Chapter 20: Part of the reason is that Yao’er is too powerful

In the lab, a separate isolation room had been temporarily designated as Yu Yan’s hospital room.

“Or do you think you need to stay in a hospital?” Su He asked the waking Yu Yan.

“There’s no need. For this kind of viral infection, the hospital doesn’t have a special cure, and with so many people around, it’s inconvenient. Besides, this lab has all the necessary medical equipment, so it’s more suitable for me to stay here.”

Yu Yan knew that if there was anyone in this world who could develop a life-saving drug for him, it would undoubtedly be the protagonist little sister in front of him. At this moment, there was no need to look further afield.

“Then are you not planning to tell your family, staying here alone? I’m afraid I won’t be able to take care of you all the time,” Su He hesitated and then wondered, “What about your assistant Xiao Gao? Isn’t he usually very diligent at work? Why hasn’t he arrived today?”

“Oh, he took sick leave,” Yu Yan said casually, rubbing his aching temples.

“That’s quite unfortunate. How is it that he falls ill just when you have an accident?” Su He pondered whether to find someone to help look after the patient.

Her inadvertent remark made Yu Yan pause his action of rubbing his temples and, with some thought, ask, “Has junior checked on 012’s condition? What’s causing his current state? I remember that during this period, both the temperature control and food have been the same as before, with no changes.”

They hadn’t conducted any experiments on 012; at most, they had taken some blood samples for testing. His sudden onset of mating period should have some reason behind it.

An accident or something intentional?

Su He slapped her forehead. “I’ve been so busy observing your condition that I haven’t had a chance to pay attention to 012.”

“Wait here, I’ll go check on 012.”

She hurried off, but soon returned with a defeated expression.

Yu Yan opened his eyes and looked at her, questioning what had happened.

“012’s condition isn’t good. After being injected with medication in the triple isolation box, he didn’t stay calm for long and has become agitated again. The blood collection device was even destroyed when it got close to him.”

The dosage of the anesthetic had already exceeded the limit and couldn’t be used again in the short term.

Su He, used to 012’s previous cooperation, was now experiencing the difficulties that her old friend Zhou Sheqing had described about researching 012.

“I’ll go take a look,” Yu Yan said, lifting the blanket and getting out of bed.

He staggered a bit, and Su He stepped forward to support his arm.

“You’re in this state; are you sure you can manage?”

“I can. While most of the virus hasn’t fully taken effect yet, we need to act quickly.”

Yu Yan noticed her holding his hand and joked, “Don’t touch me too much. If you get infected too, we’ll be in real trouble.”

“You’re not like 012. You won’t get infected through ordinary contact; it’s currently only through direct contact and respiratory infection,” Su He said, honestly putting on gloves.

Yu Yan chuckled inside the respirator.

This respirator not only assisted with breathing but also filtered out viruses.

As he took a few steps, Yu Yan felt his weakness, partly due to the severity of the infection and partly because…

For Yu Yan, who was an inexperienced asexual, it was indeed an unprecedented experience.

While helping him walk outside, Su He hesitated but finally asked, “Are you really okay with going to see 012?”

“If it weren’t for being infected, I wouldn’t care about this at all,” Yu Yan’s voice sounded weak inside the respirator.

He said slowly, “Besides, 012 might care more than me when he comes to his senses.”

Su He was skeptical. “012 has such rich emotions?”

An experimental subject cultivated in a lab, who had only ever seen humans, initially recognized himself as human but was continually denied.

“Smart and reclusive, clearly disliking humans, yet due to his lack of awareness, he tried to court a human male… Ugh, just thinking about it is a disaster.”

The courtship, in a sense, was both a success and a failure.

Yu Yan’s commentary seemed detached, as if he were not directly involved in the accident.

From Yu Yan’s observations, 012 was actually very intelligent. He was fully aware as both an experimental subject and an observer, yet maintained an attitude of non-communication with humans, watching them with disdain as they brought about their own demise.

Yu Yan thought he understood 012’s psychology and behavior, and felt fearless in his interactions, but such an accident was unexpected, and 012 probably didn’t foresee it either.

Upon reaching the damaged feeding area for 012, Yu Yan stopped.

He looked up at the several-meter-tall glass panel, shocked by the spiderweb-like cracks spreading across it.

“What’s this?”

“012 caused it,” Su He replied.

Yu Yan’s first reaction was, “He has that much strength? According to the data from the Central District Research Institute, his maximum strength is rated at Class 3, but I remember this glass’s resistance level is Class 6?”

Su He sneered, “It’s not that they didn’t test the data accurately; it’s that they’ve concealed the correct data.”

Yu Yan took another look at the web-like cracks spreading across the entire glass panel.

What troubled him more than the physical damage was actually another matter.

He had lost to a light, fluttering bird in strength. It was one thing to be dragged away in one go, but several attempts to resist were suppressed.

He had wondered if his recent lifestyle had become too decadent, lacking exercise. He had even considered improving his fitness in the future to avoid losing to a mere bird or bat.

Now, though, he thought it was pointless. Such strength couldn’t be achieved through regular exercise, unless one used special, expensive gene therapies.

Sometimes, one had to face their own abilities honestly, and control the desire for victory.

Behind the astonishing spiderweb cracks were broken trees and flowers, in disarray as if struck by a hurricane.

And that nest.

Remembering that the large willow trees had been brought in at his request and that he had purchased the flowers himself, Yu Yan felt a pang of embarrassment and thought he was a bit foolish.

This was what one would call digging their own grave.

He quickened his pace past the “crime scene” and arrived at another isolation room.

The space inside the triple isolation chamber was small, with 012 lying inside, wings folded.

Yu Yan saw his back, and his body was still heaving violently, as if he had just struggled. The innermost layer of the isolation chamber had faint cracks.

012 was perceptive and could usually sense Yu Yan’s presence whenever he approached, but this time, he seemed to have lost his usual sharpness.

Yu Yan leaned against the isolation box, weakly tapping on the glass.

His body was not feeling well, and even this short distance had him gasping for breath.

The familiar tapping sound made 012’s ear feathers perk up, and he suddenly turned around.

Yu Yan didn’t look into his eyes but first focused on the rows of data above his head.

Current health value had dropped to 35.

Current status was sober, but pain level was too high.

Most of the injuries were self-inflicted during his bouts of rage.

The emotion displayed was anger.

It was a rare emotion. Yu Yan had previously tried to provoke 012 by doing things he disliked to increase his disgust value, expecting him to react with anger. However, the emotion column had never shown “anger” before; most of the time it only displayed “annoyed,” and rarely “irritated.”

The red-marked danger value, initially 60, had increased for the first time in over two months, rising to 75.

The disgust value, which had been steadily increasing, had indeed gone up as well. Yu Yan quickly glanced at the data: 75, matching the danger value.

After reviewing these data points, Yu Yan’s gaze moved downward, finally meeting 012’s eyes.

Contrary to his expectations of seeing madness or extreme anger, 012’s eyes were surprisingly calm.

The silver-blue eyes, not yet completely faded, quietly stared at him.

He had sensed something was off earlier.

Yu Yan glanced at the data above 012’s head again, stopping at the disgust value that had skyrocketed to 75.

He remembered it had been disgust value—when did it turn into favorability?

He looked again.

[Favorability towards the host: 75/100]

He wasn’t seeing things.

Yu Yan wasn’t constantly monitoring the semi-transparent data above 012’s head. Even when he did, he focused more on the data that changed in the background, and he hadn’t really noticed when the text in front changed.

He only remembered that the value had been 60 last night.

A sudden increase of 15 overnight—why? Was it due to the courtship behavior?

Yu Yan found it baffling.

012 spread his hands against the isolation layer, and Yu Yan, leaning against it, felt his face pressed against it as well.

Su He, watching from the side, almost doubted if she had read something into his actions that wasn’t really there.

While Senior Kang might not know, she was aware that just moments ago, 012 had been raging here.

“Let’s take some blood and check your condition. Can you cooperate?” Yu Yan tapped the glass again.

012 didn’t respond, only continued to stare at him.

So Yu Yan suddenly bent over and coughed a couple of times, saying, “It’s over, I’m infected and going to die, cough cough.”

012’s sharp claws scraped against the isolation layer, making a grating sound.

He said, “You said you wouldn’t die.”

Yu Yan instantly understood the implication, sighed, and forced a smile. “The chameleon might not die, but me, I’m not so sure.”

012 shook his head. “You’re a liar.”

With that, he clenched his fist and slammed it heavily against the isolation layer, triggering the pressure alarm once again.

Yu Yan was momentarily choked, and actually started coughing.

Su He grabbed Yu Yan, trying to pull him out of the isolation room. “Let’s go. He’s gone berserk again. Try another approach and don’t provoke him any further.”

Provoke him? He did seem aggressive, but the current emotion displayed above 012’s head had shifted from anger to sadness.

Sadness was a new term appearing over 012’s head.

“Cough, cough! Wait a moment.” Yu Yan waved his hand and tapped the isolation chamber twice.

“Listen, don’t destroy any more of the lab equipment.”

“Let’s take blood samples and treat me. Cooperate, understand?”

Su He said, “Stop talking. It’s not that simple. When the subject becomes agitated…”

012 stopped his actions.

Yu Yan said, “You broke the automatic blood collection device. Here’s a manual blood collection tool; you can draw your own blood.”

The blood collection tool was sent into the isolation box. 012 didn’t touch it, only stared coldly at Yu Yan. Anyone would think he really disliked the human in front of him.

After a while, Su He said, “He probably won’t cooperate with us right now…”

012 made a move, took the blood collection tool, and drew his own blood, performing the task with surprising skill.

Su He was speechless.

Is this how it has to be? Do you really have to slap me in the face right after I speak?
