Chapter 158 – Exchange

After Aunt Wen finished speaking, she immediately bent down and started searching.

The sky was quite dark, and Aunt Wen bent her waist deeply, searching carefully. Wen Yulan also pretended to search, quietly moving toward the stove where Aunt Wen placed the food.

She saw several dishes at a glance, each with two servings. She didn’t know which ones were drugged, but it didn’t matter. Swapping the positions of identical dishes would suffice.

While Aunt Wen was facing away, searching on the ground, Wen Yulan quickly swapped the identical dishes and then moved away swiftly.

She then took out the jade from her pocket, feigning surprise, “Oh, I found it.”

“What?” Aunt Wen immediately turned around, even in the dim light, she could see the shiny jade in Wen Yulan’s hand.

The emerald-colored jade was very translucent, clearly valuable at first glance.

Aunt Wen gritted her teeth inwardly, cursing why she let this damn girl find it. ‘If only I had found it, I could have quietly slipped it into my pocket.’

She watched helplessly as Wen Yulan once again hung the jade around her neck.

Wait…

Aunt Wen suddenly realized that later, after this girl ate her food, she would be dr*gged.

When she gave her to the Cui family, she could easily take the jade off this girl’s neck. Then it would be hers.

Yes, that’s it.

Let this girl keep it for a while longer.

If Xu Jinning were here right now, she would know that in the plot she had read, Aunt Wen did indeed take the jade.

She kept it as a collection, and did not sell it.

Until decades later, when she finally sold it, she realized it was top-grade Imperial Green Jade, fetching an astronomical price.

This also made Aunt Wen suddenly rich overnight.

But nobody knew that the jade was stolen by Aunt Wen.

And the true owner of that jade, Wen Yulan, had long since passed away.

This is another part of the book where morals are askew.

Someone schemed against others, indirectly causing their death, and then stole their belongings to become wealthy. Not only did they get rich, but they also lived well. How could this not anger people?

“Auntie, do you really not need me to help you take the dishes out?” Wen Yulan reached out to take the dishes.

Aunt Wen immediately walked over and stopped Wen Yulan’s hand, saying, “No need, really, I can do it myself. Yulan, how about you help with the bowls and chopsticks?”

“Oh, that’s fine too.”

Aunt Wen naturally couldn’t let Wen Yulan touch these dishes. She knew which ones were drugged and how to arrange them. She couldn’t afford any mistakes. It wouldn’t be good if her own family ate the drugged food.

Seeing Wen Yulan obediently fetching the bowls and chopsticks, Aunt Wen was satisfied.

Soon, the dishes were on the table, and they all sat down.

Wen Yulan looked at only Uncle Wen, Aunt Wen, and Wen Huihui in front of her and couldn’t help but ask, “Where are Er Ya, San Ya, and Tie Dan? Aren’t they coming to eat with us?”

“Oh, they’re kids, still young. When they get to the table later, they’ll make a mess, so I’ll let them eat in the small house.”

“Don’t worry, I’ve served their meals separately.”

In fact, Aunt Wen was worried that the younger ones might eat the drugged food. Only the three of them knew about the plan against Wen Yulan. The younger ones were too small; if they were told, Aunt Wen feared they wouldn’t hide it well and might reveal something in front of Wen Yulan.

“I see, alright then,” Wen Yulan replied, going along with her words.

“Yes, yes, that’s right. Well, the dishes are on the table, let’s eat.”

“Yulan, don’t be shy, eat more, especially this bacon, it’s delicious.”

“Okay.”

Seeing Wen Yulan take some bacon to eat, Aunt Wen smiled, and Wen Huihui also felt excited.

As for Uncle Wen, he glanced up, then lowered his head to eat his food as if none of it concerned him.

Wen Yulan discreetly observed their behavior and expressions.

Regarding Uncle Wen, Wen Yulan felt he was the most formidable person.

He was quiet and seemed honest, but in reality, he knew everything. As the pillar of the family, he also enjoyed the benefits of Aunt Wen’s misdeeds.

But he never said anything.

For instance, when Wen Yulan was still living in this household, she endured Aunt Wen’s torment, and Uncle Wen naturally saw it too, but he ignored it.

It was as if as long as he himself was doing well, everything was fine.

In a way, Uncle Wen was the one who kept his hands clean but reaped the rewards.

Aunt Wen wouldn’t forget to share any good fortune or good things with him.

She wouldn’t keep anything hidden from him either.

He seemed to never express his opinions, but he silently approved and cooperated.

He, in fact, was the seemingly innocent but most selfish and self-interested person.

“Uncle, have some more,” Wen Yulan smiled as she picked up a piece of bacon for Uncle Wen.

“No, no…” he said, declining.

Before he could finish refusing, the bacon was already in Uncle Wen’s bowl.

Uncle Wen glanced at Wen Yulan, and she smiled back at him.

“I can handle it myself; make sure you eat enough,” Uncle Wen said after a pause.

“Alright, then,” Wen Yulan replied.

After that, Wen Yulan didn’t pick food for anyone else, which made Aunt Wen and Wen Huihui secretly relieved.

Wen Yulan, with a sidelong glance, noticed that Uncle Wen, who continued eating, didn’t touch the piece of bacon. He didn’t even touch the rice next to the bacon.

She smirked inwardly.

Aunt Wen, mostly focused on Wen Yulan, felt satisfied seeing her only eating what was in front of her.

She also felt clever because she remembered that Wen Yulan used to only dare to pick food from in front of her during meals.

However…

Aunt Wen glanced at Wen Huihui beside her.

This damn girl kept picking at the meat, acting like a starving ghost reborn.

She couldn’t eat too much meat; she had to leave some for her son.

Aunt Wen almost couldn’t resist scolding Wen Huihui, wanting her to stop picking at the meat.

But Wen Yulan was here, and she remembered their plan.

Aunt Wen temporarily suppressed her temper, but she glanced at her with an unpleasant expression.

Wen Huihui naturally noticed her mother’s gaze.

But so what?

She finally had a chance to eat meat, so of course, she wanted to eat more.

However, she thought, she would wait a bit longer. Once she married Xu Xiangdong, the Xu family’s meals would certainly be good, and she wouldn’t miss this bit of bacon then.

Wen Huihui was determined to marry Xu Xiangdong.

As long as this plan succeeded, and Wen Yulan was ruined, unable to return from the deep mountains, Xu Xiangdong wouldn’t be able to marry Wen Yulan.

And she, as Wen Yulan’s cousin, would naturally marry Xu Xiangdong in her place, which was only fair.

However…

Wen Huihui chewed on the meat in her mouth, muttering to herself: Why hasn’t Wen Yulan fainted yet? Could it be that she hasn’t eaten enough?

  1. Whew, what a family and this Uncle Wen! He’s blood-related WY, but actively schemes against her. He’s just a coward and he deserve the misfortune coming his way.

  2. It seems predictable, but I’m sure it’s Wen Huihui who is eating the drugged meal. Seeing their plan fail, they’ll probably just send her in place of Wen Yulan because they don’t care about their daughters as long as the son is well-provided for in the end. Although Wen Huihui is a vicious person who deserves a terrible end, I still wouldn’t wish such a horrible outcome as a shared wife and abusive husbands to anyone. I’m hoping she doesn’t get such an outcome, but if not that ending, then I don’t know what kind of terrible ending she should get that’s sufficient as a punishment for her actions and vicious nature.

    Thanks for the chapter! 😀
