Chapter 153 – One Quilt

Upon seeing this, Lu Xia laughed and said, “I do want to play, but I don’t know how.”

“No worries, I don’t know either. It’s said to be very simple, we can learn it, if you can’t remember it, let your Old Jiang learn it together!” Su Man joked.

Old Jiang…Jiang Junmo smiled and said, “You play, I’ll teach you.”

“Really?” Lu Xia looked at him in surprise.

“I’ve played before.”

“Alright then, I’ll give it a try, but you have to guide me.”

“Okay!”

In fact, the rules were simple, and after playing a couple of rounds, Lu Xia got the hang of it. Soon, she could play without Jiang Junmo’s reminders, and they ended up playing until evening.

They didn’t gamble with money since it was considered gambling, which was something no one dared to touch.

Instead, they played with sticky notes. Lu Xia now had quite a few sticky notes on her face, and the others were in a similar state.

Seeing that it was getting late, Jiang Junmo, who had to return home early to cook, came to pick her up.

So, they finally disbanded.

Back at home, Jiang Junmo brought the cooked food to the table, and as they ate, he asked, “Did you enjoy it?”

Lu Xia nodded, “It was alright, a way to pass the time. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to focus on reading during the New Year.”

Jiang Junmo chuckled, “That’s good. Whenever you’re free, you can play.”

Lu Xia nodded, “Maybe. But today, I noticed something between Gu Xiangnan and Su Man.”

It seemed like the two of them exchanged glances from time to time, their eyes filled with affection.

In truth, Jiang Junmo had long noticed that Lu Xia seemed particularly interested in Gu Xiangnan and Su Man’s relationship. He wasn’t sure why she was so curious about it, but he didn’t comment on it, since their relationship had nothing to do with him.

Lu Xia already knew his attitude, and she didn’t expect any response. She just wanted to talk about it, as it was hard to keep such feelings to herself.

After dinner, Lu Xia volunteered to wash the dishes since Jiang Junmo had been busy with everything lately, and she felt like she should do something too.

Jiang Junmo didn’t argue and went inside to tidy up.

When she finished washing the dishes and entered the room, she saw that the two cotton quilts that were originally on the kang had been combined into one and placed in the middle. It looked quite familiar.

Upon closer inspection, it was the quilt that the Jiang family had sent them when they got married. The quilt cover was bright red with vibrant peony patterns, clearly meant for newlyweds.

Lu Xia understood Jiang Junmo’s intentions and suddenly felt a bit shy, standing there motionless, unsure of what to do.

At that moment, Jiang Junmo returned, carrying a basin for footwashing. “Let’s wash our feet first,” he said.

Lu Xia nodded in response, sat on the edge of the kang to wash her feet, and then climbed onto the kang.

However, by the time Jiang Junmo went out to fetch water and returned after washing his own feet, he noticed that Lu Xia was still sitting on the kang.

“Why haven’t you laid down yet? It’s getting late, let’s sleep early,” he suggested.

Lu Xia hesitated but finally spoke up, “Where is my blanket?”

Jiang Jun Mo glanced at her and replied, “Oh, I put it away. We’re married now, so we can sleep under one blanket from now on.”

Lu Xia:… But for the past six months, they had been sleeping separately.

But before she could say anything, she heard Jiang Junmo ask with a hint of grievance, “Are you unwilling to share a bed with me?”

Lu Xia instinctively shook her head and said, “No, it’s just that I’m not used to it.”

Jiang Junmo smiled at her response. “It’s alright, I’m not used to it either. We’ll get used to it together.”

Still, Lu Xia wanted to voice her concerns, “Um, I don’t sleep very soundly, what if I accidentally kick you…”

“It’s okay, I don’t mind,” Jiang Junmo reassured her.

Chapter 154: Promises in the Darkness

.

Lu Xia: “…Okay, I can’t think of any more excuses to refuse.” Finally, she resigned herself to her fate, took off her jacket, and got into the quilt.

Fortunately, the bed was quite large, so they didn’t feel cramped while sharing the blanket.

After a while, Jiang Junmo blew out the candle and got into bed on the other side. He didn’t come too close, which eased the tension in Lu Xia’s body a bit.

The two of them lay there, not knowing how much time had passed. Lu Xia wasn’t feeling sleepy, probably because she had napped during the day. Then, she suddenly felt Jiang Junmo holding her hand.

Lu Xia became a bit nervous.

At that moment, Jiang Junmo gently asked, “Are you asleep, Xia Xia?”

Lu Xia: “…No.”

Jiang Junmo: “Neither am I.”

“…” Lu Xia was speechless. Of course, if you were asleep, you wouldn’t be able to talk!

Jiang Junmo seemed to realize that and couldn’t help but laugh.

“Xia Xia, I’m very happy.”

“Happy about what?”

“Happy that we are finally together!”

Lu Xia had trouble falling asleep, so she thought she’d chat with him for a while when she noticed he wanted to say something. But his straightforward words left her at a loss for how to respond.

Clearly, Jiang Junmo didn’t expect her to reply either. He continued talking, and she just listened quietly.

“In the past, I didn’t understand why my mother, after finding out my father had an accident, decided to go look for him right after giving birth to me and didn’t come back. As a child, I resented them, and I couldn’t understand why a mother could easily abandon her child like that.

“But now I understand. It was because of love. She didn’t not love me, but she loved my father more.

“She knew that even if I lost my parents, I still had my grandfather, uncle, and others, and I would live well. But without her husband, she couldn’t go on living.

“So she went…

“Xia Xia, I understand now. Because I have someone I love too.

“And what makes me even happier is that it’s not a one-sided affection. You like me back!”

Lu Xia blushed in the darkness upon hearing this. ‘What does he mean I like him back? Nonsense, when did I ever say that?!’

She was about to deny it, but Jiang Junmo continued, “Xia Xia, you’re someone who deserves to be cherished and is kind-hearted. I’m glad I chose to volunteer in the rural area, as it allowed me to meet you.”

As he said this, Lu Xia felt Jiang Junmo’s grip on her hand tighten.

“Xia Xia, I will treat you well. I’ll treat you well for the rest of my life. Let’s live a good life and be together forever, okay?”

In the darkness, Jiang Junmo waited for a response for a long time but didn’t hear anything.

Not knowing how much time had passed, just when he was about to lose hope, he finally heard Lu Xia’s voice.

“Okay…”

Jiang Junmo couldn’t contain his excitement and anxiety anymore. He couldn’t help but reach out and embrace her in his arms.

At the same time, Lu Xia was also filled with mixed emotions and joy.

In the beginning, when she married Jiang Junmo, she had the idea that marriage would help her avoid many troublesome things.

However, after spending time together, she gradually discovered that Jiang Junmo was actually excellent and a good person. She wasn’t a heartless creature, and naturally, she found herself increasingly drawn to him without even realizing it.

But deep down, she always felt that their relationship started somewhat dramatically, perhaps too casually, and she wasn’t entirely sure if this marriage could last.

Thus, when it came to their relationship as a couple and its future development, Lu Xia always had uncertainties.

  2. Welp that’s what happens when you choose someone just based on their looks, it’s weird really, he’s pretty much everything she wants but now that she sort of likes him she’s sad/worried that their initial relationship wasn’t some romantic event …. sigh, women folks, am I right or am I right ?
