Chapter 427 – Secondment

The next day, Lu Xia continued attending classes at school.

After school, she was once again called to the office by Teacher Li.

Chu Liangchen was also summoned.

Seeing Chu Liangchen, who had the same bewildered look on his face, Lu Xia could tell that he didn’t know what was going on either.

Could it be that the work they did for the travel agency earlier was not up to par, and now they were being summoned to account for it?

Lu Xia felt a bit anxious and doubtful.

Various speculations raced through her mind.

It wasn’t until they reached Teacher Li’s office, knocked on the door, and entered that they realized there was another person inside. Although this person wasn’t very old, they were sitting upright and dressed quite formally, giving off an air of authority that made Lu Xia even more nervous.

After Teacher Li greeted them, she pointed to the person in the room and said, “This is Chief Li, an officer from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He has something to discuss with you.”

Lu Xia only then learned this person’s identity, and she felt a sudden surge of nervousness.

She hadn’t expected him to be from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which explained his imposing demeanor.

Chief Li smiled at them and said, “Hello, I believe you’re both wondering why I’ve asked to speak with you?”

Lu Xia nodded and, thinking about the clients they had hosted over the weekend, wondered if this had something to do with them.

He continued, “Last weekend, which was yesterday, you both hosted two groups of clients who came to China for an inspection, right?”

Both of them nodded instinctively, their expressions tense.

Seeing their reactions, Chief Li smiled and reassured them, “Don’t be nervous. I’m here with good news. You both did exceptionally well, and those two groups of clients were very satisfied with your service.”

Relieved, Lu Xia let out a sigh of relief but still felt a bit tense. She had never been in such a significant role before, and she wasn’t sure what to expect or how to handle such a situation. What if she messed up or made a mistake at such an important event?

Seemingly aware of her concerns, Chief Li smiled again and said, “Don’t worry. When you go to the Ministry, you won’t be solely responsible for attending to clients. You’ll be assisting and helping to showcase the best of our country to the clients, under the guidance of a supervisor.”

Lu Xia felt a weight lifted from her shoulders. So, they would essentially be supporting roles, and even though it was a significant opportunity, it was also a valuable one. They both nodded and agreed.

“Alright, Chief Li, we’ll follow the organization’s arrangements,” Lu Xia replied.

Chief Li nodded, discussed the details of the upcoming task, and then prepared to leave.

Before he left, he gave Chu Liangchen a reassuring look and said, “Student Chu, if you have any questions or concerns, you can always reach out to Deputy Director Chu. No need to be nervous.”

After he left, Teacher Li provided some guidance and assured them that the school would help with their leave, then let them go.

As they left, Lu Xia couldn’t help but glance at Chu Liangchen curiously, pondering the meaning behind Chief Li’s words.

Chu Liangchen scratched his nose, knowing there was no way to hide the truth. So, he explained, “My older brother also works at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”

Lu Xia had already suspected that Chu Liangchen came from a well-connected family, but she hadn’t expected that someone in his family would work for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Expressing her admiration, she said, “So, Deputy Director Chu, as mentioned by Chief Li, is your older brother? That’s impressive! To become a director at such a young age.”

Chu Liangchen thought for a moment and replied, “Well… my older brother is twelve years older than me.”

“Ah, I see,” Lu Xia said. It made sense for someone his age to hold such a position.

“No wonder your English is so good. Having that kind of learning environment is a great advantage.”

Chu Liangchen proudly raised his chin and said, “My older brother says I have a lot of talent. I’ll work hard to join the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the future.”

Lu Xia nodded in admiration, “Keep it up!”

Chapter 428 – The Meaning of Effort

.

After Lu Xia finished speaking, she couldn’t help but think about the opportunity they had received. They were just second-year college students, yet they had been chosen for such an important task. She asked, “Could this be arranged by your older brother?”

Chu Liangchen immediately gave her a stern look and replied, “How could that be? My older brother would never abuse his authority.”

Feeling reassured by his response, Lu Xia said, “That’s good to hear. I’m sorry for jumping to conclusions. Anyway, I should get going. See you tomorrow.”

Chu Liangchen nodded and then nodded towards Jiang Junmo, who had been waiting downstairs for a while. He didn’t say anything and left.

Jiang Junmo had actually been waiting there for a while, feeling a bit anxious as he hadn’t seen Lu Xia for some time. However, Lu Xia’s roommate, Yu Wan, had spotted him and informed him that she had been called away by a teacher, so he had been waiting patiently.

When Lu Xia and Chu Liangchen emerged from the building, Jiang Junmo noticed them but refrained from approaching them immediately. Since he had met Chu Liangchen before, he didn’t think much of their conversation.

It wasn’t until they were on their way home that Lu Xia excitedly told Jiang Junmo about her secondment to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Jiang Junmo then understood, “Was that classmate today also part of it?”

Lu Xia nodded, “Yes, he speaks English very well, and I just found out that someone in his family works at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. That explains why his spoken English is so good.”

Jiang Junmo nodded and remained silent.

Lu Xia was quite animated, and she talked non-stop on the way back home. When she returned, she shared the good news with her family.

Grandfather Jiang was delighted and asked Aunt Wang to buy some meat to celebrate.

Uncle and Aunt Jiang also praised her.

Even little Kang Kang, who didn’t understand much, chimed in, “Mommy, you’re amazing!”

It wasn’t until bedtime that Lu Xia realized that Jiang Junmo had been unusually quiet throughout the evening.

A bit worried, she asked, “What’s wrong? Are you feeling down?”

Jiang Junmo looked at her with a deep expression and shook his head, “No, I’m just feeling a bit sentimental. It seems like you’re becoming more and more outstanding, and I might not measure up anymore…”

Lu Xia heard this and immediately gave him a pat on the shoulder, “What are you talking about? Who’s measuring up to whom? You’re so good-looking and talented in so many ways. It’s obvious that I’m the one who can’t measure up to you. I’m constantly afraid that you’ll leave me and even consider hiding you from others, so no one else can see you!”

Jiang Junmo finally chuckled when he heard this, “Is that how you really feel?”

“Of course!” Lu Xia nodded seriously, “Don’t you know how envious everyone in our class, no, in our entire college is of me? Everyone knows that I have a husband who is exceptionally good-looking and treats me so well. Not only do you pick me up from school every day, but you also pamper me like a little girl.”

Jiang Junmo couldn’t help but laugh at her compliments.

“You!” Lu Xia was relieved when she saw him smile, and then looked at him and said, “Don’t think too much, what I said is true. In fact, I have always felt that I am not worthy of you. You are so smart and know a lot. I feel like I have nothing to compare to in front of you.

But it’s fortunate that you’ve always been good to me and willing to pamper me. It’s because of this that I want to work even harder. I can’t fall behind you, and I can’t embarrass you.

Actually, you are the motivation for my efforts!”

Jiang Junmo couldn’t hold back any longer and hugged her tightly.

“Thank you, why are you so wonderful, Xia Xia…”

“You’re pretty great too, Mo Mo…”

Afterward, neither of them said anything. They both understood each other’s thoughts and the meaning of their efforts. They wouldn’t dwell on these things anymore. They would strive to become better for each other.

What they could do was support each other and trust each other when needed. For each other’s sake, they would become better versions of themselves!
