Chapter 681 – Plump

“Actually, Zhenzhen had symptoms for quite some time, but we didn’t pay much attention to them. Ever since Zhenzhen was born, I’ve always spoiled her. Maybe it’s because she’s the first child and a girl. My own childhood was difficult as the eldest daughter, so when she was born, I wanted to treat her as well as I could.

Her father is the same; he spoils her even more than her younger brother. He always gave her the best food, and he bought her everything she wanted. Zhenzhen didn’t seem to care about gaining weight; she loved to eat. She would eat more at every meal than I did. Perhaps because she ate so much, she was chubby from a young age. She got bigger and rounder, and everyone said our child was blessed.

But who could have anticipated that a while ago, she started complaining of hunger all the time, even though she was eating a lot. She felt like she couldn’t get full. Strangely, the more she ate, the thinner she became. She may look plump now, but she used to be even heavier. She’s already lost weight compared to before.

At first, we didn’t think much of it. We assumed she was just being greedy. However, recently, she started experiencing other symptoms – nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and excessive sleepiness. She sleeps so deeply that we can’t wake her up.

That’s when we began to suspect that something was wrong, but medical examinations at local hospitals couldn’t identify the cause. We had no choice but to come to the capital for further examination…”

As Sun Shengnan spoke, her expression showed deep concern.

Lu Xia listened and furrowed her brow. She had never heard of such a condition before. She consoled them, saying, “Don’t worry. We know people at both the city hospital and the military hospital. Tomorrow, we’ll take Zhenzhen to see the doctors.
Beijing has some of the best doctors in the country. They’ll definitely be able to diagnose Zhenzhen’s condition.”

Hearing this, Sun Shengnan and her husband felt relieved. “Thank you so much. Without you, we wouldn’t know what to do.”

Lu Xia shook her head and replied, “Sister Shengnan, don’t be so polite. The guest room is ready. You should get some rest tonight, and we’ll go to the hospital early tomorrow. It’s the weekend, and we’ll have time.”

“Okay!”

Afterward, Lu Xia took them to the guest room. Seeing how well it had been prepared, Sun Shengnan was even more moved. However, she didn’t say anything, as the most important thing was to treat Zhenzhen’s illness.

The next day, Lu Xia woke up early. It was then that she met the newly awakened Zhenzhen. Despite Sun Shengnan’s claim that she had lost weight, Zhenzhen still appeared quite plump, almost big enough to fit two Kang Kangs. Lu Xia couldn’t help but wonder how she looked before her weight loss.

It seemed that Sun Shengnan had prepared Zhenzhen for their arrival, as she greeted Lu Xia as “Auntie” with a soft voice and a somewhat subdued spirit, making her appear rather pitiable.

After a simple breakfast, Lu Xia and Jiang Junmo accompanied them to the hospital. They decided to go directly to the military hospital.

The previous evening, they had discussed it and decided that it was best to go to the military hospital, as the diagnosis for Zhenzhen’s condition was not yet certain, and the hospital had more authoritative doctors.

Jiang Junmo had already spoken with Aunt Jiang early that morning, so they didn’t waste any time and went straight to the hospital.

Upon their arrival at the hospital, they sought out Aunt Jiang. She had already heard about the child’s symptoms and introduced them to Dr. Liao, the head of the pediatric department.

Dr. Liao was not a young man, and his stern demeanor was likely influenced by his military background, but he exuded a commanding presence. Sun Shengnan and her husband were grateful to Lu Xia for introducing them to such a professional.

Chapter 682 – Excessive Eating

.

This time, they truly had a lot to thank Aunt Jiang for. Doctors like Dr. Liao, who were of this age, had typically become specialists and rarely dealt with general consultations. After hearing Zhenzhen’s symptoms and inquiring briefly about the child’s dietary habits and other routines, Dr. Liao ordered a comprehensive examination, which took the whole morning. It included blood tests and various other analyses, but the results wouldn’t be available for a couple of days. They left the hospital after the examination.

During the two days of waiting, since Zhenzhen was unwell, they didn’t venture too far from the hospital. On Monday, when they expected the test results to be ready, Lu Xia took a day off from work to accompany them to the military hospital.

As expected of one of the most authoritative hospitals in the country, finally, they had an answer to the child’s problems: juvenile diabetes.

To be honest, Lu Xia was stunned when she heard the diagnosis. She hadn’t expected Zhenzhen to have diabetes. In the current era, diabetes was a relatively rare condition because even though China had undergone reforms and opening up, most families were still struggling to meet basic needs, let alone having an abundance of food. Large amounts of meat and fish couldn’t be consumed daily, making conditions like diabetes and obesity far less prevalent.

While Lu Xia didn’t know the specific causes of diabetes, she was certain that it had something to do with excessive eating. It was only at this moment that she remembered the doctor’s questions about Zhenzhen’s diet.

According to Sun Shengnan, she had never consumed plain water from a young age, only sweetened water. Sun Shengnan and her husband indulged her, reserving all the delicious treats for their daughter. However, too much of a good thing could lead to problems, especially in a child with a delicate constitution, which had now resulted in her illness.

Sun Shengnan and her husband deeply regretted their actions.

Especially when they heard that there is currently no specific medication to treat this disease, Sun Shengnan burst into tears.

Liu Jun also had a regretful expression on his face.

He couldn’t understand why he let his child eat whatever she wanted, thinking it was for her own good, and how she ended up getting sick.

In this era, diabetes was a novel disease, and even though the doctor explained that there were many causes of illness, they still felt that if they had not indulged her, allowing her to eat whatever she wanted, she would not have ended up like this.

Seeing the self-blame in both of their faces, Lu Xia felt worried. After thinking for a moment, she tried to comfort them: “Thinking about this now won’t help. Fortunately, the doctor says it’s not an emergency, and there is still a possibility of recovery through control. So let’s quickly hear what the treatment plan is going forward, shall we?”

Sun Shengnan and Liu Jun quickly calmed down after hearing this.

The doctor continued: “The most important thing now is to control her diet. Do not eat anything with sugar, consume more grains, and pay attention to exercise to boost your immunity. You will have to regularly check your blood sugar at the hospital. You must keep it under control, otherwise it will affect her lifespan!”

Sun Shengnan and Liu Jun nodded quickly in agreement. Since there was no specific medication, the doctor only prescribed some medications for blood sugar control.

After thanking the doctor, they left the hospital.

On the way back, Lu Xia also had mixed feelings. She was aware of diabetes in the future, so she knew about insulin and other treatments. She didn’t expect that insulin was not commonly used in this era. Otherwise, with such effective drugs, they could be more at ease.

But now, they would have to rely on their own control.

It would probably be quite challenging, but there was no other choice.

Fortunately, their trip to Beijing helped them understand the nature of the disease and how to treat it in the future. That gave them some peace of mind.

  1. This is kind of irritating because type 1 diabetes, the kind that usually occurs in childhood, is not from over eating or being fat. A kid in the countryside at that time would just die because they’d not have access to insulin let alone get a timely diagnosis. Heck, kids are still dying all over the world right now. You can’t control type 1 diabetes with diet and exercise alone. You need meds.

    1. I think you have to re-research about DM type II. Being over 40 y.o. isn’t the main risk of getting it. There’s also “having obesity, descendants or family members of diabetic patient, and descendants of certain ethnicities (including being Chinese).” The last two risks have a lot to do with genetic and nutrition intake habit. Nowadays, there’s increase in reports of DM II amongst children (between 0-18 y.o.). I’m not sure the prevalence of DM II in children in your place. But, by 2013 in my place, it’s more than 10% amongst obes children between 5-12 y.o.

  2. @clessley try not to take it to heart too much. I’m not sure why, but CN authors rarely do proper research on diseases, illnesses or injuries. Disabilities are often horribly represented too. It irritates me too but I keep reading anyway 😅😅😅😅

    1. Yeah, I know. I will definitely keep reading. …I honestly prefer the stories where they completely make up a disease instead of getting a real disease completely wrong. I don’t know why medical stuff throws me out of a story when I can suspend my disbelief for secret dimensional spaces with spirit springs and transmigration into books. 😉

  3. Even if you spoil your child, it’s very concerning when the child eats more than the adult. Being really overweight is unhealthy and has many side effects, so I’m surprised they’d let her continue to eat until she’s even bigger than two of Kang Kang put together; even if they didn’t know that being obese is unhealthy, the fact that she was much larger than the average child is something to be concerned about in general. I also feel sorry for the son who was clearly not as favored as the daughter. They need to show equal treatment to both children so they both feel loved and cherished.

    Thanks for the chapter! 😀
