Chapter 19: The Three People in Black (1)

“Alright, I got it.” Although you might not be able to help me much.

After finishing that topic, Feng Sa brought up Witch Shanshan: “You must have watched last night’s live stream, right?”

“Yeah,” Su Mu replied.

“Wasn’t it exciting? Wasn’t it thrilling!” Feng Sa said enthusiastically. “Shanshan made five potions. One was put in a blue rose, and the remaining four were different colors… I think their effects might be…”

From then on, it was all Feng Sa talking, while Su Mu ate her noodles, occasionally responding.

Finally, Feng Sa, after talking so much that his mouth was dry, stopped and focused on his meal.

When he finished eating, Su Mu looked up, seemingly curious, and asked, “How did you end up working for the Bureau of Paranormal Investigation?”

She lowered her voice to make sure only Feng Sa could hear.

“I wanted to get close to witches, so I joined. Who knew the name was a complete scam?” Feng Sa said disdainfully. “Low pay, little work, the boss is unreasonable and stubborn, and they change their attitude faster than flipping a book.”

Su Mu’s eyes flickered, “How do they view Shanshan?”

“Didn’t I tell you yesterday? At first, they held a big meeting and sentenced her to death right away! No matter what Shanshan said, they insisted on capturing her! But after watching last night’s live stream and seeing Shanshan really perform magic, it was hilarious—they immediately notified us overnight not to say anything that would offend Shanshan…”

Su Mu finally understood the whole story.

However, it seemed that Feng Sa wasn’t deeply involved and didn’t know about “EN.”

After finishing their meal, Su Mu asked Feng Sa a few more academic questions, and then they each returned to their respective schools.

As Su Mu walked around campus, she felt many people looking at her.

“Is she really Feng Sa’s girlfriend? Is it true?”

“Feng Sa said it himself! How could it be fake? Someone saw them having dinner together!”

“I heard Senior Qi, the campus heartthrob, tried to cause trouble for Su Mu, and Feng Sa almost got into a fight with him…”

“Senior Qi couldn’t be that kind of person!”

“…”

Gossip always spreads faster than anything else.

Su Mu put on her hat and quickened her pace.

She didn’t care about those rumors, but too much attention meant trouble.

It was the weekend, and there were no classes. Su Mu had come back to school to find some useful books in the library.

After entering the library, she quickly found the books she needed and left the school.

When she got home, she greeted Xiao Bu, then took out the books and prepared to continue studying.

At that moment, her phone suddenly rang.

It was the first time in a week that Su Mu had received a call. She was momentarily stunned before taking out her phone and seeing the caller ID: “Mom.”

The original Su Mu’s mother?

Su Mu answered the call.

“Hello, Xiao Mu.”

“…Mom.”

“Why haven’t you called home for so long? Do you still have enough money? Xiao Mu, don’t worry about saving money for us. Your dad is doing well at the construction site. The supervisor praised his work and wants to give him a raise!”

“…Mm.” Su Mu responded briefly.

In the original story, the current “Su Mu” had already died, and the family had been informed of the news. The neighbors despised them because their daughter had pretended to be a witch, making an already difficult situation even harder.

“Aunt Feng from the Feng family told me you’ve become much more cheerful lately, but I knew she was just trying to make me feel better!” Su Mu’s mother sighed. “Xiao Mu, don’t carry too much burden. As long as you’re happy, that’s all your dad and I need. Even if the school isn’t great, it doesn’t mean your future is ruined, right?”

“You’re still young, starting college at sixteen—that alone shows you’re really amazing, doesn’t it? You don’t need to be afraid of what others think or be scared to call home…”

“Alright, I understand.”

“That’s more like it. Your brother misses you. Do you want to talk to him?” Su Mu’s mother suggested, thinking her daughter and son, being close in age, would have more to talk about.

Brother?

Su Mu recalled for a moment and remembered his name was Su Xi.

She responded with a soft “Mm.”

After a moment of rustling sounds on the other end of the line, a deep male voice came through, “Sis.”

Su Xi was fifteen, a high school freshman. Though young, his voice was already breaking, sounding quite mature. If she didn’t know his age, Su Mu might have thought he was a man in his twenties.

“Su Xi,” Su Mu called out.

“…” What followed was a long silence between them.

After a while, unable to bear the awkward silence, Su Xi said, “Sis, if you have any trouble, you should go to Brother Feng Sa.”

“Mm,” Su Mu replied.

“I… things are good here at home. How about you?” Su Xi clumsily tried to find something to say.

“I’m doing well too.”

Xiao Bu jumped onto the table, tilting its head at Su Mu. She petted its head, and it meowed contentedly.

Su Xi heard it. “Did you get a cat? Wait, no, pets aren’t allowed in the dorm… are you outside?”

“Mm, I’m outside. It’s a stray cat.”

Su Mu couldn’t tell him she was renting a place, as explaining the source of the money would be tricky.

For the same reason, she couldn’t send money home, as it might bring danger to her family.

“Oh…” Su Xi responded, his voice lowering a bit. “I’ll come to visit you there in a while.”

“Okay.”

“…So, I’ll hang up now?”

“Goodbye.”

“…”

The call ended, and Su Mu calmly set down her phone.

She was very clear on one thing: these were the original owner’s family members. They cared about the original Su Mu, not her.

She had long since had no family.

Su Mu looked around. Sunlight streamed in, casting golden specks, making the window sill bright and clean. A gentle breeze blew in.

The silence was almost eerie.

Xiao Bu rubbed against her hand.

Su Mu picked up her book and turned to the next page.

In the supermarket.

Su Mu carried her bags and walked out, her face mostly covered by a mask, revealing only her cool, clear eyes.

“Please come again,” the woman in uniform at the door said with a cheerful smile.

Evening had fallen outside, but the air was still stiflingly hot. Su Mu took off her hat and walked toward her apartment complex.

Her long hair was tied up, her skin was fair, and her overall demeanor was as clean and refreshing as frost and snow. Her beautiful eyes were as ethereal and enchanting as the moon.

There was an air of aloofness about her, but it didn’t come off as arrogance. It was the indifference of a solitary person, making it seem like no one could enter her world. It made people hesitate to approach her, yet irresistibly want to be that exception.

The wind lifted the strands of hair by her face, brushing against her eyes. Her lashes, like the wings of a butterfly, fluttered gently.

She was a mysterious and uniquely captivating girl.

Shi Xing stood not far away, thinking this.
