplicable feeling.

Chapter 114 – Chen Er Starts a Relationship

.

“Will it be too risky? Actually, we can just eat food from the grain station,” Jiang Junmo expressed his concern.

Understanding his worries, Lu Xia realized he probably thought she bought the food from the black market. She didn’t argue and replied, “Don’t worry, it’s safe. I have a reliable source, and there won’t be any danger.”

Seeing he was still hesitant, Lu Xia reassured him once again, “Really, I promise I won’t put myself in danger!”

Finally, Jiang Junmo breathed a sigh of relief. “Alright, I believe you, but always prioritize your safety in the future!”

“Okay!”

With her promise, Jiang Junmo felt relieved and suddenly became aware that he was still holding her hand. Feeling a bit embarrassed, he quickly let go.

“Um… I’ll take the food inside the back room first,” he said.

Seeing his awkwardness, Lu Xia smiled and said, “Sure, I also bought some apples. They look delicious; you can try them.”

“Great!”

As Jiang Junmo moved the food inside, Lu Xia decided to visit Sun Shengnan to learn how to finish her knitting project. However, as she left, she noticed someone passing by the educated youth spot.

Lu Xia looked closely and immediately recognized the person; it was Chen Er!

Chen Er also noticed her and instinctively wanted to run away, but he stopped himself and awkwardly approached her.

“Hello, Educated Youth Lu, I’m almost fulfilling my promise to you,” he said.

“Oh?” Lu Xia pretended not to understand. “What do you mean? What promise did you make to me?”

“Oh, right, it has nothing to do with you. It’s my own matter,” Chen Er quickly corrected himself. “Hehe… I have found someone to start a relationship with. It’s with Educated Youth Zhuang.”

“What?” Lu Xia was surprised that Zhuang Hongmei could be interested in Chen Er.

“Really? Are you sure it’s not just wishful thinking on your part?” she asked.

“It’s true!” Chen Er straightened his chest. “I thought about it, and the village is now being strict with marriages. If I still rely on the old ways to marry a wife, it won’t work! So I came up with a different approach. As long as I treat her well, she will definitely be moved. And that’s how it happened. Educated Youth Zhuang is willing to be with me. I’ve already talked to my family, and we’ll formally propose to her in a while.”

Lu Xia couldn’t help but twitch her mouth and gave Chen Er another careful look.

What kind of development was this? Could he really say such things?

It seemed like Zhuang Hongmei had lost her mind to agree to be with him.

However, since he said it, it was probably true.

Lu Xia felt speechless and somehow admired Chen Er’s tactics.

She had suggested this idea initially to ruin Zhuang Hongmei’s reputation so that she had no choice but to marry him. She didn’t expect that he would use his own charm to convince her to become his wife. It was beyond imagination!

She looked at Chen Er again; what kind of charm did he have?

Well, maybe she just hadn’t noticed.

“Alright then, I wish you happiness,” Lu Xia said.

Chen Er grinned, “Alright, when we get married, I’ll make sure to tell Educated Youth Lu.”

As they parted ways, Lu Xia arrived at the educated youth spot and found Sun Shengnan in the yard.

“I heard your voice from far away. Who were you talking to?” Sun Shengnan asked.

Lu Xia’s eyes shifted as she smiled and said, “It’s Chen Er from the village. He said he’s starting a relationship with Educated Youth Zhuang. Is it true or not?”

Sun Shengnan wore a face of helplessness and replied, “It’s true, it’s been some time now.”

Lu Xia was also surprised, “Everyone knows?”

Sun Shengnan nodded, “He always comes here to deliver things.”

Lu Xia sighed, “Alright then.”

  1. But, you know how LX has fiercely beat him at “that place”? And the Chen expected they’ll have children with better studying talent by marrying ZHM? And ZHM sounded like hasn’t had nutritional enough intake all these years and she has been stressing herself with unnecessary problems? To me, those conditions sound like a good enough “recipe” for infertility.

  2. Interesting how MC’s presence in the novel changed Chen Er’s fate as well. In the original novel, he was a rapist who ultimately made the original Lu Xia commit suicide. Dunno what happened to him after that, but I doubt it was anything good. Now, he seems… Decent? He’s not forcing Zhuang Hongmei in any way. Perhaps they will even be happy together.
