Chapter 388 – Chunsheng’s Methods

Xie Chunsheng and Chen Yunlan’s wedding was in full swing with preparations. However, before their wedding, they were greeted with a grand birthday banquet for a prominent figure.

Initially not on the guest list, Xie Chunsheng found himself included due to being taken in as a godson by Old Master Qu last month. Leveraging this relationship, he had an encounter with this prominent figure.

Unexpectedly, the two hit it off immediately, becoming kindred spirits. Consequently, a gilded birthday banquet invitation found its way into Xie Chunsheng’s hands.

Wei Chen represented Old Master Qu, while Xie Chunsheng attended under his own name. After deliberation, they decided to attend the banquet together.

Although the host of the banquet held a prestigious position, the event was rather simple. If it weren’t an auspicious “round-number” day, the celebrant, Mr. Zheng, wouldn’t have hosted it.

Despite it being Mr. Zheng’s birthday celebration, he had appeared on news broadcasts yesterday, engaged in diplomatic visits to other countries.

Upon Wei Chen and Xie Chunsheng’s arrival at the banquet venue, they underwent multiple security checks before being allowed in, ensuring they carried no hazardous items.

Of course, the attendees at this banquet had tasks far from ordinary, making these security measures absolutely necessary.

Wei Chen even heard the distant sound of helicopters overhead; security was so tight that no one uninvited could infiltrate. Those inside couldn’t enter without special permission either.

Inside the banquet hall, numerous guests had already arrived. When they caught sight of Wei Chen and Xie Chunsheng, discussions about their identities naturally began.

Most people, upon learning they were associated with Old Master Qu, didn’t display any particular reactions. After all, who received invitations to this banquet if not influential figures?

If other banquets were considered arenas for fame and fortune, this birthday celebration was a refreshing change. While not devoid of potential business exchanges, the primary purpose remained pure: to congratulate Mr. Zheng.

Wei Chen and Xie Chunsheng entering together drew the attention of some attendees. For instance, the head of the Chen family and his two sons, Chen Shijing and Chen Shixian.

This was not the scenario they hoped for. Chen Shijing even furrowed his brow, “Why is Wei Chen here with Xie Chunsheng?”

Xie Chunsheng was a figure not to be trifled with, and if he remained in proximity to Wei Chen throughout, their plans for the day might be jeopardized.

Chen Shixian furrowed his brow as well, not anticipating this turn of events. However, he remained composed and calmly patted his younger brother’s shoulder, saying, “Let’s observe quietly for now.”

“Okay.” Chen Shijing nodded, realizing this was the only course of action available now.

The banquet commenced promptly. Mr. Zheng, dressed in traditional Tang clothing, appeared radiant. After exchanging pleasantries with numerous well-wishers, when Xie Chunsheng and Wei Chen approached, Mr. Zheng engaged in an extended conversation with Xie Chunsheng.

Mr. Zheng’s attitude raised suspicions among some guests—did Xie Chunsheng have a special place in Mr. Zheng’s heart?

For Wei Chen, it was his first encounter with Mr. Zheng, a legendary figure occupying the highest position in China. Despite this, Mr. Zheng showed no hint of arrogance, maintaining an unassuming demeanor. His attitude, neither servile nor haughty, made Mr. Zheng nod repeatedly; it was no wonder his mentor had sent him.

“I’ve heard from the Sheng family that your contributions played a significant role in those operations,” Mr. Zheng inquired, referring to the nation’s anti-drug operations.

Wei Chen neither denied nor boasted about his contributions, remaining composed and replied, “I merely did what I had to do.”

Mr. Zheng nodded and turned to speak with others. He had indeed heard about this young man’s capabilities.

However, what caught Mr. Zheng’s attention wasn’t just Wei Chen’s abilities but his attitude—unassuming, humble about achievements, and focused on doing what was necessary. How many could embody these simple principles?

The young individuals approved by his mentor were truly impressive. It was a pity that in the business world; if they ventured into politics, they would undoubtedly be promising talents with unlimited futures given a little nurturing.

For now, though, the current situation sufficed. His mentor could retire peacefully because there were no aspiring politicians around. No baggage in, no baggage out—this made his mentor’s retreat all the more relaxed.

The banquet, as per usual, followed a predictable pattern, but by the time the whole proceedings concluded, it was already dark outside. Mr. Zheng was departing for another country the following afternoon.

Of course, the Chen family members weren’t foolish enough to act during Mr. Zheng’s banquet. Their plan was to strike while Wei Chen was on his way back after the event.

However, when those preparing to abduct Wei Chen saw him and Xie Chunsheng getting into the same car, they stared blankly, uncertain about their next move.

“Young Master Chen, Wei Chen left with Xie Chunsheng,” reported one of Chen Yunqi’s men.

Chen Yunqi, who had been awaiting news, didn’t anticipate receiving this particular update. His brows furrowed immediately. “Who did you say he left with?”

“Xie Chunsheng.”

“Damn it!” Chen Yunqi couldn’t help but swear.

How did Wei Chen end up together with Xie Chunsheng? Weren’t they supposed to be unrelated? Even if Xie Chunsheng was taken in as a godson by Old Master Qu, they shouldn’t have any close association.

Chen Yunqi’s mind raced, and before long, Wei Chen and Xie Chunsheng’s car had driven far away. The person on the phone urged for a decision.

Chen Yunqi gritted his teeth and said, “Follow them, but don’t act yet. Let them make the first move.”

Wei Chen and Jiang Ye had cut off their source of income and that of others, and those people had long wanted to get rid of Wei Chen. Now, they were all waiting to seize Wei Chen’s life. Since Xie Chunsheng was present, he wouldn’t act himself but would let others take care of Wei Chen.

Even if Xie Chunsheng eventually sought revenge, it wouldn’t implicate the Chen family.

The instructed individuals discreetly followed Chen Yunqi’s command.

Inside Wei Chen and Xie Chunsheng’s car:

“Some people are tracking us, and there are several groups,” Xie Chunsheng said. His perception was remarkably acute; a few glances through the rearview mirror told him how many cars were tailing them.

“Is that so?” Wei Chen wasn’t surprised at all. The Chen family had finally lost patience. Xie Chunsheng, seeing Wei Chen’s lack of astonishment, raised an eyebrow and asked, “So, your decision to attend the banquet with me today was deliberate?”

“Yeah,” Wei Chen admitted openly. “I’m just an honest businessman. I had to borrow my father-in-law’s reputation to deal with these petty people.”

“An honest businessman?” Xie Chunsheng nearly laughed. Wei Chen might be a businessman, but honest? Perhaps Wei Chen had some misunderstanding about the term “honest.”

However, Xie Chunsheng didn’t refute Wei Chen’s statement about using his name to confront these petty individuals, implicitly accepting Wei Chen’s actions.

Xie Chunsheng admired this young man who had rescued his son from the darkness. Moreover, Wei Chen was Chen Li’s entire world. Although Xie Chunsheng was highly jealous of this fact, it was an undeniable reality. Xie Chunsheng wouldn’t allow any harm to come to Chen Li’s entire world. Even if Wei Chen didn’t act this way today, Xie Chunsheng would still protect Wei Chen well.

“Since you know it’s all the doing of the Chen family, why not eradicate them all?” Xie Chunsheng asked.

Wei Chen said, “It’s not the right time yet. Behind the Chen family, there’s a bigger fish. Only with the Chen family as bait can we lure that big fish out.”

The Chen family was just a part of an international dr*g trafficking organization in China. Since matters had reached this point, Wei Chen had discussed with Jiang Ye about using the Chen family as bait to expose the bigger force behind them. That’s why the Chen family could remain unscathed for now.

Hearing this, Xie Chunsheng raised an eyebrow. “For this reason, you’re leaving the Chen family’s threat unattended?” He admired these two young individuals, but putting their lives in danger this way was something he couldn’t fully agree with.

“Don’t worry, it won’t be long before the Chen family withdraws their claws.”

“And how do you mean that?” Xie Chunsheng was puzzled.

“From what I know, the Chen family has shifted from trafficking dr*gs to producing them. Over the past few years, Jiang Ye and I have disrupted too many of their routes. Now they’re in a transitional phase and can’t be too arrogant, especially since there are higher-ups watching them,” Wei Chen explained.

For fishing with bait, there always had to be a line pulling it. The Chen family would soon realize they were being watched. This would force them to restrain their actions even if they didn’t want to.

“Hmm,” Xie Chunsheng couldn’t help but applaud Wei Chen and Jiang Ye’s scheme. It was a series of calculated moves, no wonder Jiang Ye dared to go abroad. Probably, Jiang Ye had made preparations abroad.

Quietly, this was the so-called “honest businessman” Wei Chen had referred to himself as. He certainly had a significantly different understanding of honesty.

“Uncle Xie, there’s one more thing I need your help with,” Wei Chen said.

Although Xie Chunsheng and Chen Yunlan had already obtained their marriage certificate, Wei Chen couldn’t bring himself to address Xie Chunsheng differently.

“Go ahead,” Xie Chunsheng didn’t mind how Wei Chen addressed him.

“I know you have some influence in the US. If possible, lend some support to Jiang Ye.” Wei Chen can’t do much for him in the US, but he’s doing his best by using the connections he has. “Whatever help you can offer, it’ll be appreciated.”

Without hesitation, Xie Chunsheng replied, “No problem.” This matter was merely a small favor for Xie Chunsheng.

“Thank you.”

“If you want to thank me, just treat Xiao Li better.”

They had missed too many years with Chen Li. Even if they put in all their effort now, there was only so much Chen Li could accept. So, Xie Chunsheng hoped Wei Chen would cherish Chen Li, provide the best for him, as that was what Chen Li could truly accept without reservations.

“Even if you didn’t mention it, I’d want to present the best things in this world to Li Li.” Speaking of Chen Li, Wei Chen’s expression softened, devoid of the calculating demeanor he had moments ago.

He never schemed when it came to Chen Li. The Wei Chen known to Chen Li was the most genuine and unmasked version of himself.

Xie Chunsheng had absolute faith in this aspect. This young man truly regarded his son as his world.

That was great, truly great.

Xie Chunsheng smiled and said, “You can relax now. My people have already taken care of those following you.”

Unbeknownst to them, the car had arrived at the entrance of Wei Chen’s residential area.

“Thank you, Uncle Xie,” Wei Chen thanked him before getting off and leaving.

As Xie Chunsheng watched Wei Chen’s departing figure, he felt a wave of emotions rise within him.

The young people nowadays were truly outstanding. Wei Chen was like this, and so was Jiang Ye, who ventured alone to the United States.

Wei Chen hadn’t mentioned one thing to him just now, but after this incident, the Chen family would probably have a rough time for a while.

Undoubtedly, the attempt to hunt down Wei Chen was initiated by the Chen family along with a few other forces. Now, his people had dealt with those forces’ members, leaving only the Chen family’s people. What would these forces think? Would they suspect the Chen family’s intentions?

The anger of these forces would naturally vent on the Chen family. With this, how could the Chen family have peace in the near future?

Perhaps Wei Chen’s “thank you” as he got off the car encompassed this underlying message. In that case, Xie Chunsheng accepted it without any mental burden.
