Chapter 295 – The Official Start of the College Entrance Exam

In December 1977, the winter in the northeast was cold, but it couldn’t suppress the enthusiasm of the candidates.

Early in the morning, after going through several inspection procedures, Lu Xia finally sat in the exam room.

She was about to face one of the most crucial turning points in her life.

She felt a bit nervous, but more than that, she felt anticipation. She knew she would succeed. She had prepared so much in advance, so she was confident in her success.

Soon, the political test paper was distributed. Lu Xia took a deep breath, carefully wrote her name, and then began answering the questions…

Lu Xia took the science track in the exam. On the first day, she took the political and language tests, and on the second day, she took the math and physics and chemistry tests.

After the first subject, when Lu Xia came out, she saw many candidates couldn’t hold back their tears. Some even yelled and gave up in despair, while others sighed and left directly.

When Lu Xia met up with the educated youths after the exam, no one explicitly discussed how they did. However, the grim expressions on their faces indicated that the short preparation time wasn’t sufficient.

Yet, compared to those who left the exam in tears, they considered themselves lucky, at least better off than them.

The two days of exams quickly came to an end.

The educated youths returned to their villages.

Lu Xia stayed behind for an English supplementary test scheduled for the next day. The English test didn’t count as part of the official results; it was only for reference since she had applied for an English major.

As for Jiang Junmo, he needed to travel to the provincial capital for an art supplementary test.

Yes, due to the low number of candidates applying for the art major, the province organized all the art supplementary tests in the provincial capital.

However, since some candidates lived far away, the supplementary test was scheduled three days after the regular exams.

Their county wasn’t too far from the provincial capital; a few hours on the train would get them there. Tickets had been bought in advance.

Actually, it would have been fine to go a day earlier.

But Lu Xia was concerned that if he left too late, he might not make it in time. Also, there was a need for some preliminary preparations. So, she had purchased a morning ticket for him the next day.

Therefore, the two of them stayed in the inn for the night.

The next day, at the entrance of the inn, Lu Xia and Jiang Junmo parted ways. One headed to the exam center, while the other went to the train station.

It was at this moment that Lu Xia realized Su Man had also not returned to the village.

Upon asking, she found out that Su Man had also applied for an English major.

Lu Xia was surprised. Why hadn’t she seen her last night?

However, she didn’t delve further. The two of them went to the exam center together, exchanged words of encouragement, and then went their separate ways.

The English test went smoothly for Lu Xia. For someone who had already passed the English Proficiency Test Level 8 (CET-8), this test was a breeze.

After finishing the test, Lu Xia visited a department store, bought a few things for Aunt Cuiyun, and then headed back.

Upon arriving, she didn’t go straight home but went to pick up Kang Kang.

When Lu Xia arrived at Aunt Cuiyun’s house, Kang Kang was sitting on a small stool outside, staring at the entrance without blinking.

When he heard the gate open, his eyes lit up. When he saw the familiar figure, he immediately stood up and rushed over.

“Mom!”

Lu Xia was hugged by Kang Kang as soon as she entered the gate.

At this moment, the pent-up longing burst forth, causing her eyes to turn red.

She immediately crouched down, hugging Kang Kang tightly. “It’s Mom. Mom’s back. Did Kang Kang miss Mom?”

“I missed you.”

Kang Kang was tearing up too, but he had promised Dad that he’d be a strong little man, so he discreetly wiped away his tears with his sleeve, not wanting Mom to see.

However, Lu Xia noticed the gesture.

She felt even more heartbroken, but she didn’t expose him.

“Mom missed Kang Kang too. Has Kang Kang been obedient these days?”

“I’ve been obedient. I’ve been good. Granny Cuiyun praised me!”

Chapter 296 – Sensible Kang Kang

.

“Yeah, your Kang Kang is really sensible. He’s so young, yet he doesn’t cry or make a fuss. He even helps me with chores. Oh my, I’ve never seen a child more sensible than him. Compared to our Hu Zi, he’s like a mischievous monkey!”

Speaking was Aunt Cuiyun, with her daughter-in-law and her one-year-old grandson Hu Zi following behind her.

They had noticed Lu Xia’s arrival earlier, but they didn’t interrupt as they saw her talking to Kang Kang.

Upon hearing her speak, Lu Xia felt a bit embarrassed.

“Sorry for bothering you these past few days, Aunt. As long as Kang Kang didn’t tire you out.”

“Oh, not at all. Kang Kang is really easy to take care of. He’s no trouble at all. You guys are handling important matters, and if I can be of any help, that’s great.”

Lu Xia felt relieved upon hearing this and didn’t plan to stay long. She handed over the gifts she brought to them.

“Well then, Aunt, I’ll take Kang Kang home now. There’s no one at home these days, so I need to quickly go back and tend to the fire in the kang bed. Otherwise, we won’t be able to sleep at night.”

Aunt Cuiyun didn’t try to keep her, saying, “Alright, I’ll accept the gifts. These are things given by a future university student, so I’ll keep them safe.”

Lu Xia smiled upon hearing this, then she took Kang Kang home.

With no one home for several days, it was cold inside. After they entered, Lu Xia found a small stool for Kang Kang to sit on, then she went outside to fetch firewood for the stove.

However, Kang Kang didn’t sit down. He followed behind Lu Xia, walking in her footsteps without saying a word.

Lu Xia didn’t stop him, understanding that he probably wasn’t used to being away from his parents for so long.

For the past few days, he had been well-behaved, enduring his longing without causing a fuss. Now that he saw his mother, he couldn’t hold back anymore, fearing that she would leave again.

Lu Xia felt a pang of heartache at this thought.

She decided that she wouldn’t leave him for such a long time again in the future.

Once the fire was lit, the room finally warmed up.

Kang Kang finally felt certain that his mother wouldn’t leave again, so he spoke up, “What about dad?”

Lu Xia chuckled at his question. The little guy finally remembered his dad.

“Your dad hasn’t finished his exams yet. He’ll be back in a few days.”

“Oh, dad’s taking exams!”

“Yes, he’s taking an art exam!”

“Art?” Kang Kang’s eyes brightened upon hearing this. Evidently, he liked art.

Lu Xia smiled at his reaction. “When your dad comes back, you can ask him to teach you. I’m not good at art.”

She had tried to learn out of curiosity before, but perhaps she didn’t have the natural talent for it.

Jiang Junmo could create various types of art, including watercolors and oil paintings.

Lu Xia found oil paintings to be vibrant in color, so she had tried to learn, but her attempts resulted in messy, unsatisfactory paintings and being covered in paint. She even had to cut off a strand of hair because she couldn’t wash the paint out.

In the end, she gave up.

Isn’t there that saying, ‘Nothing is difficult if you’re willing to give up.’

She had decided never to touch oil painting again.

Kang Kang nodded vigorously at Lu Xia’s words. “Paint Little One!”

“Sure, when your dad comes back, he can teach you to paint!”

‘Little One’ was a mother hen in the house. Since Kang Kang had started eating solid food, the five hens were spared from becoming meals and were kept for egg-laying.

Later, as Kang Kang started speaking, Lu Xia named each hen while showing them to him, from ‘Little One’ to ‘Little Five’…

She had talked about it so much that Kang Kang had learned all their names and could accurately identify ‘Little One’.

The hens looked quite similar, and sometimes even Lu Xia had trouble telling them apart, unsure if Kang Kang was guessing or genuinely recognizing them.

But ever since he learned that the hens could lay eggs, Kang Kang’s gaze toward them changed. Every morning, he would go check their nest and collect the eggs.

Lu Xia entrusted this task to him without worry; not once did he accidentally break an egg.

Kang Kang’s affection for ‘Little One’ and the other hens didn’t stop there.

After learning art from Jiang Junmo, he had drawn ‘Little One’ multiple times. Surprisingly, for a child just over two years old, his drawing skills had evolved from scribbles to recognizable shapes.

Even Jiang Junmo had praised his talent.

And here was Lu Xia, a grown adult, unable to match her son’s artistic prowess. Such moments brought tears to the eyes of the proud mother…
