Chapter 161 โ€“ A Glimmer of Hope Snapped by Parents

“Are we going to the Cui family and bring back Huihui?” Aunt Wen hesitated for a moment and asked.

Uncle Wen remained silent for a while before responding, “We’re not going.”

“Not going? But what about the Cui family…”

Aunt Wen knew what would happen to Wen Huihui if she fell into the hands of the Cui family.

Of course, Uncle Wen knew as well.

He asked Aunt Wen, “You took 300 yuan from the Cui family, right?”

“Yes.”

“Since you took the money, you have to deliver. If you bring Huihui back, do you plan to return the money to the Cui family?”

“That’s not possible!” Aunt Wen said without hesitation.

“If you don’t want to return it, then you have to deliver!”

Uncle Wen’s implication was that if Wen Yulan couldn’t be delivered, then they could only deliver Wen Huihui.

“If we keep asking for money and don’t deliver, we’ll only provoke the Cui family.” It was said that the Cui family’s ancestors were bandits.

“So, what do we do now?” Aunt Wen suddenly had no idea.

They couldn’t possibly exchange Wen Yulan, right? But Wen Yulan had already seen through their plan; she was obviously cunning and would be on guard against them now, so she wouldn’t fall for their tricks again.

Uncle Wen looked ahead for a while and then said softly, “Since Huihui has already been taken by the Cui family, what’s done is done. Let’s consider it as Huihui getting married.”

Aunt Wen was stunned and fell silent, not saying anything.

After a while, she reluctantly agreed, “It can only be this way. If we blame anyone, it’s Huihui’s unfortunate fate.”

In fact, Aunt Wen was somewhat unwilling.

After all, her plan was to send Wen Yulan to the Cui family in exchange for the 300 yuan, while she intended to marry Wen Huihui to Xu Xiangdong. This way, she would have a capable son-in-law to support her son in the future, and she could also receive Wen Huihui’s dowry.

But now, things had turned out like this.

She was missing a dowry, and the people from the Cui family definitely wouldn’t be able to help her son.

Aunt Wen was frustrated and hesitant about this.

As for Wen Huihui being taken into the Cui family and possibly being treated as a sh*red wife or even being unable to leave the deep mountains for the rest of her life, Aunt Wen, like her husband, only sighed about how unfortunate Wen Huihui’s fate was, and that was it.

In fact, if Aunt Wen and her husband had been willing to go and exchange Wen Huihui with money that night, there was a good chance they could have brought her back. At that time, Wen Huihui hadn’t yet suffered from the cruelty of the Cui brothers.

But they gave up.

They, who were the hopes of Wen Huihui, never once thought of going to save her.

And so, this whole situation, which Wen Huihui had been patiently waiting for at the Cui family’s place for several days, only made her realize in the end that her parents wouldn’t come to rescue her.

She had to accept the fact that she would have to stay at the Cui family’s place in the future.

At that time, Wen Huihui was filled with hatred, not just towards Wen Yulan, but also towards her parents and the entire Cui family. This resentment and humiliation twisted her, leading her to do crazy things later on.

Of course, these are all stories for later.

Meanwhile, Aunt Wen quickly realized that her money was gone.

Aunt Wen was someone who used to hide money. She had hidden money in several places at home, but the place where she had hidden the most, including the 300 yuan, was now empty.

“It must have been that girl, Wen Yulan, who stole it,” Aunt Wen’s expression was somewhat frantic. “No, I have to go find her!”

“Stop!” Uncle Wen, who had just taken a few steps forward, quickly rebuked her. “Don’t go.”

“Why not? That damn girl definitely took my money. That’s over four hundred yuan!” Apart from the three hundred from the Cui family, there was over a hundred yuan that Aunt Wen had saved herself.

As for the other places, they only had a few yuan, maybe not even adding up to a hundred altogether.

Uncle Wen turned to her. “You’re going to ask her? Will she admit it?”

“Then should I search?” Aunt Wen asked.

“You’re going to search? Will she let you? Can you guarantee you’ll find anything?”

“Then should I call the police? Yes, call the police. Once the police are involved, they will definitely help me search, and then that damn girl will be sent to prison!” The more Aunt Wen thought about it, the more she liked the idea of calling the police.

Uncle Wen chuckled coldly. “But if the police ask you where this money came from, what will you say? Will you spill the beans about the plan against Yulan?”

“And since that girl took the money, she definitely won’t keep it at home. Even if the police come, they won’t find anything.”

“Also, don’t forget. Wen Yulan and Xu Xiangdong are engaged.”

“Right now, the chief of the Anren County Public Security Bureau is Xu Xiangdong’s sister’s godfather. They have a family relationship. Tell me, will the police help you or help Wen Yulan?”

Aunt Wen was dumbfounded.

Indeed, her husband’s words made sense.

“Then, am I just giving my money away to that girl for nothing?”

Uncle Wen’s eyes were dark and heavy, and after a while, he said, “You’ll just have to accept your bad luck!”

With those words, Aunt Wen slumped to the ground instantly.

Wasn’t he worried about the four hundred yuan? Of course, he was naturally worried.

But as he analyzed, the money was simply gone, and they could only accept their bad luck.

However, he hadn’t expected that he, Wen Laoโ€™er, who had schemed against others his whole life, would be outsmarted by Wen Yulan, such a young girl.

Recalling the memories of his thin niece, he could only say that Wen Yulan had changed and grown up.

She had grown into someone he couldn’t afford to provoke now.

When Wen Yulan married Xu Xiangdong, he would be even less able to provoke her.

Uncle Wen felt frustrated, but there was nothing he could do.

“Let’s just let this matter pass. Huihui has been married off. In the future, don’t provoke Yulan anymore.”

Aunt Wen, sitting on the ground, burst into sobbing sounds.

But what she was crying about was her money, not Wen Huihui.

*

The next day, Wen Yulan heard from villagers that Aunt Wen had told people that Wen Huihui had quietly married into the Cui family.

Wen Yulan fell silent after hearing this.

She knew that Uncle Wen and his wife probably hadn’t gone to find Wen Huihui last night. Did they mean to imply that Wen Huihui had married into the Cui family?

Realizing this, Wen Yulan couldn’t help but feel a chill for Wen Huihui, having such parents.

She had left Wen Huihui a lifeline.

Unfortunately, it was Wen Huihui’s own parents who had cut off that lifeline.

It was truly pitiful!

However, Wen Yulan didn’t regret her actions.

In the following days, Wen Yulan remained wary of Uncle Wen and his wife coming to trouble her, but they didn’t.

They seemed to deliberately keep their distance from her, sometimes pretending not to see her and avoiding her from afar.

Wen Yulan breathed a sigh of relief, feeling that it was for the best.

She had long wanted to have nothing to do with Uncle Wen’s family.

As for Wen Huihui, she still hadn’t returned.

Villagers assumed that Wen Huihui had married into a remote area in the deep mountains, so she couldn’t come back.

However, upon learning that Wen Huihui had supposedly married into the remote Cui family, and knowing that the Cui family practiced sh*red wives, some people immediately guessed that Uncle Wen and his wife had sold Wen Huihui to the Cui family under the guise of marriage for a high price.

While they speculated, they could only sigh at how heartless Uncle Wen and his wife were, not valuing their daughter at all.

Wen Huihui Spoiler

Wen Yulan called the police (on the third day I think?), and the police came and arrested the Cui family and brought back Huihui. I’m mentioning this here because the author skipped this event and it took some chapters before Huihui was ever mentioned again (which made me super anxious back then) So, here you go, a spoiler.

  1. You did not give her a lifeline lol
You just explained in this chapter that if they had gone quick and given the money back they mightve released their daughter, but you stole the money, so they couldnt do that even if they wanted to

    1. Yeah, the author keeps criticising the original as if it was the “Book of All Evil Without Moral”, but it’s not like the so-called cannon fodder group acts with good morals or respect the law, too.

    2. Even if they did have the money, though, they wouldn’t use it to save Wen Huihui, so it would have been the same result either way. They could have borrowed money from others, too, which they didn’t even think about at all, and only cared about the lost money rather than their unfortunate daughter. Wen Yulan also probably assumed there was plenty of money hidden in other locations, so didn’t think much about the money she took at the time. The “lifeline” was just the fact that she gave them the opportunity to try to save Wen Huihui, who they clearly didn’t care about in the end.

  2. Thanks for the spoiler! I was worried about Wen Huihui’s unfortunate fate (even though she, in essence, deserved it), but considering she could be saved in the end, despite already suffering the consequences of her actions, it’s better than nothing. I just wonder what crazy actions she’ll take against her parents while avoiding suspicion at the same time.

    Thanks for the chapter! ๐Ÿ˜€
