Chapter 63 – Chen Xue’s Blind Date

On the village side, as the discussion went on, they saw Mother Hu running towards them from a distance, “My son, you’re finally back! I’ve missed you so much!”

Hu Jianjun held his mother, “Mother, I’m back. I made you worry!”

After an emotional reunion, the mother and son calmed down their excitement and longing. Hu Jianjun chatted with the villagers for a while before taking his mother home.

Lu Xia and the others, not being familiar with them, didn’t get closer. They could only see from a distance that Hu Jianjun was not particularly handsome, but he had a determined military aura about him, and he was quite tan.

Lu Xia didn’t feel anything, but the female educated youths seemed to find him quite appealing.

Especially Zhou Lai’er, her face turned red, clearly showing her interest.

However, the problem was that his conditions were too good, and it wasn’t certain whether he would be interested in her.

Over the next few days, news about Hu Jianjun gradually spread.

It was said that he had been promoted to platoon leader and would be able to join the army after getting married.

There were also rumors that he had met several girls recently, but none of them were suitable.

Just as everyone was curious about which family would be chosen by the village’s “diamond bachelor,” Mrs. Xu, the women’s director of the village, came to the educated youth spot.

Everyone was surprised by her arrival and didn’t know what was happening.

Who knew that after she arrived, she explained the purpose of her visit. She came to find Chen Xue and introduce a potential partner for her, and that potential partner was none other than the recent hot topic in the village, Hu Jianjun.

Everyone was surprised to hear this because Mother Hu hadn’t previously considered the female educated youths.

Although they didn’t know the reason, everyone was still happy for Chen Xue. After all, compared to others, Hu Jianjun’s conditions were really good.

Chen Xue had been in the countryside for two years. If she married Hu Jianjun and followed him into the army, she would no longer be within the scope of the educated youth. She wouldn’t have to endure such hardships anymore.

So for a moment, everyone was happy for Chen Xue.

Except for Zhou Lai’er.

Her expression was very ugly at the moment. She had clearly taken an interest in Hu Jianjun first, but in the end, he chose Chen Xue.

Zhou Lai’er felt as if she had been slapped in the face.

Looking at Chen Xue, who seemed even more beautiful with a shy, red face, Zhou Lai’er gritted her teeth and left.

Actually, Lu Xia understood why they chose Chen Xue. After all, she was the most beautiful female educated youth in the educated youth spot before, and she had already been in the village for two years, so the villagers knew her better.

Chen Xue had a low-key personality, she was beautiful, and she didn’t cause trouble. She was indeed a good candidate for a daughter-in-law.

Lu Xia couldn’t help but feel a bit sorry for Chen Xue when she thought of Hu Jianjun’s average appearance. However, she had to admit that, given the current circumstances, he was indeed the best choice.

Chen Xue herself was also very happy.

The next day, she dressed up nicely and went on the blind date with Director Xu.

The result was self-evident.

Lu Xia understood it in her heart.

Hu Jianjun had seen a lot during his time in the army, so he probably wanted a wife who was a bit more educated. Chen Xue, being so beautiful and educated, indeed met all his criteria.

Both parties were satisfied, and it was a happy ending.

They quickly started preparing for the wedding.

Hu Jianjun had limited leave, so they needed to get married as soon as possible to make arrangements for joining the army afterward.

As the “home” of Chen Xue, the educated youth spot also became busy.

This was the first wedding in the educated youth spot since Lu Xia arrived. She didn’t know what she could do to help, but she thought that since they had known each other for a while, she would prepare some gifts for the occasion.

However, she didn’t expect that her gift wouldn’t be given.

What was supposed to be a certain wedding took an unexpected turn.

Chapter 64 – Falling into Water and Rescue

.

After Chen Xue and Hu Jianjun’s successful blind date, they quickly set a date for their wedding, which was in five days.

According to the local customs, the couple couldn’t meet each other before the wedding.

So during these days, Chen Xue was busy packing her things and preparing her dowry at the educated youth spot, while Hu Jianjun prepared things for the wedding.

However, on this day, just as Hu Jianjun returned from the town with his purchases, he heard a scream as he passed by the river downstream.

As a soldier, his instincts told him that something had happened, so he rushed over without thinking and saw a woman in the water.

Without hesitation, he jumped into the river to rescue her.

However, he didn’t expect that the woman in the river seemed to cling to him as if he were her only lifeline. When she saw him approaching, she tightly held onto him, making the rescue more difficult.

He exerted a lot of effort to pull her to the shore.

But even on the shore, the woman was still scared and clung tightly to him.

At that moment, other villagers who had heard the noise also rushed over.

Seeing this scene, they were all astonished and couldn’t find words to say.

Finally, one of the aunties asked, “Jianjun, what happened?”

Hu Jianjun shook his head, “I don’t know. I heard the sound and came over. This comrade fell into the water. After pulling her out, she seemed scared. Auntie, can you help me separate her from me?”

“Ah, sure.” The auntie breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing this, realizing that they had misunderstood the situation. She hurried over to support the female comrade and tried to separate her from Hu Jianjun.

However, they didn’t expect the female comrade to struggle vigorously while trembling and sobbing, “Don’t touch me! My clothes are all wet. Do you want me to die like this?”

Hearing her words, everyone noticed that her white shirt was soaked, clinging tightly to her body, revealing her curves.

Some male comrades turned their heads instinctively, while some others looked at Hu Jianjun with meaningful eyes.

Hu Jianjun frowned when he saw the woman clinging to his arm as if blocking others’ views. He then took off his coat and draped it over her.

“It’s alright now, Comrade. You can let go.”

The woman choked out her thanks and finally released his arm, raising her head.

That’s when everyone saw her face and recognized who she was.

“Isn’t this Educated Youth Zhou? How did she end up here?”

“Yeah, usually, we do laundry somewhere else. Did she come here on purpose to jump into the river?”

“Thank goodness she encountered Jianjun. This river is deep. Otherwise, it would have been another life lost.”

“Yeah, what’s so unbearable that she had to jump into the river?”

Several aunties approached and comforted her.

Zhou Lai’er weakly smiled and said, “Aunties, you misunderstood. I was just coming here to catch fish, but my leg cramped up, and I accidentally got washed away by the water.”

Hearing her explanation, everyone understood.

“Oh, I see. This place is too deep. You have to be careful.”

“Yes, you shouldn’t do something like this again.”

Seeing that the situation was under control and that Zhou Lai’er was fine, Hu Jianjun decided to leave.

“Aunties, please take this comrade back. I’ll head back first. There’s a lot to do, especially with the wedding coming up.”

“Alright, Jianjun, you go take care of your business. You’re getting married soon, and you have a lot on your plate.”

Zhou Lai’er didn’t expect him to leave like this. It wasn’t what she had expected. So she took the initiative and said, “Thank you, Brother Hu, for saving me. I’ll wash the clothes and bring them to you later.”

Hu Jianjun nodded expressionlessly. “It’s fine. Just be more careful in the future.” With that, he left directly.

Zhou Lai’er had an ugly expression on her face, but she mustered up the courage to thank the villagers who had come running when they heard the commotion.

  1. Poor Chen Xue, it seems like her fiancé will end up getting schemed away from her. Hopefully she will end up having a better life overall by hanging in there and taking the college examinations later on! Thank you for the chapter!

  2. “Lu Xia couldn’t help but feel a bit sorry for Chen Xue when she thought of Hu Jianjun’s average appearance.”

Wut ? He has a good job, seems like a decent guy but the mc can’t help but just look at his appearance hu ? …. sigh, well that’s just how it is guys, we live in a visual world after all, if you don’t look good just don’t bother really, just pray or be ready to be the funniest most interesting guy ever and be ready for a lot of rejections even then, and maybe you’ll find a girl.

  3. It’s really disheartening that the wedding fell through. Even if LX criticized him based on his look, he seems to be a decent and capable man. I don’t want such person to go through the typical plot of the “peasant boy turning into prospective soldier” in this kind of genre (the one in which he and his entire family end up in tragedy).
