Chapter 8: The Witch’s Black Cat
Meng Nian frowned, “Are you blind?”
“Sorry, sorry,” the girl apologized quickly, keeping her head down.
“If you don’t need your eyes, donate them to someone who does!” Meng Nian glared at the girl before walking in.
Her roommate glanced at the girl and smiled reassuringly, “Don’t mind her, Meng Nian is just like that. Just be more careful next time.”
“Okay, okay,” the black-haired girl nodded repeatedly.
The commotion ended, and Meng Nian and her group went inside.
Behind them, the plainly dressed girl slowly lifted her face, her eyes cool and serene like the moon.
Su Mu didn’t enter the cafeteria. She blended into the crowd and pulled out her phone.
The locator displayed Meng Nian’s real-time position on Su Mu’s screen.
She stared at it expressionlessly for a couple of seconds.
“Host,” the system suddenly spoke.
“Hmm?”
The system fell silent again.
This was the first time it had encountered such an unusual host.
The essence of the task was to become friends with Meng Nian and then earn her blessing, but Su Mu’s series of actions had even the system, which had guided countless hosts, a bit puzzled.
Su Mu put down her phone, “System, you do have self-awareness, don’t you?”
The system remained silent, as if it hadn’t spoken at all.
Su Mu didn’t expect the system to say more. She walked to the nearby bushes and softly called, “Xiao Bu.”
“Meow~” came a small cat’s meow, and a completely black cat emerged from the bushes.
It obediently walked to Su Mu’s side, tilting its head to look at her.
This stray cat often appeared in the area. Su Mu had fed it a few times and named it Xiao Bu.
Judging by its appearance, it was pitch black, with eyes that weren’t quite round, making it look anything but cute—more like something cold and ominous.
But it was actually very docile, lazy, and not very active. Once familiar, it would even seek out attention for petting.
Su Mu crouched down and looked into its eyes, “Help me out with something, and I’ll treat you to a feast.”
In the sunlight, the black cat’s eyes looked sharp and fierce.
Two seconds later, Xiao Bu rubbed against Su Mu’s pant leg. “Meow meow?”
Su Mu picked it up and placed it into the bag she carried with her.
Xiao Bu didn’t resist, only lifting its small head to look at Su Mu in confusion.
“It’s okay, there’s still Plan B,” Su Mu muttered softly, “Plan C.”
Meng Nian was indeed a difficult target.
Su Mu stood up, her black hair falling to obscure her expression. She retracted her aura, blending in with the crowd as an ordinary student.
Shortly after Su Mu left, someone arrived at the spot she had just vacated. A pale finger reached out, touching the sunlight.
“…Xiao Bu?” came a puzzled voice.
…
Su Mu went to a nearby clothing store and changed into a more inconspicuous outfit, also buying a wig.
Half an hour later, she re-entered the campus, now sporting short hair, black clothes, and a mask.
Following the movement of the red dot on her phone, Su Mu headed in that direction.
As the school beauty, Meng Nian’s schedule was almost public knowledge. A simple query on the confession wall would reveal it.
Su Mu knew Meng Nian only had one class in the morning.
She herself had no classes all day, making it convenient for her plans.
Meng Nian was now in the campus convenience store. Su Mu approached and, finding a secluded spot, took out the black cat.
“Meow?” Xiao Bu nuzzled her hand.
Su Mu petted its head. “It’s up to you now.”
…
Meng Nian realized she had been played last night.
That person was definitely a suitor of Qi Sui, who, after being rejected, blamed her.
Ridiculous!
Meng Nian never believed that the other person was a real witch, and as for the so-called “curse” at the end, she didn’t take it seriously at all.
She stood in front of the shelf, casually picked up two pens, still thinking about how to find that person and get her revenge.
Sunlight shone into the small store, the glass reflecting a dazzling light. Meng Nian turned around a shelf and casually glanced outside.
Then… she frowned slightly.
A pitch-black cat was standing outside the glass door. Its black pupils hidden behind the sunlight, appearing empty and cold.
“Ugly,” Meng Nian didn’t care and continued to choose what she wanted.
“That cat… looks creepy,” her roommate muttered beside her.
“After all, black always represents something bad,” someone else said. “Like crows.”
Meng Nian ignored them. After she finished picking her items, the black cat had already disappeared.
After buying their things, they walked towards the library.
The library required a student card to enter, so there was a line extending out to the steps.
Meng Nian stood at the end of the line, just about to ask the person in front of her to make way when her roommate’s voice sounded: “Hey? It’s that cat again.”
Meng Nian turned around. Not far away on the lawn, the black cat’s tail was swaying. Its sharp vertical pupils were staring at her, and its face seemed to be smiling.
“Ugly thing.” Meng Nian recalled horror movies she had seen and felt a chill down her spine.
At 9:50, Meng Nian left the library to attend her only class of the day.
The black cat flitted past the classroom window, letting out a light “meow.”
After lunch, on her way back to the dormitory, Meng Nian suddenly sensed something. She turned her head sharply—the black cat was standing not far away, its tail curled beside it, its pitch-black pupils staring straight at her.
“Damn!” she cursed and started running.
This was too creepy!
Why was the cat everywhere?
Could it be following her?
A short-haired girl approached, her head down, engrossed in a phone call:
“Oh… you’re talking about a witch? Strange concept. Why would a witch have a black cat? Cool? What kind of reason is that?”
“…,” Meng Nian’s pupils contracted as she passed the girl.
A witch with a black cat?
Black cat?!
At that moment, the eerie, hoarse words of the person in the black robe from last night echoed in her ears once more: “You are cursed.”
Cursed…
Cursed…
Meng Nian’s expression changed repeatedly. Her breathing became lighter, and her blood felt frozen.
Although she didn’t believe that person was a real witch, it didn’t mean Meng Nian was unaware of how terrifying a witch’s power could be.
What if… what if that person really was a witch?
Meng Nian didn’t dare to think further. She was drenched in cold sweat and almost fled back to her dorm.
What should she do?
What could she do?
Meng Nian curled up in her bed, trying to control her trembling body and think of a solution.
“Bang!” A loud noise startled her.
Meng Nian’s face turned pale, but it was only her roommate pushing the door open.
