Chapter 100 – The Disappearance Case

Xu Jinning sat under the tree, resting her chin in her hands as she watched two people nearby talking. Her face was filled with a helpless yet indulgent expression.

The two people not far away were none other than her older brother, Xu Xiangdong, and the still-mud-faced Wen Yulan, who was her future sister-in-law.

Ever since Xu Xiangdong confirmed his relationship with Wen Yulan, he took every opportunity to visit the Dahe Production Brigade.

Of course, he came here to see Wen Yulan.

Out of three times, Xu Xiangdong asked Xu Jinning twice if she wanted to come along.

Xu Jinning’s answer, of course, was: Yes!

At home, there were two big bosses forcing her to study, and she was tired of being stuck at home all the time.

So, going out with her older brother for a stroll to relax was not a bad idea.

Even though it was her older brother and future sister-in-law who were in love.

And she was destined to be a third wheel.

But sitting under the tree like this, breathing the fresh air, and enjoying a moment without having to study or read, was also nice.

The sunlight was just right, and Xu Jinning leaned against the tree, dappled sunlight falling on her, creating a faint golden halo.

Bathing in the warm sunlight, with the gentle breeze brushing her face, this feeling was really nice.

She placed a large leaf on her face, and unknowingly, she slowly closed her eyes and fell asleep.

As she drifted off, Xu Jinning suddenly became aware of someone seemingly calling her name by her ear.

She slowly opened her eyes…

The leaf on her face had slipped off onto the ground at some point, and squatting beside her, the person looking at her tenderly was someone she was familiar with.

However, Xu Jinning was a bit puzzled. How come he was here at this time?

“Dad Zhang Changzheng, is it really you? I’m not mistaken, right?”

No mistake, the person in the police uniform in front of her was indeed Zhang Changzheng.

Since acknowledging Zhang Changzheng as her godfather, Xu Jinning had changed how she addressed him.

Actually, considering the era, it would be more appropriate to call him godfather or Father Changzheng.

But Xu Jinning still felt that calling him Uncle Changzheng before and now calling him Dad Changzheng sounded better!

Zhang Changzheng naturally had no objection.

He knew that city people called their parents mom and dad. In fact, whether it was dad or father, Zhang Changzheng was willing to accept either.

Xu Jinning also noticed a police car not far away.

She suddenly realized, ‘Oh, Dad Changzheng has been promoted, so the bureau gave him a car.’

But why was Dad Changzheng here in broad daylight?

“I’m here to investigate something, so I came…”

Someone at Dahe Production Brigade had reported a case, so Zhang Changzheng drove the police car here.

From afar, he could see Xu Xiangdong and another girl not far away, along with Xu Jinning seemingly asleep under the big tree.

So he stopped the car and walked over.

“Did you come with your older brother?” Zhang Changzheng looked over at Xu Xiangdong not far away.

“Yes, by the way, Dad Changzheng, you said you’re here to investigate something. What is it?” Xu Jinning was curious and couldn’t help asking, only to realize it might not be appropriate after asking, “If you can’t say, then I won’t ask.”

Xu Jinning knew that Zhang Changzheng’s identity meant some things couldn’t be casually talked about.

“It’s not really something that can’t be said. I think everyone at Dahe Production Brigade knows about this…”

“What does everyone at Dahe Production Brigade know?”

At this moment, Xu Xiangdong walked over with Wen Yulan.

Actually, even though Xu Xiangdong was with Wen Yulan, he still kept an eye on Xu Jinning under the big tree.

He also knew about Zhang Changzheng’s arrival.

So he brought Wen Yulan over.

They happened to hear the conversation between Xu Jinning and Zhang Changzheng.

“It’s nothing much, I’m here at Dahe Production Brigade to investigate the disappearance of Wu’s second daughter-in-law.”

“Is it about investigating Sister Ye Chan’s disappearance?” Wen Yulan, who followed Xu Xiangdong, couldn’t help asking and looked at Zhang Changzheng. “Comrade police officer, please make sure to thoroughly investigate Sister Ye Chan’s disappearance. She definitely didn’t run away with another man as rumored.”

“You know about Wu’s second daughter-in-law, Ye Chan’s, case?” Zhang Changzheng looked at Wen Yulan.

“I know a little bit. I have a good relationship with Sister Ye Chan. I know her personality. She has a good relationship with Wu’s second son, and they have three daughters. She loves her three daughters very much, especially the youngest who is just over a month old. Despite facing difficulties before, she never left. How could she leave now?”

At Dahe Production Brigade, Wen Yulan had very few people she got along with, but Ye Chan was one of them.

Ye Chan was the wife of Wu’s second son, and they had three daughters together. Although the in-laws were not pleased that she only had daughters and no sons, Wu’s second son didn’t mind at all. He treated Ye Chan very well, often standing up for her against his parents and even borrowing money to buy land and build a house. Once the house was built, they planned to leave the big family and live on their own.

“… Sister Ye Chan was very happy about the prospect of living independently. She had hope for the future, so how could she suddenly run away with someone?”

“I… I’m more afraid that…” Wen Yulan hesitated for a moment but continued, “that something happened to her!”

As she spoke, a look of worry appeared on her face.

Zhang Changzheng listened to these words, lost in thought.

Ye Chan’s disappearance happened two days ago. Wu’s second son reported it to the police station as a missing person case. At that time, Wu’s second son was very anxious, saying that his wife, who should have been at home, had disappeared.

After that, Zhang Changzheng came to Dahe Production Brigade and the Wu family to investigate.

The Wu couple and others all claimed they hadn’t seen Ye Chan. In fact, the Wu couple even suggested that Ye Chan might be dissatisfied with life at the Wu family and ran away with a man.

Indeed, this rumor originated from the Wu couple.

However, some villagers in the production brigade claimed to have seen Ye Chan heading towards the mountains, with a vague figure of another person, possibly a man, ahead of her!

So, this rumor that Ye Chan ran away with a man became more believable.

But just like Wu’s second son and Wen Yulan, they firmly believed that Ye Chan couldn’t have run away with another man. They were most afraid that something had happened to her.

When Zhang Changzheng and the others were discussing Ye Chan’s disappearance, they didn’t notice Xu Jinning standing on the side. But when she heard the words “Ye Chan,” “disappearance,” “Wu family,” and so on, something seemed to click in her mind, and her eyes widened instantly.

[Ye Chan didn’t disappear at all!]

Xu Jinning’s inner thoughts made Zhang Changzheng turn around to look at her in an instant.

But at that moment, Xu Jinning was lost in her memories of the events and didn’t notice their attention.

[Ye Chan didn’t disappear at all. She’s been kidnapped and left in a cave. Today is the third day, if we don’t rescue her soon, she’ll die after today!]
