Chapter 416 – Who Should I Trust?
Lin Wangshu really wanted to take the letter to Shen Huai right away, but she restrained herself and decided to finish reading the letter first. At the very least, she needed to know Xu Jinning’s exact location in Hong Kong so she could better plan to k*ll her.
However, after reading Xu Jinning’s letter, Lin Wangshu was completely shocked. Her legs gave out, and she collapsed onto the ground, her face filled with confusion and fear.
“No, it’s impossible. Ahuai would never treat me like this. He wouldn’t…” Lin Wangshu murmured, but even as she spoke, she wasn’t confident.
Because she had noticed Shen Huai’s changes recently.
Shen Huai’s changes made her feel that he was keeping secrets from her, and the occasional scrutinizing glances he gave her frightened her.
In truth, she knew deep down that she didn’t entirely trust Shen Huai.
Otherwise, why would she have said that she was the author, the creator of this world, when she revealed her secret about being from another world? She had added that if she were gone, this world and everyone in it would disappear as well.
She was indeed the author, but that last part was something she had made up.
Perhaps, deep down, she was afraid that Shen Huai might harm her, so she had said it to make him wary of her.
She had been waiting, waiting for Shen Huai to k*ll Xu Jinning, waiting for her luck to return to her. Then everything would be fine, and she wouldn’t have to fear Shen Huai anymore.
But now, what did Xu Jinning say?
She said that even if she were k*lled, it wouldn’t matter because she hadn’t stolen Lin Wangshu’s so-called luck.
However, as the protagonist and author, she did still have a bit of luck left. But this small amount of luck was useless to Lin Wangshu—practically non-existent.
But to Shen Huai, it was a different story.
In her letter, Xu Jinning also mentioned that Shen Huai was seeking out a master in metaphysics, intending to transfer the luck from Lin Wangshu to himself. When that happened, the fate of Lin Wangshu and her unborn child would be sealed.
Upon reading this, Lin Wangshu suddenly remembered overhearing that Shen Huai had sent people out in Hong Kong to find someone.
“Could it be that he’s looking for a master in metaphysics?”
“No, that’s impossible!”
Lin Wangshu’s heart resisted the idea. She preferred to believe that Shen Huai was looking for the master to deal with Xu Jinning, not to transfer her luck.
“I am the woman Ahuai loves the most, and I’m carrying his child.”
Although Lin Wangshu said this out loud, having lived through the modern world’s flood of information and recently noticing Shen Huai’s changes, she still felt uneasy.
She thought, ‘What if?’
‘What if Xu Jinning was right?’
Lin Wangshu wanted to confront Shen Huai, but she was too afraid. If Xu Jinning’s claims were true, asking Shen Huai about it might be like walking into a trap—she could even end up imprisoned by him.
“Who should I trust?”
After much deliberation, Lin Wangshu decided to wait a little longer. Slowly, she stood up from the floor.
She needed to find out exactly who Shen Huai had been searching for during this time.
If it was indeed as Xu Jinning claimed, then she knew she couldn’t stay by Shen Huai’s side any longer. At that point, she would have to meet Xu Jinning.
But could Xu Jinning really be here to save her?
Would Xu Jinning really be so kind? After all, if Xu Jinning knew her name, she must also know that in her previous life, she had been the one who pushed her down the stairs to her death.
One could say she was her enemy.
Would Xu Jinning really be so kind?
Staring at the letter in front of her, Lin Wangshu thought, I’ll wait a little longer.
After all, the meeting Xu Jinning mentioned was set for three days from now. She could decide then.
As for the letter…
Lin Wangshu hesitated for a long time before finally taking out a lighter and slowly burning the letter.
This letter absolutely could not be seen by Shen Huai. Even if it turned out that Xu Jinning was lying in the letter, Shen Huai must never find out about it. Otherwise, what would he think if she doubted his feelings for her?
As for telling Shen Huai about Xu Jinning’s whereabouts later, she had already memorized the location.
If she could confirm that Shen Huai truly loved her and had no ill intentions, she would tell him where Xu Jinning was so that he could finish her off.
But if Xu Jinning was telling the truth…
Then this letter definitely couldn’t be seen by Shen Huai, or it would become her death warrant.
So, it was better to burn it.
For now, she would keep the fact that Xu Jinning was in Hong Kong to herself.
She would reveal everything to Shen Huai only after she had figured it all out.
If Shen Huai really was as Xu Jinning described, then he was far too dangerous.
“What’s that smell? Were you burning something?”
The sudden voice behind her startled Lin Wangshu.
Realizing who it was, she was so frightened that her belly suddenly ached.
“Ow.” She clutched her stomach.
“Shushu, are you okay?” Shen Huai quickly came over and scooped Lin Wangshu into his arms. “Maybe I should take you to the hospital.”
“No need, just help me to the sofa so I can sit down. You just startled me, that’s all.”
“Shushu, you’re so easily scared. But it’s my fault—I shouldn’t have startled you from behind, especially since you’re pregnant,” Shen Huai comforted Lin Wangshu, helping her to the sofa.
“Are you sure you don’t need to go to the hospital?”
“No, it’s not serious. I just need to rest for a bit. If you have things to do, go ahead.”
“Alright, but if you feel unwell, make sure to tell me. I won’t disturb your rest now.”
As Lin Wangshu closed her eyes, Shen Huai didn’t say anything further and began to leave.
With her eyes shut, Lin Wangshu’s heart raced as she silently counted the sound of his footsteps.
As she counted, the footsteps suddenly stopped.
She opened her eyes and saw that Shen Huai had paused at the doorway, his gaze fixed on a pile of ashes.
It was the remnants of the letter she had just burned, but fortunately, it was all reduced to ashes, with no trace left behind.
“Shushu, were you burning something just now?” Shen Huai asked, his tone carrying an unclear, enigmatic edge.
Lin Wangshu’s heart skipped a beat, but she quickly replied, “Yes, I was thinking about what our baby might look like once they’re born, so I started sketching. But nothing I drew seemed right, so I got frustrated and burned the half-finished drawing.”
She tried to keep her composure.
But only she knew how close her heart was to leaping out of her chest under Shen Huai’s gaze.
Shen Huai stared at her for a long moment before a sudden smile appeared on his face. “So that’s what it was. Shushu, if you want to draw what our baby might look like, we can have a professional artist do it once the baby is born.”
“Yes, Ahuai, you’re right. Then we can have a family portrait done, and I’ll frame it.”
“We could even take a photograph. Alright, you rest now. I’ve got some work to do, but I’ll check on you later.”
