Chapter 263 – Chen Corporation’s Shares

At night, everything quieted down, with occasional sounds of passing cars heard from outside the hospital.

Earlier, Chen Li had already fallen asleep. Wei Chen and Chen Yunlan had been keeping vigil by Chen Li’s side. Chen Yunlan was busy attending to Chen Li, while Wei Chen attempted a few times to convince him to rest, but his offers were persistently declined by Chen Yunlan.

At the moment, Wei Chen sat beside Chen Li, his gaze fixed on Chen Li’s peaceful sleeping face. Chen Li had fallen into a deep slumber, his hands, which were usually placed randomly, were now gently resting on his stomach. It seemed as though this particular gesture was meant to protect the life within his belly.

Chen Yunlan gently pushed the door open and entered. After glancing at Wei Chen, as if having made a decision, he walked up to Wei’s side and lightly patted his shoulder, whispering, “Come out for a moment, I need to talk to you.”

Wei Chen got up, adjusting the bedcovers for Chen Li before following Chen Yunlan outside.

“This is for you.” As soon as they left the room, Chen Yunlan handed Wei Chen a file. Earlier, when he had left the hospital to prepare fish soup for Chen Li, he had also arranged this document.

Wei Chen took the file, opened it, and found a share transfer document inside.

“Is this Chen’s shares?” Wei Chen raised an eyebrow, surprised that Chen Yunlan would give this to him.

“Yes, sign your name. Although it’s not much, consider it as part of the dowry I offer to Xiao Li. These shares have been accumulated by me over the years. Due to the events of the past two decades, I’ve carried a grudge. That’s why I stealthily acquired these shares from small shareholders, preparing for a time when they might be of use.”

However, before today, Chen Yunlan had not considered transferring the shares to Wei Chen. After all, despite his conflict with the Chen family, deep down, he still regarded himself as part of the family. Privately, he didn’t want to contribute to the destruction of the Chen family through the hands of an outsider.

Yet, what occurred today made him realize that the people in the Chen family never truly regarded his son as one of their own. They continued to push his son toward a dead end. Even after knowing about his and Chen Li’s acknowledgment of their relationship, there was no change in their attitude.

If that’s the case, why should he still consider himself a part of the Chen family?

“I’ll accept it for now. Tomorrow, when Li Li wakes up, I’ll have him sign it,” Wei Chen said as he put away the file.

Chen Yunlan looked at Wei Chen in surprise. “Actually, you can sign your own name. I believe these shares will have the greatest significance in your hands.”

Wei shook his head. “This is the debt that the Chen family owes Li Li. Don’t worry, whatever belongs to Li Li, I will retrieve it all.”

Suddenly, Chen Yunlan felt that his previous concerns were all in vain. Even if Wei Chen wasn’t a part of the Chen family, his heart was entirely devoted to Chen Li. He would do anything for Chen Li. Therefore, transferring these shares to Wei Chen was ultimately in aid of his own son.

Chen Yunlan felt reassured in that moment and began to look at Wei Chen with more respect. It was a privilege for Li Li to be with Wei.

“There’s one more thing I need to tell you.”

“Mr. Chen, please go on.”

“You should also know that the Chen Corporation in Shanghai is a subsidiary of the Chen Corporation in Beijing. If Beijing’s Chen family is dissatisfied, they can change the head of Shanghai’s Chen Corporation at any time. When my grandfather established the Chen Corporation, he knew this, so he left himself a way out.
He split forty percent of the shares into three parts secretly. He owned twenty percent himself. Over the years, my father…” At this point, Chen Yunlan paused, clearly reluctant to admit that the person he referred to was his own father, “Chen Shihuai should have had over twenty percent of the shares in his own hands. While the other twenty percent was placed by my grandfather under the names of two of his close friends, one being Du Lixun’s grandfather, and the other being the Zhou family in Shanghai.

This was a contingency plan left by the former head of the Chen family in Shanghai to prevent the Chen family in Beijing from reclaiming control over the Shanghai branch. If in the future the Chen family in Beijing wanted to regain control, Shanghai’s Chen family would still have some shares to counterbalance with.”

“If possible, if you can get the shares from the Du family and the Zhou family, along with what I’ve given you and what you already have, then the Chen Corporation in Shanghai is already in your hands,” continued Chen Yunlan. He believed that Wei Chen couldn’t possibly be without shares of the Chen family in order to counter the family.

When all these shares were combined, Chen Yunlan believed that the share Wei Chen held of Chen Corporation could definitely exceed forty percent, even more than what Chen Shihuai or Beijing’s Chen family held.

Wei Chen pondered for a moment, and though he likely had a calculation in mind, he asked, “Is Chen Yunsheng’s desire for Li Li’s heart due to the ten percent of the shares held by Du Lixun?”

Chen Yunlan nodded, “Yes, initially, Chen Yunsheng married Du Lixun for that ten percent of the shares.”

Wei Chen narrowed his eyes. “Mr. Chen, you can let Chen Yunsheng know that the Du family no longer holds that ten percent of the shares.”

Chen Yunlan widened his eyes in astonishment, looking at Wei Chen, somewhat incredulous.

“Mr. Chen, you should go back and rest. I’ll watch over Li Li,” Wei Chen said.

Chen Yunlan, in the end, didn’t voice out his inner shock. He couldn’t comprehend how and when Wei Chen managed to secure the ten percent of shares from the Du family’s possession. How did he know about the existence of these shares? It was an extremely discreet and hidden contingency plan left by his grandfather. If it hadn’t been for an incidental overheard conversation between his grandfather and Chen Shihuai, Chen Yunlan wouldn’t have known about it.

Nevertheless, this was a good thing. Wei Chen was a resourceful person; only with these abilities could he safeguard the love between him and Xiao Li.

Reflecting on the past, Chen Yunlan shook his head wryly and left the room.

…

Wei Chen returned to the ward. Chen Li was still in the same position, unchanged. Wei Chen walked to Chen Li’s side, gently pressed a kiss on his forehead, softly whispered, “Goodnight,” and then lay down on the nearby small bed.

He knew Chen Yunlan’s perplexity. Why would he know about the ten percent of Chen family shares in the Du family’s possession? It was all because of his past life.

In his previous life, in the last few years, Chen Yunsheng’s ambition gradually became apparent. He no longer wanted to be under the control of Chen Shihuai and began to resist him. His first step was obtaining that ten percent of the shares from Du Lixun.

So, when Wei Chen was reborn five years ago, he set his sights on that ten percent of shares. Now, more than a year had passed, and the ten percent of shares from the Du family had silently transferred to Chen Li’s name.

Over this past year, Wei Chen also acquired Chen Corporation shares from scattered sources and shareholders, collectively surpassing the ten percent mark. The changes in these shares were discreet, making them untraceable even for those who were now investigating. Wei Chen had all these shares registered under Chen Li’s name.

Hence, Wei Chen alone already held over twenty percent of the shares. Additionally, with the eight percent transferred by Chen Yunlan today, it totaled more than thirty percent.

Moreover, tonight, Chen Yunlan provided Wei Chen with crucial information – the Zhou family in Shanghai still held ten percent of the shares. If Wei Chen could secure these, his shares would amount to over forty percent.

Thus, for Wei Chen, the control over the Chen Corporation in Shanghai was practically within his grasp.

Wei Chen tossed and turned on the small bed for a long while. He couldn’t tell when he eventually fell asleep.

Reinhert had returned on his own from a small town in the south because he had sensed the surveillance from the Chen family. The Chen family not only kept him under surveillance but also posed threats, not directly, but through various incidents, leaving Reinhert on edge during this time.

Yesterday, Chen Yunsheng, unable to wait any longer, sent a message directly to Reinhert, threatening him to return. He mentioned that he could bring Chen Li in front of Reinhert and allow Reinhert to end Chen Li’s life, and all past issues would be forgiven.

It was due to this that Reinhert returned.

Upon Reinhert’s arrival at the train station, Chen Yunsheng and Chen Qing were there to meet him, accompanied by several others, leaving Reinhert with no chance of escaping.

However, as soon as Chen Yunsheng and Chen Qing brought Reinhert to the hospital, the police arrived and arrested Reinhert on charges of intentional homicide. The leading officer even thanked Chen Yunsheng for bringing in this fugitive, infuriating Chen Yunsheng to the point where he almost spat out blood.

Reinhert’s arrest shattered the hopes that Chen Yunsheng and Chen Qing had desperately held onto. Chen Yunsheng immediately called Chen Yunqi, asking him to get Reinhert released.

Upon hearing of Reinhert’s arrest, Chen Yunqi furrowed his brow. He immediately sensed something fishy and, after ending the call with Chen Yunsheng, promptly phoned the Minister of Public Security, requesting Reinhert’s release.

Chen Yunqi was well aware of what Reinhert held in his possession. If Reinhert were to divulge certain matters, the Chen family would undoubtedly suffer losses.

As soon as Chen Yunqi made that call, Jiang Ye got wind of it. Jiang Ye couldn’t help but think, “Sure enough, there was some sort of cooperation between the Chen family and Reinhert.”

This explained the times when surveillance of Reinhert didn’t yield any information for a while in recent times.

It seems that Reinhert’s visit to that southern small town wasn’t to evade Chen Yunsheng, nor was it a casual trip to the southern town. Indeed, Reinhert used Chen Yunsheng as an excuse to disguise the true purpose of his visit to a specific location in the south.

After Jiang Ye realized these points, he made several phone calls and thoroughly briefed Sheng Guoqi on the matter.

Jiang Ye had a premonition that persisting with Reinhert’s apprehension, although it might not uproot the Chen family entirely, would significantly damage the family’s strength.

Meanwhile, completely oblivious to the chain of reactions his call triggered, Chen Yunsheng was feeling exasperated by Du Lixun’s constant nagging. He had thought that Reinhert’s return would resolve all the current difficulties. However, he never anticipated that Reinhert would be apprehended as soon as he returned.

To exacerbate the situation, at that very moment, Chen Yu fell back into a coma. The ECG’s readings gradually stabilized, prompting doctors to start resuscitation efforts once again, which were ongoing.

“Is this the solution you proposed, Chen Yunsheng?” Du Lixun, full of anxiety, stood outside the resuscitation room. She felt as though there was a fire burning inside her upon seeing Chen Yunsheng. “What about the heart? Chen Li’s heart? Didn’t you claim that we could get it once Reinhert returned? Where is it now?”

“Enough!” Chen Yunsheng, unable to endure further, intervened, “I’m also trying to find a way, but Chen Li is being heavily protected. My people haven’t had a chance to get close. What can I do?” He was perplexed as to why the situation, which had seemed foolproof, had taken such a turn. Where did things go wrong?

Du Lixun met Chen Yunsheng’s intense gaze and remained silent, just staring at the closed door of the resuscitation room, tears streaming uncontrollably.

Chen Qing stood in a corner, observing the tightly shut door of the resuscitation room without saying a word.

For some reason, he had a strong premonition that something was about to happen, an intense feeling that was causing him great discomfort, making even his thoughts somewhat muddled.

What was going to happen, exactly?

The resuscitation efforts lasted for three hours, concluding only after darkness engulfed the skies. The lights in the resuscitation room were finally turned off.

Chen Yu was brought back from the brink once more, but now was shifted to the intensive care unit. Whether she would survive now depended on her ability to hold on for the next seventy-two hours.
