Chapter 7: Task in Progress

The mysterious, cold presence of the suddenly appearing robed figure felt like a death god waiting to claim a soul. The eyes hidden in the hood stared straight at Meng Nian, a small part of a pale, weak-looking chin exposed.

A faint breeze carried the blurred voice into Meng Nian’s ears.

“Come…”

“Come over…”

“Come over, Meng Nian.”

The voice was like a devil’s whisper, filled with an ominous aura.

Meng Nian took a wary step back. “Who are you? Stop pretending to be a ghost!”

The hoarse male voice gradually became clearer, as if the speaker was slowly mastering the language: “Give me your loyalty, give me your blessing.”

“Huh?” Meng Nian didn’t understand.

But seeing the person’s mysterious attire, she suddenly thought of something and couldn’t control her volume, shouting, “Are you… a witch?”

The robed figure didn’t speak.

Meng Nian looked at him. “Are you Witch Shanshan? Your outfit is exactly the same as hers in the live stream… No, Shanshan is a woman… Anyway, you’re a witch, right?”

“Witch” was a term that referred to both male and female practitioners of magic.

The robed figure raised his hand, and Meng Nian saw that he was holding a strange wand, with a red gem glowing at its tip.

“Meng Nian—”

“Give me your loyalty, give me your blessing.”

In this world, the words of a witch were like the decrees of a deity. No one would question them; people would only feel fear and offer their devotion.

Meng Nian stared at the robed figure and suddenly laughed, her voice icy. “A witch? Ridiculous!”

She stepped forward quickly and kicked at the robed figure!

Su Mu had already sensed something was wrong, as Meng Nian was not as scared as she had expected.

However, Meng Nian’s sudden attack still caught her off guard.

“Tonight’s task might not be completed,” she thought calmly.

In a world with thirty-one laws related to witches, it was indeed surprising that someone would dare to attack a witch, not knowing if it was real or fake.

Meng Nian’s attack passed right through the robed figure.

She was momentarily stunned, then saw the robed figure reappear a meter away by the wall, coldly staring at her.

“You are cursed,” the figure said.

After speaking, the figure vanished completely.

The beautiful female student stood still, her expression slowly changing, revealing resentment and gloom. She didn’t leave immediately but searched through the surrounding bushes.

Soon, Meng Nian found a small projector.

Su Mu retreated into the shadows, no longer watching Meng Nian’s actions.

Meng Nian was more difficult to deal with than she had imagined.

As expected, even a tier-one task couldn’t be that simple.

Su Mu decided not to try to persuade Meng Nian and gain her blessing through that route. Firstly, it would take too long, and secondly, Meng Nian didn’t seem like someone who could be persuaded.

Pretending to be a witch and using the witch’s authority to obtain a blessing should have been the simplest method, but it failed.

Calmly analyzing Meng Nian’s every move, Su Mu began to plan her next steps.

She had to complete this task by Friday.

Thinking this, Su Mu left the school and returned to her rented apartment.

“Ding.”

The elevator arrived, and Su Mu stepped inside. She heard footsteps behind her as another person entered.

Su Mu stood still and glanced at the girl who had just entered.

The girl looked about the same age as Su Mu, probably a student from a nearby university. Her hair was loose, and she wore a mask, obscuring her face.

Su Mu pressed the button for the seventh floor, but the girl did not press any button.

In the empty elevator, a phone rang.

The girl answered the call.

“Hello.”

Because the man on the other end raised his voice, Su Mu could hear his question:

“…Did you watch Witch Shanshan’s live stream?”

Witch Shanshan?

Su Mu lowered her eyes slightly.

“Yes,” the girl replied softly.

“Do you think she’s a real witch?” the man asked again.

“A real witch?” the girl leaned against the elevator. “Although we all want to believe that real witches exist, is there really such a thing as a witch in this world? It’s highly unlikely.”

“So you think she’s fake? But pretending to be a witch is a capital offense!”

The girl sighed. “I also don’t want anyone to get into trouble for pretending to be a witch, but there’s nothing we can do to stop it…”

“However,” she added after a moment of thought, “rationally, I think she’s fake, but… she also seems somewhat real! I can’t explain it; it’s a mix of both, fifty-fifty.”

The man’s voice on the other end of the line lowered as he said something else, then suddenly exclaimed, “More people will watch Friday’s live stream, right? Once someone important sees it, they’ll know if she’s real or fake! I really hope Shanshan is a real witch!”

“That’s what you say,” the girl questioned, “but can important people really tell if a witch is real? They’ve never seen a real witch!”

“Important people don’t make mistakes!”

“…Who knows?” the girl muttered. They chatted a bit more before hanging up.

Throughout the conversation, Su Mu’s expression didn’t change.

However, her vigilance had been heightened.

It seemed that while people in this world could accept the concept of witches, it was as vague as the belief in deities. Even those who truly believed in the existence of gods would doubt someone claiming to be a deity.

A significant number of people still saw it as a beautiful fantasy.

Would an important figure really watch the broadcast on Friday?

If this important figure didn’t believe in witches and only saw it as a hope, then no matter what, Su Mu would be considered a fake witch.

Her eyes flickered as she suddenly spoke up, “Do you know about Witch Shanshan too?”

The girl was surprised that she spoke and was momentarily stunned before saying, “Everyone knows her! The first witch to appear before the world!”

“What do you think of her?” Su Mu asked curiously.

The girl replied, “Very mysterious! She seems real! But rationally speaking, she should be fake… Actually, I really like witches! If Shanshan is a real witch, I’d be super happy!”

“Me too,” Su Mu replied casually.

When they reached the seventh floor, she got off the elevator, and the girl bid her farewell before closing the elevator doors.

Su Mu took the stairs down to the fifth floor and returned to her apartment.

After washing up, she flipped through her textbooks, took out her notebook, and began taking notes diligently.

The herbalism exam was next weekend, and she still had much to learn. Even though most students in this academy were slackers, there were still plenty of hardworking ones.

At three o’clock, Su Mu turned off the light.

The next day, Wednesday, at eight o’clock.

Su Mu saw Meng Nian leave the dormitory from a distance. She stretched her stiff limbs, pulled down the brim of her hat, and followed.

As the recognized campus belle, Meng Nian was very popular. Almost everyone in the school knew her, so she received a lot of attention wherever she went.

“Good morning, Senior Meng!”

“Good morning, Meng Nian!”

“Morning, belle!”

“Can I get your WeChat?”

Meng Nian was used to this. She glanced arrogantly at everyone and ignored them, heading straight for the cafeteria.

At that moment, a girl in a loose shirt, who looked unremarkable, was also about to enter. In her haste, she accidentally bumped into Meng Nian.
