Chapter 22 – Poisonous Bestie
“Rourou, don’t say anymore. I don’t like Yang Zhiwen,” Xu Fanghua seemed somewhat annoyed when mentioning Yang Zhiwen.
“…Fine, fine. I won’t say anymore. I’m just giving you advice for your own good. Alright, I’m leaving.”
“Okay, Rourou, thank you.”
The girl named Rourou left, and Xu Fanghua stared at her departing figure for a long time, her eyes filled with melancholy and anticipation.
In the quiet room, Xu Jinning, who had finished eating steamed buns, spoke up, “Big sister, is she your good friend? Her name is Rourou, right? Could her full name be Wei Rou?”
Xu Fanghua’s thoughts were interrupted by Xu Jinning. She couldn’t help but glare at Xu Jinning and said impatiently, “Rourou is indeed my good friend. But how do you know her last name is Wei?”
Xu Jinning’s eyes widened.
[Her last name is really Wei!]
Xu Jinning exclaimed with a raised voice. Xu Fanghua heard it, but she found it strange. Clearly, Xu Jinning’s mouth was closed, and she hadn’t spoken aloud, so why did it seem like she had, allowing Xu Fanghua to hear it?
[Big sister, Wei Rou, she’s not just your plastic friend but also your poisonous bestie.]
Once again, Xu Fanghua heard Xu Jinning speaking without actually opening her mouth.
What’s going on?
Xu Fanghua felt a bit panicked. She had never encountered anything like this before. She looked at Xu Jinning with a slightly terrified expression.
However, she couldn’t fully understand the meaning behind Xu Jinning’s words. What did “plastic friend” mean? A friend is a friend, so what is a plastic friend? And what about a bestie, why is it poisonous?
Although Xu Fanghua didn’t fully understand Xu Jinning’s words, she could confirm that Xu Jinning was speaking ill of Wei Rou.
But Xu Jinning clearly hadn’t spoken out loud.
What was going on?
Suppressing her inner fear, Xu Fanghua wanted to figure out what was happening.
“How do you know Rourou’s last name? You’re not plotting anything, are you?”
“No, absolutely not,” Xu Jinning immediately assured.
[My big sister, what malicious plans could I possibly have? The one plotting against you is your supposed good bestie, Wei Rou.]
Initially, Xu Jinning didn’t pay much attention to what Xu Fanghua and Wei Rou were saying or who Xu Fanghua was associating with. However, when Xu Fanghua mentioned Rourou, the letters they were holding, and the man named Yang Zhiwen from the Dahe Production Brigade, it suddenly reminded Xu Jinning of the plot in the book.
“Big sister, I overheard you talking about some letters just now. Do you need to send a letter?”
This time, Xu Fanghua was completely certain that she could hear what Xu Jinning was saying in her mind without her actually speaking it out loud.
To confirm, and originally not wanting to engage in conversation with Xu Jinning, she followed along with Xu Jinning’s words, “Yes, I need to go to work, and it’s not very convenient for me to send it. I’ll let Rourou help me with it.”
But…
However, each time she sent a letter, there was no response, and a shadow cast over Xu Fanghua’s eyes.
Hearing this, Xu Jinning was entirely certain about the plot in the book.
[Big sister, how could you let Wei Rou send letters for you!]
Xu Fanghua was still puzzled about why she couldn’t let Wei Rou help her with the letters. Soon, Xu Jinning’s inner voice provided the answer.
[My foolish big sister, you’re sending letters to Song Yi, the military doctor in the army, right? You’ve never received a reply because, for these three years, despite appearances, Wei Rou never sent out any of the numerous letters you entrusted her with. Every time she went out, after reading your letters, she tore them up. So, no matter how many letters you sent, none of them reached Song Yi’s hands.]
Hearing this revelation, Xu Fanghua was stunned, almost blurting out, “Impossible!”
Impossible, how could it be!
Wei Rou had clearly helped her send letters. How could she tear them up?
Wei Rou knew she liked Song Yi and wanted to wait for him to come back and marry him.
How could Wei Rou do such a thing?
Impossible, absolutely impossible!
Over the three years, Xu Fanghua couldn’t remember how many letters she had sent to Song Yi. From the beginning, Wei Rou was very enthusiastic about helping her send letters.
Due to exams and later working as a temporary teacher in the commune, Xu Fanghua was too busy and couldn’t spare much time.
Thinking that Wei Rou was so eager to help and was her good friend, she agreed. Over time, it became a habit. Whenever she wrote a letter, regardless of her schedule, she asked Wei Rou to send it.
To avoid troubling Wei Rou, she would often give her any good items she had, like the new hairband she just gave her.
In reality, she had indeed not received a single reply from Song Yi.
Could it be true, as Xu Jinning said, that Wei Rou had torn up all her letters?
Xu Fanghua was unwilling to believe it. After all, Wei Rou had been her good friend since she was 10 years old. Back then, Wei Rou was often mistreated by her parents, and she didn’t even have enough to eat. Xu Fanghua would share her food with her every time.
At that time, Wei Rou said she was Xu Fanghua’s best friend and sister for life. She promised to help if Xu Fanghua ever needed anything in the future. They had been together for nine years now, and Xu Fanghua truly considered Wei Rou her closest friend and sister, just a little less than her own sister, Xu Fangfang.
Over these nine years, Wei Rou had also been good to her. Xu Fanghua couldn’t believe that Wei Rou would do such a thing. She even considered confronting Xu Jinning, asking her not to talk nonsense and not to ruin the sisterly bond between her and Wei Rou.
However, when the words were on the tip of her tongue, she couldn’t bring herself to ask. After all, Xu Jinning hadn’t spoken these words aloud, so what right did she have to question her?
Just when Xu Fanghua was firm in her belief that Wei Rou was her good friend and wouldn’t do such a thing, she heard Xu Jinning’s inner voice again.
[Not only did Wei Rou tear up your letters, but she also pretended to be you and took away all the letters Song Yi sent you over these three years. She hid all those letters in the bedside cabinet at her home.]
[Do you know that every night, Wei Rou looks at those letters and harbors so much hatred towards you? Because Song Yi likes you and sent you so many letters.]
[But Wei Rou also likes Song Yi. When she sees those letters, she becomes insanely jealous, even cursing you while reading the letters at night.]
Once again, Xu Fanghua was left stunned.
What? Song Yi had been sending her letters over these three years, expressing his feelings for her, and it was Wei Rou who took them all away.
Was this true?
Because Wei Rou took them away, she had never received any letters, leading her to think that Song Yi no longer liked her.
Xu Fanghua knew that Song Yi did like her back then, and they even confessed their feelings for each other three years ago when she was 16, and Song Yi was 18.
It was also three years ago when Song Yi was selected to become a military doctor. Before leaving, he confessed his feelings to her, and she reciprocated, confirming their relationship.
