Chapter 225 – Penetrating Gaze

She then glanced at the pregnant woman and noticed that after hearing the old lady’s words, the woman was staring fixedly at Kang Kang.

Sun Shengnan observed her actions with confusion, and Lu Xia raised her chin in the direction of the woman. Sun Shengnan turned her head and saw that unsettling gaze.

Concerned, she decided to stay close to the child at all times. They didn’t want to get involved in other people’s affairs, as long as it didn’t affect them.

However, it seemed the old lady had fixated on her because she had given birth to a son. Hearing that Lu Xia had given birth to a boy on her first pregnancy, the old lady was even more envious and inquired about any secrets.

Lu Xia couldn’t be bothered and didn’t want to engage, so she let Jiang Junmo handle it. She overheard the old lady calling them stingy after Jiang Junmo tried to dismiss her.

But the gaze from the woman towards Kang Kang became even more unsettling.

Lu Xia felt a knot in her heart, sensing that something wasn’t right.

Perhaps due to good nourishment, Lu Xia’s milk came in on the second night after giving birth. The process of lactation was still painful, though.

Finally, little Kang Kang had his first taste of mother’s milk.

After feeding Kang Kang at night, Lu Xia went to sleep as usual, leaving the child in the care of the other two.

However, in the middle of the night, she suddenly heard Jiang Junmo’s urgent voice.

“What are you doing?”

His voice was loud, startling Lu Xia awake. She instinctively opened her eyes and in the darkness, she saw Jiang Junmo seemingly restraining someone.

By now, Sun Shengnan was also awake and hurried to turn on the light. They both realized that it was the woman from next door.

Since she had a daughter, there was no one staying overnight with her next door. The old lady and the husband had left with the two children, leaving only the woman and her newborn.

On Lu Xia’s side, Jiang Junmo and Sun Shengnan were taking turns sleeping.

Unexpectedly, something happened shortly after Sun Shengnan fell asleep.

With the light on, the woman appeared visibly flustered for a moment, then began shouting, “What are you doing? Harassing me in the middle of the night! And laying your hands on me!”

“I haven’t done anything! I was going to the bathroom! Let go of me, or I’ll call for help!”

As her evasive excuses grew louder, Jiang Junmo knew she was lying.

Chapter 226 – Early Discharge

At this moment, the on-duty doctor and nurses who heard the commotion rushed over.

Seeing the scene in the ward, they were all surprised. “What’s going on?”

The woman glared at them and returned to her bed. She didn’t head to the bathroom as she had claimed earlier.

Lu Xia thought about the woman’s gaze in the afternoon and didn’t believe she was just going to the bathroom. She was certainly up to something.

As for what that something was, only she knew…

Because of the earlier commotion, Kang Kang had been awakened. Jiang Junmo was soothing him, while the woman’s daughter was still sleeping soundly.

After finally getting Kang Kang back to sleep, none of them could fall asleep. Lu Xia looked at Kang Kang sleeping peacefully beside her.

She whispered, “How about we go back tomorrow?”

Jiang Junmo initially wanted her to stay at the hospital for three days to ensure everything was fine before leaving. However, after tonight’s incident, he nodded in agreement, “I’ll go ask the doctor tomorrow. If everything’s okay, we’ll go back.”

“Sounds good.”

Lu Xia couldn’t sleep for the rest of the night. She only managed to fall asleep when dawn was approaching. Jiang Junmo and Sun Shengnan hadn’t slept at all.

Once morning came, Jiang Junmo went to ask the doctor and was told they could be discharged.

In this era, most pregnant women stayed in the hospital for just a day after giving birth to see if everything was alright before being allowed to leave. Lu Xia’s three-day stay was an exception.

Since they were allowed to leave, Jiang Junmo didn’t waste time. He left Sun Shengnan to accompany Lu Xia and the child and went to complete the discharge procedures.

Later, Lu Xia wondered what he was so busy with.

When it was time to leave, Lu Xia and the child were bundled up tightly. Outside the hospital, they saw a cart, the kind pulled by a person. It was unknown where he had found it.

Lu Xia carried the child onto the cart, and a sturdy man pulled it for them to the bus station. As they left, Jiang Junmo discreetly handed him something.

They waited at the bus station. The journey back went smoothly; even though they were on a regular bus, Lu Xia didn’t get too cold.

However, upon reaching their town and getting off the bus, things got a bit complicated. Lu Xia couldn’t walk back to the village by herself.

Due to their hasty return, they hadn’t arranged for a cart in advance. Fortunately, Jiang Junmo went to find Li Hongjun and managed to rent a tractor from the agricultural machinery station to drive her back.

Though the tractor was drafty, the distance to the village was short. With Lu Xia bundled up tightly, she didn’t feel too cold. Still, all the commotion had left her a bit tired.
