Chapter 327 – Wishing to Remarry
Qiuqiu thought Little Biscuit was coming to play with him, so he grinned and rubbed his face against Little Biscuit’s face. At that moment, Qiuqiu was blowing spit bubbles, and when he rubbed against Little Biscuit, he left a face full of drool.
Little Biscuit teasingly remarked, “Big Qiuqiu, you’re so dirty.” It was a playful tone without a hint of disdain.
Qiuqiu, on the other hand, thought Little Biscuit was praising him and giggled in response.
The two little ones quickly rolled into a ball on the carpet, chatting away, giggling and laughing without a care.
Cookie invited Chen Li to sit down, knowing Chen Li liked watching cartoons, so he switched to the children’s channel.
Interestingly, Chen Li and Cookie were cousins. Now, sitting together, if one observed closely, there was a hint of resemblance between their facial features.
They didn’t converse much, just focused on watching the cartoon. The simple storyline brought out a different kind of joy.
The room was filled with a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere. Downstairs in the living room, amidst the tranquility and contentment, there were hidden undercurrents.
Old Master Qu intended to introduce Wei Chen to these influential figures, and Wei Chen, respecting Old Master Qu’s wishes, remained by his side.
Regardless of who came up and whatever was said, Wei Chen handled everything adeptly. Even though his face remained expressionless, the esteemed figures didn’t feel the slightest discomfort dealing with him.
After a few exchanges, both hosts and guests seemed content.
While Old Master Qu was engaged in conversation with others, Chen Yunqi approached Wei Chen with a smile. “Mr. Wei, you’ve done a great job this time. Congratulations.”
“Mr. Chen, you’re too kind,” Wei Chen replied expressionlessly. “I just did what I had to do.”
Chen Yunqi smiled meaningfully. “I hope, Mr. Wei, that you’ll only do what you should. Don’t meddle in affairs beyond your reach. Not every time will be as fortunate as this one.”
“Mr. Chen, is that a warning?” Wei Chen’s tone was nonchalant.
“Mr. Wei, you can take it as a well-intentioned reminder,” Chen Yunqi replied.
“Then, thank you for your reminder, Mr. Chen,” Wei Chen responded calmly.
Chen Yunqi stopped talking and turned to converse with another influential figure, diverting his gaze away from Wei Chen.
When Chen Yunqi came over to talk to Wei Chen, Wei Hua took notice. He wasn’t entirely aware of what precisely happened within the Changfeng Group, but he had an inkling that Wei Chen had a hand in it. Chen Yunqi’s approach now clearly hinted at something unpleasant.
“Are you okay?” Wei Hua walked up to Wei Chen, asking with concern.
Wei Chen shook his head. “I’m fine.”
Wei Hua placed his hand on Wei Chen’s shoulder and patted gently. “Take care.”
Previously, Wei Hua didn’t have a deep understanding of the Chen family, but now things were different. He might not have a complete grasp of who the Chens were or the extent of their power, but he had learned quite a bit. Wei Chen had officially severed ties with the Chen family, and in the future, endless dangers awaited him.
“You too.”
Amidst this vortex, how many members of the Wei family could safeguard themselves?
After a brief exchange between the brothers, they each went to attend to the guests.
It was almost noon when the dignitaries who had come to pay New Year’s respects started to leave. The once lively Sheng household finally quietened down.
Jiang Ye arrived at this time. After exchanging greetings with Grandfather Qu and Sheng Jiaqi, he pulled Wei Chen aside to discuss work matters. He seemed completely engrossed, a true workaholic.
However, Wei Chen knew why Jiang Ye was so fervently involved in work at this moment. Lan Xiping had gone home a few days ago for the Spring Festival. Now that Jiang Ye was alone, he naturally sought things to do to pass the time and alleviate his longing.
Out of consideration for the lonely Jiang Ye, Wei Chen discussed work for about an hour until Wei Hua came over to call them for lunch, ending their conversation.
Grandfather Qu genuinely adored Big Qiuqiu. Even during mealtime, he held onto Big Qiuqiu. However, Big Qiuqiu was full of energy at that moment. Sitting in Grandfather Qu’s arms, he couldn’t sit still, fidgeting and kicking. He eyed the adults’ food, wanting some for himself. Opening his mouth wide, he made some noises.
But the dishes on the table were not suitable for his age. No matter how he pleaded, no one gave him anything. Initially, it was fine, but as time passed, Big Qiuqiu became a bit disgruntled, pouting and looking somewhat forlorn.
Grandfather Qu couldn’t bear to see this and brought over a pair of chopsticks, dipped them lightly in the soup, and then touched them to Big Qiuqiu’s lips. Big Qiuqiu couldn’t taste anything, but just having what the adults were having satisfied him. He smacked his lips and laughed happily.
Wei Chen and Chen Li hadn’t planned to stay overnight, but seeing how much Grandfather Qu loved Big Qiuqiu, after Grandfather Qu held him during lunch, they couldn’t bring themselves to leave. They ended up staying at the Sheng household for the night.
Big Qiuqiu would recognize people when he went to bed at night. Without Wei Chen or Chen Li around, he wouldn’t sleep. Around eight o’clock, Wei Chen went to Grandfather Qu’s room and brought Big Qiuqiu back.
Grandfather Qu was getting older and naturally had less energy. He usually retired by eight in the evening, but because of Big Qiuqiu, it was over half an hour later today.
Wei Chen, Chen Li, and Big Qiuqiu stayed at the Sheng household for two days until they returned home on the morning of the third day of the Lunar New Year. They were heading home on the third day of the Lunar New Year; the true essence of the festival hadn’t entirely passed yet.
That morning, when Wei Chen and Chen Li hadn’t returned yet, Fang Yun and a few newly acquainted wealthy women in the neighborhood went out. Meanwhile, Chen Yunlan had flown to the United States yesterday to give a lecture at a prestigious art school, a scheduled commitment from before the New Year that couldn’t be canceled, so he was on a business trip before the New Year was officially over.
At this moment, only Wei Wei was left at home. He was already about eleven or twelve years old, so being alone at home wasn’t an issue. But on this particular day, a guest arrived unexpectedly.
Of course, without permission, considering the security in this neighborhood, this guest couldn’t enter.
Early in the morning, Wei Wei was reading on the balcony when the security booth called in.
Wei Wei set down his book and picked up the phone. “Hello.”
“Mr. Wei, Happy Chinese New Year. There’s a Mr. Wei at the gate who says he’s your father. Can I let him in?” The security guard hadn’t paid much attention and didn’t realize a child had answered the phone.
The screen by the door had accurately projected the appearance of the visiting Mr. Wei, indeed Wei Zhenxiong.
This left Wei Wei momentarily stunned. It seemed like it had been a long time since he’d seen his father, yet he didn’t feel any emotional longing.
The guard didn’t hear Wei Wei’s response and called out again, “Mr. Wei?”
Wei Wei was lost in thought. “There are no adults at home.” He didn’t want to see Wei Zhenxiong; the events of that time still cast a shadow over his heart.
The security guard finally realized a child had answered the phone, so he took it more seriously. After hanging up, he didn’t allow Wei Zhenxiong inside. “I’m sorry, sir. The family you’re looking for isn’t at home,” the guard said.
Wei Zhenxiong had already mentally prepared himself for rejection, but being turned away still didn’t sit well with him. However, he couldn’t let go of his pride and argue with the security guard.
As he turned to leave, a car approached, and the partially lowered window allowed him to see the person inside clearly—it was Wei Chen.
“Achen!” Wei Zhenxiong called out immediately.
Wei Chen heard him and turned to look. He saw Wei Zhenxiong but showed no emotion on his face. He nodded at the security guard. “Let him in.”
With Wei Chen’s permission, the security guard allowed Wei Zhenxiong inside. He couldn’t help but wonder, were they father and son? Why did they seem even less familiar than strangers?
The security guard pondered briefly but didn’t probe further. After all, this involved the homeowner’s privacy, and he shouldn’t intrude.
Wei Zhenxiong arrived at the door almost at the same time as Wei Chen.
Seeing Qiuqiu in Chen Li’s arms, Wei Zhenxiong raised an eyebrow in surprise. The child looked like a spitting image of Chen Li. Was this a surrogate? Would Wei Chen actually agree to that?
Wei Chen took out his keys and opened the door, gesturing for Wei Zhenxiong to come in. “Come in.” His tone lacked emotion.
Inside, Wei Wei heard the noise and quickly walked to the door. “Brother, you’re back…” His words trailed off when he saw Wei Zhenxiong standing there.
After a moment of shock, Wei Wei’s face hardened, and he turned, heading to the living room.
Wei Zhenxiong, noticing Wei Wei’s evident change in behavior, stepped in and chastised him, “What’s this? Haven’t seen you for so long, and you lack even basic manners?”
Wei Wei seemingly ignored him, picked up the book he had been reading, lowered his head, and remained silent.
Wei Chen and Chen Li came in, addressing Wei Wei, “Wei Wei, you and Brother Chen Li go upstairs.”
Wei Wei nodded reluctantly. “Okay.”
Chen Li glanced at Wei Chen, receiving a nod in return. He then carried Qiuqiu, held Wei Wei’s hand, and went upstairs.
Wei Zhenxiong was still unhappy. “What kind of manners has Fang Yun taught this child?”
“If Father came today to discuss Wei Wei’s education with me, then please leave,” Wei Chen responded coldly without inviting Wei Zhenxiong to sit. He went to the kitchen, poured a glass of water, and upon hearing Wei Zhenxiong’s accusations, responded icily.
“Are you really not going back to the Wei family?” Wei Zhenxiong asked with a furrowed brow, ignoring Wei Chen’s words.
“No time.” Wei Chen dismissed the conversation with those three words.
Wei Zhenxiong, naturally displeased, was about to rebuke but recalled his purpose for coming. “I’ve decided to remarry your mother. We’re not young anymore and can’t afford to be tossed around. Help me talk to your mother,” Wei Zhenxiong stated, assuming it was only reasonable.
Wei Chen just stared at Wei Zhenxiong without replying.
“What do you mean by that look? Do you want your mother to live out her old age alone?” Wei Zhenxiong blustered, feeling uneasy under Wei Chen’s gaze.
