Chapter 167 – Difficult Delivery

Afterward, the two of them went to the hospital.

However, when they arrived, they were both a bit unsure of which clinic to buy the protective measures from.

They wandered around the first floor but felt too embarrassed to ask. Jiang Junmo, in particular, had blushing ears since they entered.

In the end, Lu Xia registered at the obstetrics and gynecology department and, with her face flushed, asked about the protective measures from the doctor’s puzzled gaze.

The doctor saw that they were both young, at an age when they should be having children, and it was rare for someone of their age to be unwilling to have kids. He thought they were just messing around with each other and immediately scowled.

Fortunately, Lu Xia had brought their marriage certificate in advance and explained that they were educated youths and, for now, not ready to have children. The doctor finally believed them and issued a certificate for them to buy the protective measures.

After leaving the hospital, Lu Xia and Jiang Junmo were both beet-red. Looking at each other, they were almost turning into monkeys’ buttocks.

Unable to hold back, Lu Xia burst into laughter. People in this era were indeed reserved!

But at least their mission was accomplished.

At this moment, Jiang Junmo suppressed his embarrassment and tried not to think about the matter. Instead, he asked, “Are we still going to the nearby place?”

Lu Xia knew he was referring to the black market and nodded, “Of course.”

So the two of them headed to the black market again, but this time, they didn’t dare to be too obvious. They had slightly disguised themselves by wearing some old clothes they had brought in advance.

However, once they entered, they were disappointed. Perhaps due to the recent Lunar New Year, many people didn’t have much money left, so there weren’t many things being sold at the black market, and they didn’t even see anyone selling meat. In the end, they only bought some pastries and left.

Lu Xia felt a bit dissatisfied about not buying any meat, so she pulled Jiang Junmo to the county’s supply and marketing cooperative to look around. However, by now, they had sold all the meat and only left some very clean bones. Lu Xia didn’t mind and bought some bones to stew with pickled vegetables.

After that, there wasn’t much else they wanted to buy, so they went back to the bus station to catch a ride home.

Since Li Aiguo had borrowed their bicycle yesterday, they had to walk to the town today. Fortunately, they didn’t buy much, so they weren’t tired on the way back.

However, when they returned, they noticed that the villagers seemed a bit strange. Many of them were gathered together, chatting with regretful expressions on their faces.

The two of them didn’t stop to ask questions because they were carrying things. However, when they passed the educated youth spot, they learned from Sun Shengnan that something had happened in the village.

It turned out that yesterday, when giving birth, Wu Xiuhong had a difficult delivery. After hours of trying, she couldn’t deliver the baby. The midwife couldn’t do anything and said that her body was too small, and the baby couldn’t come out. So, Li Aiguo went to find the doctor from the health center overnight.

The doctor from the health center was a man, so the villagers usually wouldn’t call him for childbirth-related matters. However, the situation was urgent, and there was no time to consider such things.

Upon arriving, the doctor immediately realized the seriousness of the situation. Due to the delay, both the mother and the child were at risk.

In the end, the bleeding couldn’t be stopped, and by the time they could transfer her to the hospital, it was too late. Despite the doctor’s efforts to save her, they couldn’t bring her back.

Lu Xia was stunned after hearing the news. “Wu Xiuhong… is gone?”

She had met Wu Xiuhong before. Just like her name suggested, Wu Xiuhong was elegant and fair, with a pleasant personality. But now, a living person had just vanished…

“Yes,” Sun Shengnan sighed. “Who could have thought? When she was pregnant, everyone said she was lucky. But who would have expected that the child would come, but she would be gone…”

Chapter 168 – Unable to Accept

.

Lu Xia was still having a hard time accepting it, “Then why didn’t they go to the hospital when she was giving birth? Li Aiguo was also an educated youth from the city. Why did he trust the rural midwife?”

Sun Shengnan also felt helpless at her question, “I heard that he originally planned to take his wife to the hospital to give birth, but the due date came earlier than expected, and he didn’t anticipate it. Sigh, I heard that hospitals can perform cesarean sections now. If they had gone, things might have been different.”

“Yes.”

But it was too late to say such things now. Lu Xia sighed, “How is the child?”

“The child is okay, it’s a girl. Besides being a bit weak, she should be able to survive.”

“That’s good, at least there’s some consolation.”

“Yeah,” Sun Shengnan sighed again, “You didn’t see how Li Aiguo looked today. He’s a grown man, but he was just standing there blankly, holding his daughter. It’s like all his spirit has left him, and he suddenly aged several years.”

Hearing this, Lu Xia also felt melancholic. She didn’t expect that this couple, envied by both the educated youths and the villagers, would end up like this.

“So, what is he going to do now? Will he return to the educated youth spot?” After all, he was currently living at his wife’s family’s home, and now that she was gone, they might not let him continue to stay.

Sun Shengnan shook her head directly, “Probably not. I can see that the Wu family treats him well. Big Sister Xu went to console him today with tears in her eyes. Besides, there’s a child. He shouldn’t move away.”

“That’s good.”

Lu Xia nodded, but after hearing about this, they didn’t feel like talking much.

When they returned home, both of them fell into silence. Jiang Junmo suddenly said after putting away the things, “When you give birth in the future, let’s go to the hospital one month in advance.”

Lu Xia, who was still feeling upset, retorted with a tinge of annoyance, “Do you think the hospital is your home? If you go there, they might just kick us out.”

Jiang Junmo seriously thought about it and said, “Then we can find a place to stay near the hospital. It’ll be convenient when it’s time to give birth.”

Seeing him already planning ahead, Lu Xia didn’t bother arguing further. She interrupted, “Alright, hurry up and get a few pickled cabbages. We’ll stew the bones for dinner.”

Still contemplating his plans, Jiang Jun Mo replied, “…Got it.”

After cooking for a while, they heard a voice outside.

Jiang Junmo opened the door and went out.

Lu Xia followed and saw a young man from the village. She had seen him before, but didn’t know his name.

The young man’s eyes were red, but he forced a smile when he saw Jiang Junmo. He pushed his bicycle inside and handed him a bag of things before leaving.

Jiang Junmo came back, pushing the bike with the bag in hand, and before Lu Xia could ask, he said, “It’s Wu Xiujun, Comrade Wu’s younger brother. He came to return the bike and brought some red eggs as a gift.”

Lu Xia knew that it was a custom in this area to give red eggs to close relatives when someone in their family had a baby. Even though the mother was no longer here, they still gave them, showing the importance they attached to the child.

Lu Xia nodded, “They probably gave them to us because we didn’t ask for rent. Let’s keep them; Big Sister Xu is a nice person, and being too polite is not good.”

“Okay.”

After Wu Xiuhong’s passing, the village fell silent for a while. After that, Lu Xia had also seen Li Aiguo a few times. After all, the primary school was about to start, and he slowly began to return to a more normal life.

However, he was no longer as meticulous as before, and he looked a bit disheveled. But he treated his daughter well. Lu Xia often saw him taking his daughter for a walk, and only then could she see a smile on his face.

Of course, these were all stories that came later.

  1. 😭😢😢😢😭 We’ve only know them for two (four) chapters. But, it isn’t less heartbreaking. I hope LAG and the Xu can come over their loss and sadness. I wish the best for them, including for the babygirl.

  2. Shows an often neglected side of transmigration stories. Childbirth is dangerous, and even more so back in the day when medicine was not as advanced. A lot of stories simply gloss over this.
