Chapter 10: Task Completed

The black cat seemed to sense the danger and meowed desperately.

“Meow! Meow! Meow!”

“Meow! Meow! Meow! Meow! Meow!”

The piercing cries echoed by the lakeside, adding an eerie touch to the scene.

Wang Jun felt a chill down her spine. She lifted the black cat, ready to submerge it in the water.

At that moment, a deep female voice rang out:

“What are you doing?”

Wang Jun jumped, her heart skipping a beat.

“Who?” Meng Nian was also startled.

The three of them turned around and saw a girl in a gray dress standing not far away. Her upper body was hidden in the shadow of the streetlamp, making it impossible to see her face or expression, but her pale fingers were clearly holding a phone, recording them.

No one knew when this girl had appeared.

“What are you doing?” Wang Jun realized something was wrong. If their actions were really recorded, although deliberately killing an animal wasn’t illegal, such malicious behavior could affect their grades, and if public opinion grew strong enough, they could be expelled.

The girl stood there, her expression unclear. “I should be asking you, what are you doing? Killing this cat?”

“No!” the last roommate retorted. “We… we were just playing with this cat! It’s ours!”

“Meow! Meow! Meow!” The black cat struggled, its cries pitiful.

“Yours?” The girl seemed to sneer.

Wang Jun quickly released the cat, shouting guiltily, “Classmate, secretly recording others isn’t right, is it?”

“Mind your own business!” Meng Nian said with a sullen face. “We wouldn’t do anything to the cat! Delete the video immediately!”

After being let go, the cat quickly disappeared into the night.

The girl glanced in the direction where the cat had vanished, then looked at the others and slowly lowered her phone.

The three of them rushed toward the girl simultaneously, intending to grab the phone and delete the video.

However, the girl seemed to anticipate this and swiftly retreated into the shadows, then ran into the wooded path, her figure quickly hidden by the trees.

“Damn it!” Meng Nian’s face was as dark as coal.

The perfect plan, ruined at the final step!

“She won’t post the video, will she?” Wang Jun asked anxiously.

“Probably not… Besides, we didn’t get a chance to do anything to the black cat. Even if it gets posted, what can it prove? We can easily say we were joking and playing with the cat!” the roommate nervously analyzed.

At this point, they could only wait for another opportunity next time.

The other two were fine, but Meng Nian couldn’t suppress the malevolent aura rising within her.

Just a little more…

She wanted to kill that person!

She lowered her head, her expression hidden in the dark.

“Meng Nian? Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” she said slowly.

Leaving Zhiming Lake, Su Mu’s expression was also grim.

She hadn’t expected Meng Nian to be this insane.

Using someone else to kill the cat to transfer the curse or drag more people down with her?

How could a student come up with such a malicious scheme?

Su Mu put the wig back into her bag, walking through the campus with a cold face.

People passed by, chatting and laughing, but her eyes were devoid of warmth.

Indeed… trying to persuade Meng Nian was impossible, wasn’t it?

She even used her roommates.

Su Mu glanced at the moon from afar, her long eyelashes casting shadows over her eyes, reflecting the bright and clean light.

She thought quietly for a while, then lowered her gaze and went to find Xiaobu.

Su Mu brought Xiaobu back to her place, sincerely apologizing to it and promising to replace its furniture in a few days—completely disregarding whether a cat could understand.

The little black cat looked at her with pure black eyes, meowing.

After comforting Xiaobu, Su Mu reviewed her plan for the next day in her mind, then opened the study notes link sent by Feng Sa and began to study.

The next day, she started executing her Plan C.

*

Meng Nian noticed that the black cat was no longer around today.

She also noticed that her roommates seemed to have received some kind of magical boost, becoming extremely… lucky.

“What kind of day is this? Buying milk tea, I’m the lucky customer and get it for free; buying clothes, I come across a weird buy-one-get-one-free deal!”

“By the way, this clothing quality is really good! How can they not lose money with a buy-one-get-one-free deal?”

“Hahaha! Who cares! Is today our lucky day? It’s so bizarre. Someone even topped up my phone with a few hundred yuan because it was his ex-girlfriend’s number and he regrets breaking up…”

“If we’re this lucky, then yesterday’s incident… should be fine, right?”

“Definitely! Look, no counselors or anyone have come to talk to us!”

“That’s good! I was scared to death… but really, we didn’t do anything, so why be afraid?”

“…”

While those around her chatted away, Meng Nian felt increasingly unbalanced inside.

Why?

Where did things go wrong?

Even if those two didn’t actually harm the witch’s black cat, they were just one step away, weren’t they?

Their malice was real!

Couldn’t the witch sense it?

Why? Why!

Why would they still be blessed!

Meng Nian couldn’t believe that these two were simply lucky. It couldn’t be a coincidence that everything was going their way!

Even these two plain-looking people received several love letters with different handwriting today!

That was the kind of treatment she should be getting!

Jealousy and resentment made Meng Nian very uncomfortable. She recalled the night she encountered the witch, feeling that she deserved the favorable treatment.

The witch… was real, and the curse shouldn’t have been hers!

The witch had initially chosen her!

Meng Nian couldn’t understand and didn’t know what to do to regain that favor.

In the reading room, her pen scratched long marks across the paper.

“Happy birthday! Blessings to you!” a girl behind her whispered into a phone.

Meng Nian suddenly thought of something—blessings!

“Give me your loyalty, give me your blessings.”

So that’s it!

Meng Nian dropped her pen and ran out of the reading room, leaving her roommates behind.

She returned to her dorm, washed up, lit incense, then sat in her spot, closed her eyes, and sincerely said:

“Witch, I realize my mistakes. I will always be loyal to you. I genuinely bless you and hope you can bring me good luck.”

At the same time, a task completion notification sounded in Su Mu’s mind.

“Would the host like to receive the reward now?”

“No,” Su Mu replied as she packed her things and left the reading room for the classroom. “I’ll claim it when I get back.”

“Understood,” the system responded coldly. “Congratulations to the host for completing the first task.”

“Thank you,” Su Mu replied with little emotion, her voice almost as cold as the system’s.

Meng Nian, despite being frightened twice, failed to give her blessing. However, seeing those around her prosper slightly more drove her to quickly offer her blessing to Su Mu.

It was both surprising and exactly as expected.
