Chapter 5: A Mix of Coldness and Mystery
“No matter how much you act, you’ll never surpass the school beauty! Senior Qi will never like you!”
“Better not fall asleep during class and get caught by the teacher!”
The girls spoke while glancing at Su Mu.
Normally, Su Mu would have been too embarrassed to lift her head.
But today, Su Mu acted as if she hadn’t heard a thing, showing no reaction at all.
This made the girls seem like they were performing a monologue, which was quite awkward.
When the bell rang, the girls had to stop talking.
The teacher, upon seeing Su Mu sitting in the front row, was also very surprised.
He knew Su Mu and hadn’t expected her to change so much in a week.
However, as a teacher, he didn’t comment and began the lesson.
…
Su Mu finished a class and looked at her textbook, not really understanding much.
Was she supposed to learn the medicinal properties of various herbs?
To use them for treating diseases?
Something similar to… traditional Chinese medicine?
She felt a bit of a headache. It seemed she didn’t have much talent in this area.
Just then, someone sent her a message on her phone. Su Mu picked it up and glanced at it:
[Feng Sa: Sansan, how have you been lately?]
Feng Sa was the original owner’s childhood friend, although that was just a nice way to put it. In reality, they were only neighbors, with their families having some interactions, so they weren’t close.
Sansan was Su Mu’s nickname, but Feng Sa called her that not out of closeness but because everyone had called her that when they were young, and he got used to it at an early age.
[Feng Sa: Class should be over, right? Want to grab a meal together?]
[Feng Sa: My mom insists on seeing us video call together.]
Su Mu replied: [Sure]
On the other end, Feng Sa was standing at the gate of C University, raising an eyebrow at the brief reply.
Tsk, this didn’t seem like Su Mu’s usual style at all.
He was handsome, and even while standing lazily, wearing a mask, he had been asked for his WeChat several times.
“Sorry, I have a girlfriend,” Feng Sa declined several people, feeling a bit impatient. Why hadn’t Su Mu arrived yet?
“Handsome, don’t lie. Give me your WeChat. I don’t believe you have a girlfriend,” a girl persisted.
Just then, Feng Sa spotted Su Mu. He casually pointed: “Look, that’s her.”
The girl followed Feng Sa’s gaze and saw the strange girl from the neighboring class who always kept her head down and stayed by herself.
She remembered the girl’s name—Su Mu.
Apparently, yesterday Su Mu confessed to the school heartthrob and got rejected.
But today… something seemed different about her.
While the girl was lost in thought, Feng Sa had already walked over. “Sansan, over here!”
As soon as he spoke, and Su Mu’s cold eyes looked over, Feng Sa, like the girl who had asked for his WeChat earlier, was stunned.
Was this… Su Mu?
Under the gray sky, the busy school gate was behind the girl, but her expression was indifferent, isolating her from everyone else.
The streetlights shone on her light-colored skirt, giving it a glow like clear moonlight, mingling coldness with mystery.
“Feng Sa.” The girl called his name with precision.
“Sansan…?” Feng Sa doubted his own eyes.
“Let’s go.” Su Mu seemed unaware of his confusion.
Feng Sa matched her pace. “Sansan?”
“What?”
Feng Sa scrutinized her. “You seem very different today.”
Su Mu glanced at him. “You seem different today too.”
“Me?”
“You never used to talk this much.”
“…” Feng Sa.
That was true.
After all, he and Su Mu never got along well. Whenever they were together, they had nothing to say.
But due to their parents’ relationship, they often had to meet.
This resulted in them being silent around each other, making it obvious to anyone that they weren’t close.
…Of course, this did not include their parents.
Their parents were inexplicably confident in their relationship.
They found a grilled fish restaurant and ordered their meal.
Feng Sa opened his phone, and Su Mu realized he was about to complete his mother’s task—making a video call to show that they were together.
“Feng Sa.”
“Hm?”
Su Mu said calmly, “How about we make a deal?”
Feng Sa was puzzled. “A deal?”
“Yes.” Su Mu explained succinctly, “I know you’re good at herbalism. If you tutor me, I’ll handle your mom for you in the future.”
Feng Sa paused.
He looked steadily at Su Mu, unsure whether to be more surprised that she wanted tutoring from him or that she offered to deal with his mom.
The introverted Su Mu was acting very strange today.
“So, tell me, what happened to you?” Feng Sa was genuinely curious. “Why such a big change?”
Su Mu thought for two seconds, her cold eyes slightly downcast. “I got rejected after confessing my feelings.”
“?” Feng Sa.
“!” Feng Sa.
Although he wasn’t very close to Su Mu, they had known each other for over ten years.
Not being curious was impossible!
Feng Sa’s gossiping instincts flared up. He tried to suppress his curiosity and asked casually, “Who did you confess to? Someone from your class?”
“Qi Sui.”
“…” Feng Sa.
That annoying guy with a reputation similar to his own?
The school heartthrob at C University, with enough admirers to form a line around the male dormitory?
How did an ordinary girl like Su Mu get the courage to confess to Qi Sui?
It wasn’t that Feng Sa looked down on Su Mu, but… she really was quite ordinary.
Her only memorable trait was being “the pretty girl in that class.”
Her name wasn’t even something people paid attention to.
“What’s wrong?” Su Mu’s tone was calm, her voice as cool as jade.
Feng Sa shook his head. “Nothing…”
“But why did you suddenly decide to study hard?”
Su Mu replied, “Turning grief into motivation.”
“…” Feng Sa.
Although that made sense, it sounded bizarre coming from Su Mu.
Oh well, he didn’t want to think too much about it.
“Fine, but you need to prove you can handle my mom first,” Feng Sa said as he started a video call. “Don’t start stuttering or blushing…”
As he spoke, he glanced at her, meeting her cold eyes, and suddenly fell silent.
The call was quickly answered, and the face of a middle-aged woman appeared on the screen. Her hair was slightly curled, her face was beautiful, and her voice was kind. “Sansan?”
Feng Sa was used to being ignored, so he handed the phone to Su Mu. “Your daughter is right here.”
Su Mu took the phone, her previously cold expression softening slightly.
“Auntie.” She lowered her voice.
“Oh! Sansan, how have you been lately?”
“I’ve been good. I’ve made a lot of friends, and my studies are going well. Feng Sa often takes me out to eat delicious food.”
Feng Sa watched in amazement as Su Mu calmly told a string of lies.
I want more so badly, I am liking this story so far.
