Chapter 545 – Visit from Lu Qiu

In the evening, as Lu Xia lay next to Jiang Junmo, she sighed.

Jiang Junmo asked with concern, “What’s wrong? Still worried about what happened during the day?”

Lu Xia nodded, “Yeah, I’m just thinking, what have I gained by becoming their daughter? Although they raised me, I also worked hard for the family in the first 17 years and repaid them. After that, I didn’t harm them further, which was already a way of repaying their upbringing. But they haven’t brought me any benefits. And now, when something happens, I’m the one affected. Even though I’ve cut ties with them, what does it matter? In the eyes of outsiders, they’re still my parents. If something happens to them, I’ll still be implicated.”

Jiang Junmo knew she was not resigned, but there was nothing he could do. After all, blood ties couldn’t be easily severed. So, he could only listen to her vent. When she was tired and her mood was better, he hugged her to comfort her.

The next day, Lu Xia went to school as usual.

Although she was worried, she had to go to see if her job had been affected.

Now she finally understood the nervousness her classmates often felt.

Soon after sitting in the classroom, a classmate from the adjacent class told her that someone was looking for her downstairs.

Lu Xia, puzzled, went downstairs and saw a figure that wasn’t entirely unexpected.

“Sister, do you have time? I’d like to talk to you.”

The person was Lu Qiu.

Lu Xia, upon hearing her words, didn’t refuse. She was very curious about what was going on with the Lu family.

The two of them talked on campus.

The lower grades were in class at this time, so there weren’t many people around. They sat on a bench by the lake.

For a while, neither of them spoke.

After a while, Lu Xia asked, “You didn’t go to work today?”

She remembered that Lu Qiu had mentioned she had graduated from normal college, so she should have a job by now, right?

“No, I took the day off,” Lu Qiu shook her head.

“The police came to the school to look for me yesterday, and it was a big commotion. Although in the end, it wasn’t about me, the school still asked me to take a few days off.”

Lu Xia nodded upon hearing this, “Do you know what’s going on with the Lu family?”

Lu Qiu shook her head, “I don’t know the specifics, but I noticed something was off before the New Year.

After I got married, I didn’t go home much. Before the New Year, I bought some New Year goods for the family and sent them over. But when I got home, I found everything was already prepared, and they were all high-end products that were quite expensive.

Mom didn’t appreciate what I brought back and criticized me. I didn’t bother listening and just left.

But the more I thought about it after I left, the more I felt something was wrong. Where did the money come from to buy all this? Mom is quite frugal in everyday life and wouldn’t be willing to buy such things.

Later, when I went home for the second day of the Lunar New Year, I was shocked when I saw older sister.

She had completely changed, wearing fur coats and heavy makeup, and everything she took out was very expensive.

Brother-in-law was the same, completely different from before. Mom treats them like royalty.

That’s when I found out that older sister and brother-in-law had made money, and the family had benefited too.

I asked them how they made the money, but they were evasive, treating me as if I shouldn’t know. I got fed up and stopped asking.

After that, because I didn’t want to see their faces anymore, I didn’t go back. Who knew something like this would happen.”

Lu Xia sighed upon hearing this.

“Is this affecting you in any way?”

Lu Qiu shook her head, “No, my in-laws are quite reasonable, and they know what kind of people my parents are. As for the school, it’s fine too. After all, I’ve been working there for a long time, haven’t made any mistakes, and they won’t fire me.”

Lu Xia nodded, “That’s good.”

Chapter 546 – Dust Settles

.

“What about you? Does this affect you, second sister?”

Lu Xia sighed, not hiding anything from her. “I am in my senior year now, and I am about to be assigned a job. If this hadn’t happened, I should have been working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and would have become a government official in the future. But that’s less likely now… However, the results haven’t come out yet, so I don’t know the specifics.”

Lu Qiu sighed upon hearing this, wanting to say something but not knowing how to start. She felt that her second sister was in a worse situation than her. While she didn’t like her situation, she still maintained contact with the family. On the other hand, her second sister had severed ties, and yet, she was the most affected in the end.

Thinking this way, the frustration and embarrassment of being taken away by the police was nothing compared to what her second sister was going through. At least, her job remained unaffected.

The two of them talked for a few more sentences, and then Lu Qiu left. Initially, she wanted her second sister to help find out what had happened, but now she felt too embarrassed to bring it up.

As for Lu Xia, she didn’t know what Lu Qiu was thinking. She didn’t bring it up, and neither did she ask. After they finished talking, she went back. She needed to go to the counselor’s office to inquire if her job would be affected.

However, the counselor didn’t know either. The news about the Lu family had not spread yet. The counselor just mentioned that her job placement had been tentatively arranged at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. However, before the final list came out, there would be multiple reviews. Everything was subject to the final result, so she was advised not to worry.

Lu Xia could only go back and continue waiting.

A few days later, the case involving the Lu family was finally clarified.

Lu Xia didn’t know much about the specifics, only learning a bit from her second brother-in-law. The mastermind behind assisting foreign forces was her eldest sister’s husband, and the rest of the Lu family, including her parents, were unaware.

However, it was precisely because they were unaware that her eldest sister’s actions were so brazen, leading to her exposure.

In this case, her brother-in-law was the main culprit. After investigating the individuals involved, they were imprisoned accordingly. The eldest sister was sentenced to life imprisonment, and although the parents were unaware, they were sentenced to 20 years for their involvement in the activities. As for Lu Dong, he didn’t do anything, and he didn’t know anything about their actions. However, because he benefited financially, they took away the money he gained through illegal means and sentenced him to eight years.

As for her eldest sister’s family, they too were imprisoned for their involvement.

In summary, after this incident, everyone in the Lu family, except Lu Qiu, was imprisoned.

Lu Xia knew that the law in this era handed out strict punishments, so she wasn’t surprised.

However, now that her parents were in prison, her background was no longer clean, and she wouldn’t be able to become a public servant even in modern times.

At this moment, Lu Xia was almost certain.

So, the next day, when she was called to the counselor’s office, she was already calm.

The counselor could see that she likely already had an idea of why she was being called.

“Do you know why I’m looking for you?”

Lu Xia nodded, “Because of the job.”

The counselor saw that she probably had an idea and didn’t beat around the bush. “You probably won’t be able to go to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs now. You should be aware of the specific reasons.”

Lu Xia nodded, and the constant anxiety in her heart finally subsided. The dust had settled.

“Now your job needs to be reassigned. Due to the previous reasons, government-related jobs are not an option anymore. But your performance has been consistently good over the years. Teacher Li recommended you to stay at the university. I also applied to the school, and the school has agreed. If you have no objections, this matter is settled.”

Lu Xia was surprised to hear this. She hadn’t expected the school to be willing to let her stay.

She had been rejected by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs due to her background, so didn’t the school check backgrounds as well?

Seemingly understanding what Lu Xia was thinking, the counselor directly said, “Don’t worry. The school has also thoroughly investigated after learning about your situation, and they have agreed to this. Moreover, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has given you a very positive evaluation. Although they can’t accept you due to other reasons, they have praised you as a rare talent.”

Lu Xia felt grateful upon hearing this and stood up to bow to the counselor. “Thank you for helping me.”

The counselor smiled, “Don’t be so polite. You are my student, and I have to arrange things for you properly. Mainly, it’s because of Teacher Li, who specially assured the school about your character, that the school agreed.”

Feeling moved, Lu Xia said, “Regardless, thank you for helping me.”

The counselor smiled, “Alright, you can go back. We’ll be colleagues in the future, so we’ll see each other again.”

Lu Xia smiled and left.

  1. tbh this is so sad… i can’t accept it but also helpless for the MC. So far, she is the most normal MC who transmigrate i ever seen but because of this i cant stop reading this novel. But again still this is so sad, sigh.. i trully feeling sad :'(

    thank you for the translation…

  2. This is awful. She was looking forward to becoming a diplomat so much as well, and now, nothing? Just relegated to becoming a university teacher? Fine, it’s not like it’s not a good job, but it really doesn’t hold a candle to what she was on track to become. 🙁

  3. She can’t become a diplomat “because it’s a public/civil servant job”. But, she can become a public university teacher. What? Is a public university teacher not a government’s employee? Then, who is paying her salary? Where do the university get the money for it? Donations and the payment for doing projects?

  4. Lu Xia truly suffered the most from her family’s actions and she didn’t even get one benefit from it. I’m actually surprised she ended up losing her job, but it’s a realistic setting, so I appreciate the author’s development in this area. I must say that it truly sucks for her brother, Lu Dong, because he wasn’t aware of anything and still lost all the money and received an eight-year jail sentence. Even though he didn’t know, though, it doesn’t excuse the fact it was obvious the money was shady and he still took it willingly, so unfortunately he was partly responsible for his sentence.

    Thanks for the chapter! 😀
