Chapter 53 – The Original Sister-in-law Wen Huihui

Wen Huihui thought that no one saw her, but in fact, Xu Xiangdong and others saw her from the corner of their eyes, but they didn’t look directly at her.

Xu Jinning was the only one who actually looked at her directly.

It was all because of the girl’s gaze, which was too intense.

In that intense gaze, the emotions were complex, including admiration, reproach, and unwillingness…

Although most of the time, that gaze fell on her cheap elder brother, making it uncomfortable to be observed that way.

“Who is that person?” Xu Jinning couldn’t help but ask.

Xu Jinning glanced from a distance at the girl, a few years older than her, with an ordinary appearance, but the facial expression didn’t leave a good impression. The gaze felt uncomfortable.

Although it wasn’t good to judge a person solely based on appearance, Xu Jinning felt like the girl might not be a good person.

To be honest, coming to the Dahe Production Brigade made Xu Jinning a bit afraid.

Because in the Dahe Production Brigade, there was a chosen one, an overpowered main female protagonist selected by the author.

That was Jiang Xiao.

She wanted to meet Jiang Xiao but was also a bit afraid.

She was afraid that meeting Jiang Xiao would lower her intelligence, yet she wanted to try and see if it would really have an impact.

However, the girl in front of her probably wasn’t Jiang Xiao.

“She is Wen Yulan’s cousin, the daughter of her second uncle and aunt, Wen Huihui.”

Xu Xiangdong didn’t recognize the girl, but Aunt Sun, who was on the side, answered Xu Jinning’s question.

“When I came yesterday, the mother and daughter thought that your elder brother was interested in Wen Huihui. They were so happy and proud. Sigh…” Aunt Sun couldn’t help shaking her head. “That family is not someone easy to get along with. If Wen Huihui becomes your sister-in-law, you might not have a good time!”

Although there were no rumors about Wen Huihui being a bad person, Aunt Sun, as a matchmaker with extensive experience, had sharp eyes.

Wen Huihui seems gentle at first glance, but her demeanor suggests otherwise; she doesn’t appear to have a kind and easygoing personality.

Especially her eyes, impure and hiding murky intentions and calculations.

If she becomes the elder sister-in-law of that little girl, the little girl will likely be tormented.

Aunt Sun liked and pitied Xu Jinning. Firstly, Xu Jinning looked frail and delicate, invoking sympathy at first sight. Secondly, the little girl was indeed obedient and had a relatively weak physique. Despite the challenging journey from Qinghe Production Brigade to Dahe Production Brigade, she endured without a single complaint.

At a glance, she was a good girl.

[What? She’s my original sister-in-law, Wen Huihui!]

As soon as this thought came out, Xu Xiangdong, who was walking normally, almost sprained his foot.

What’s going on? What does ‘the original sister-in-law’ mean? Was she the person he was originally going to marry?

Although Xu Xiangdong didn’t know Wen Huihui, he had just glanced at her with his peripheral vision. The girl wasn’t his type, and her gaze made him uncomfortable.

He didn’t like her, really didn’t like her. So how could he marry her?

Xu Xiangdong was completely dumbfounded.

[If that’s Wen Huihui, my feelings were right. She’s indeed a bad person, a really bad person.]

[Big brother, you’re not going to marry Wen Huihui, are you? If you marry Wen Huihui, your whole life will be over.]

[At that time, Wen Huihui will have affairs with others, make you wear a green hat, and make you raise someone else’s child!]

What! Xu Xiangdong’s eyes widened instantly, almost grabbing the little girl’s hand to ask her what’s going on. You can’t talk nonsense.

[Moreover, Wen Huihui is the one who caused the disaster for Wen Yulan!]

[Sigh…]

In the end, Xu Xiangdong only heard a long sigh, and after that, he didn’t hear anything from the little girl.

It bothered him and made him anxious.

He wanted to know why he would marry someone named Wen Huihui. Even if they asked him to marry the “ugly” Wen Yulan, there was no way he would marry Wen Huihui.

Xu Xiangdong paid attention to his first impressions, and he really didn’t feel good about the girl he had just glimpsed. He didn’t like her, didn’t feel like marrying her.

So why did he end up marrying her?

He wanted to ask.

But when it came to the things hinted at by the little girl’s inner thoughts, he couldn’t bring himself to utter a single word.

This little girl, why didn’t she say a few more words?

Forget it, anyway, he was absolutely not going to marry someone named Wen Huihui.

At this moment, what was Xu Jinning doing? Naturally, she was thinking about the plot in the book regarding Wen Huihui.

Although Xu Xiangdong said Wen Huihui wasn’t his type, and he didn’t like her at first sight, this was the awakened Xu Xiangdong speaking.

In the book, Xu Xiangdong had not awakened.

Since he hadn’t awakened, he was merely an expendable character under the author’s control, devoid of independent thoughts. Anything he did was possible.

In the book, Xu Xiangdong fervently pursued Sun Meiwen, but she was obviously just using him.

Later, after using him, she found a way to cut ties with him.

Xu Xiangdong, feeling disheartened, embarked on the familiar path of blind dates.

In the book, Xu Xiangdong never proposed to meet Wen Yulan.

And in the book, the first person he met for marriage was Wen Huihui.

Originally, it wasn’t Wen Huihui but another girl from the Dahe Production Brigade. However, for some unknown reason, the day before the arranged meeting, that girl suddenly fell into the water and got sick.

The meeting was canceled.

It could have been postponed, but the girl’s family, hearing rumors from somewhere, believed that the incident of her falling into the water before the meeting was an ominous sign. Perhaps she and Xu Xiangdong were not suitable for each other. So, they decided not to proceed with the meeting.

The next girl to be considered for the meeting was Wen Huihui.

In the book, the description of Xu Xiangdong and Wen Huihui’s meeting was somewhat vague, but the ultimate result was that the meeting took place.

As a result, Xu Xiangdong and Wen Huihui were engaged and eventually married.

However, their life after marriage was not good at all. From their interactions, it was clear that there was no love between them. They often disagreed, and Wen Huihui frequently had conflicts and arguments with both Xu Xiangdong and Zhang Ailian.

Later in the book, it was revealed that Wen Huihui complained about Xu Xiangdong, accusing him of not liking her. She ended up being with those she had connections with before, giving birth to a child whose father was unknown, but certainly not Xu Xiangdong.

In the book, Xu Xiangdong knew that the child was not his, but he willingly raised the child. He wanted to divorce Wen Huihui, but for various reasons, it never happened.

It seemed like fate had set the course for them to be bound together for a lifetime, living an unhappy life without love, wearing a green hat, and raising someone else’s child.

The “green hat” is a cultural symbol in Chinese society associated with infidelity or being cuckolded. The phrase “wearing a green hat” or “being given a green hat” is a metaphor for a man whose wife or partner is unfaithful to him.

The origins of this symbol are not entirely clear, but one popular theory is related to the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644). According to the legend, the emperor would give a green hat to the husband of a woman he was interested in. This practice supposedly led to the association of the green hat with infidelity and humiliation.
