Chapter 287 – Wang Wenpei

As the train was about to arrive, he merely embraced his grown-up junior disciple brother, patted his shoulder, and made an arrangement, “Let’s meet after we go back.”

Jiang Junmo responded with a smile, “Sure, Senior Brother, don’t worry. I’ll come find you once we’re back.”

Senior Brother Xu nodded, “Our teacher should be heading back soon as well. When that time comes, let’s all get together as disciple brothers.”

Jiang Junmo’s eyes brightened upon hearing this, restraining his excitement, “Great, it’s a promise.”

At this moment, Sister Qiu spoke many words of gratitude to Lu Xia, who simply shook her head and took out the prepared food.

“We made these this morning. You can eat them on the way back.”

Sister Qiu didn’t stand on ceremony and directly accepted, “Alright, thank you Xia Xia.”

Then, she continued, “After you all return, come visit my place. There are two grapevines in my yard, and the grapes they produce are so sweet. In the past, whenever they ripened, the little sisters would come over to eat. I wonder if they are still around…”

Lu Xia laughed, “I’ll definitely come. I love grapes the most.”

Sister Qiu smiled, and they chatted a bit more before the train arrived.

Lu Xia and the others saw them off onto the train, waved at the window, and as they disappeared from view, Sister Qiu opened the food Lu Xia had prepared. But what caught her eye was something wrapped in a handkerchief. Upon opening it, she found a familiar jade pendant…

On the way back, Lu Xia asked Jiang Junmo, “What kind of expression do you think Sister Qiu will have when she receives the jade pendant?”

Jiang Junmo shook his head, looking at her helplessly, “Aren’t you afraid they won’t eat the food or might lose it?”

Lu Xia shook her head, “Definitely not. I made sweet potato cakes, which Xiao Tian loves the most. The aroma is enough to be noticed from outside, so he’ll surely open and eat them as soon as he gets on the train.”

Jiang Junmo chuckled at her response, “You, really!”

About a month after Senior Brother Xu left, he sent a letter to Lu Xia and Jiang Junmo. He mentioned that everything was back to normal after they returned. Senior Brother Xu had resumed his work as an art teacher in a high school, Sister Qiu had found employment, and Xiao Tian had started school. Their teacher had also returned, and everything was well, waiting for his return.

Jiang Junmo was overjoyed upon hearing this and spun Lu Xia around in excitement.

It was the first time Lu Xia had seen him express such emotions openly, and she joined in his happiness.

Just as the two were celebrating the good news they heard…

Another piece of good news arrived from the educated youth spot.

Wang Wenpei, an educated youth who had gone to the countryside last year, was returning to the city!

Lu Xia was surprised to hear this; Wang Wenpei’s presence was usually quite low-key.

She hadn’t expected such a significant piece of news to come out of nowhere.

Immediately, Lu Xia went to the educated youth spot to inquire about the situation.

To her surprise, nobody knew. When they went to inform Wang Wenpei, she wasn’t there. They heard she was at the educated youth office handling paperwork.

If all went smoothly, she would leave tomorrow.

The news came from the village branch. They heard that her family had arranged a job for her.

People were envious upon hearing this news, but more than that, they were happy for her.

Wang Wenpei was different from Cheng Yujiao. Cheng Yujiao returned to the city first and then found a job before leaving.

Wang Wenpei had received a transfer notice from the city, but she hadn’t left yet.

So, the educated youth spot planned to hold a farewell party for her.

After all, they had spent a year together, and although it wasn’t long, everyone wanted to bid her a good farewell, just in case they needed to help each other in the future.

Upon hearing everyone’s plans, Lu Xia didn’t say much. She just brought plenty of eggs from home to prepare for a meal in the evening.

Chapter 288 – Farewell Gathering

.

When Wang Wenpei returned, she found the educated youth spot bustling with activity; even those who had moved out came back.

She heard that it was for her farewell party and felt touched by the gesture. She hadn’t interacted with everyone much over the past year, so she hadn’t expected them to do this.

After preparing the meal, everyone gathered happily to eat together. Once the meal was finished, someone finally couldn’t resist asking about Wang Wenpei’s return to the city.

That evening, Wang Wenpei was moved and nostalgic due to the attention she received from everyone. With her departure scheduled for the next day, she didn’t hold back and briefly shared her story…

Everyone then learned that her family’s background had not been good. They had gone to the farm previously, and she had stayed in the countryside. However, circumstances had changed, and now that the policies were different, her family had returned to the city and brought her along.

Lu Xia understood upon hearing this. She had suspected as much – Wang Wenpei didn’t seem like a child from an ordinary family. It turned out she had quite a story behind her understated demeanor.

Knowing the reason for her return, envy diminished among the others, and admiration took its place. After all, Wang Wenpei had seemed to be in a tougher situation before; now she had turned things around.

The group didn’t disperse; they rarely had such an opportunity to gather. They chatted for a while longer.

This was the first time the educated youth spot had so many people engaged in conversation. Surprisingly, it was lively. People freely shared anecdotes about their hometowns and discussed their future lives.

Even Shen Yifan, caught up in excitement, pulled out his harmonica and played a tune.

Even the younger ones, Kang Kang and Zhen Zhen, joined in the conversation more than usual.

In summary, that night, everyone set aside their past conflicts and mutual dislikes. As fellow educated youth, after sharing their experiences, they felt more connected to each other’s struggles.

Perhaps this period of life wasn’t extraordinarily wonderful, but many years later, even if they forgot each other’s names, they wouldn’t forget these youthful years…

Of course, Su Man and Gu Xiangnan didn’t speak much.

Su Man had interacted with everyone on an ordinary basis, so she didn’t have much to say. Gu Xiangnan, on the other hand, had been in a bad mood lately.

Since sending his mother away on the first day of the Lunar New Year, Su Man had told him that they should part ways. Her attitude had been resolute, and no matter how he tried to persuade her, it was in vain.

In the end, he had to move back to his original house. Of course, he didn’t explain this to others; they all assumed he had simply quarreled with Su Man.

Only he knew that Su Man had truly given up on him this time.

For a while, he felt disheartened and lost, unsure of how things had turned out this way.

The pressure from his family and his lover’s abandonment had nearly caused him to lose his sense of purpose in life.

Fortunately, maybe due to hearing about the situation at the educated youth spot, since his separation from Su Man, the Cheng family hadn’t continued pressuring the Gu family. This gave him a sigh of relief.

However, concerning Su Man, he was powerless. He didn’t know how to proceed and could only leave things as they were for now.

He knew that unless he resolved the matters with the Cheng family and Cheng Yujiao, there would be no resolution between him and Su Man…

After the farewell gathering, the next day, Wang Wenpei packed her things and left.

Now, only three girls remained at the educated youth spot.

And on that day, while Lu Xia was reading a newspaper, Sun Shengnan came over with Zhen Zhen.

As soon as she arrived, she complained, “I really can’t understand Liu Jun’s way of thinking. How can he be so dumb that he can’t even understand middle school math problems?”

Lu Xia smiled at her words, “If he doesn’t understand, he should start learning from the basics. If that doesn’t work, he can memorize everything. Eventually, he’ll get the hang of it.”

Sun Shengnan sighed at her response, “I’m not hiding it from you; I’m getting a bit anxious. Ever since the policy changed at the beginning of the year, I knew the exam was probably not far off, but Liu Jun isn’t taking it seriously. I’m afraid he won’t pass when the time comes.”

Lu Xia listened quietly for a moment, “There’s nothing you can do about that. If things don’t improve, you can scare him a bit. Tell him that you’ll leave on your own once you pass the exam and see how he reacts.”

Sun Shengnan chuckled, “That’s a good idea. I’ll say that when the time comes and see if he gets scared.”

With that, she left, holding her child.

  1. I’m glad Su Man is leaving Gu Xiangnan because he’s too wishy-washy. I just think that if his parents are forcing him to marry Cheng Yujiao then he had better tell both them and the Cheng family that she’ll just be guarding an empty bed and he won’t treat her kindly. If that’s the kind of son-in-law the Cheng family wants and the kind of husband that Cheng Yujiao wants in the end, then at least they should be prepared to pay the consequences.

    Thanks for the chapter! 😀
