Chapter 139 – The Envy of the Villagers

Others understood what she said, but even though they understood, they still envied her. After all, not everyone could afford to spend so much money on meat at once.

Seeing this, the village chief chuckled and said, “Do you all want pork, or do you want wild boar meat?”

Lu Xia shook her head and replied, “No, we want pork. Wild boar meat is too tough, and I don’t like it.”

The village chief nodded, and the accountant calculated the price. Lu Xia paid the money, and the person responsible for cutting the meat had already prepared it. The two of them then carried the meat and left amidst the envy of the others.

It cost nearly 10 yuan!

The elderly people in the village looked at Lu Xia as if she were a spendthrift woman.

But the young people envied the couple, thinking that they were living a good life without elderly supervision, and their city relatives often took care of them.

Living a life without worries about food and clothing was indeed enviable!

However, when they thought about Lu Xia and her partner’s status as educated youths who were enduring hardships in the countryside and not knowing when they could return, and considering that the man’s health was not good, so he couldn’t earn many work points, they felt the envy fade away.

Everyone didn’t pay much attention anymore.

After Lu Xia and her partner returned home with the meat, they were both very happy.

“We can eat for a while with this. Let’s make a delicious meal tonight to satisfy our cravings,” Lu Xia said.

Jiang Junmo thought for a moment and said, “There are still a few days until the New Year, let’s save it for the New Year’s celebration.”

“It’s alright, it’s enough. Besides, there are only a few days left. We haven’t had meat in several days, and I’m really craving it,” Lu Xia insisted.

Jiang Junmo smiled and agreed, “Alright then, let’s cook it.”

Lu Xia glanced at him and asked, “Are you cooking, or am I cooking? We don’t have many vegetables at home. Pork stir-fried with chili peppers tastes the best. Oh, I almost forgot, we should have bought some bones. We have so much sauerkraut at home; we should stew it with the pork.”

Jiang Junmo listened to her and chuckled, “What you thought of, others would have thought of too. Bones are cheap, haven’t you seen so many people in the village buying them? They’re all waiting to buy them.”

Lu Xia suddenly realized, “That’s right, even if we go back now, we won’t get any. Forget it, it’s fine. Having some meat is good enough; otherwise, we’ll get tired of eating only sauerkraut.”

Jiang Junmo smiled and shook his head, “Tonight, I’ll make a pork stew with cabbage.”

“Okay, you do it!”

That day, most families in the village cooked meat, and the whole village was filled with the aroma of meat.

The educated youths spot also bought a considerable amount of meat, but they pooled their money to buy it. Each house had only two pots, and since they lived together to save firewood, they couldn’t cook separately. So, they all ate together, although the boys and girls sat separately.

This time, the female educated youths collectively bought ten catties of wild boar meat, and even Cheng Yujiao, who had very few work points, contributed money.

That evening, when they were having dinner, Cheng Yujiao heard that the wild boar meat was brought back by Su Man after she dug a trap, and her expression turned sour.

“I knew this meat tasted so bad, and it has a weird smell. So, it was brought back by her. No wonder!”

Yu Fang, who served her food, remained expressionless as if she hadn’t heard it.

But another girl in the room, Sun Shengnan, overheard it.

Finding the words very unpleasant, she frowned and said, “If you don’t like it, then don’t eat it.”

But Cheng Yujiao just sneered and replied, “I also contributed money, why shouldn’t I eat it? I will eat it! But there’s so little meat. Are you deliberately giving me such a small portion? No, I see what you’re doing. You’re bullying me because I can’t stand up straight. I’ll have to talk to Brother Xiangnan about this.”

Chapter 140 – Sun Shengnan’s Hesitation

.

After listening to all of this, Sun Shengnan initially wanted to explain, but she stopped herself and eventually decided not to bother.

“Suit yourself, do whatever you want,” she said and then left.

Yu Fang, the girl who remained, spoke expressionlessly, “I’ll clean up after you finish eating.”

Then she also left.

Lying on the kang, Cheng Yujiao was so angry that she almost threw her food away.

But in the end, she restrained herself and resolved with gritted teeth that once she was better, she would make these people who bu.llied her pay!

Meanwhile, the day before, Lu Xia was curious why Su Man had given the meat to the village directly, and the next day she learned the reason from Sun Shengnan.

Sun Shengnan had come to talk to her. It was almost New Year’s, and several older educated youths in the village were planning to go home to visit their families.

As long as their time in the countryside exceeded one year, they could take a leave to visit home. However, they had to return in time; otherwise, they would be sent back, and it could leave a negative record in their political evaluations.

Sun Shengnan had not gone home in these years, and this year, she initially planned to go back, but because she had bought a wedding gift for her younger sister earlier, it made her a bit financially tight, so she was hesitant.

The female educated youths, including Chen Xue, planned to go back as well. Both their hometowns were in the south, so it was convenient for them to go back together. Some male educated youths were also planning to go back.

The rest of them decided to stay in the village for the New Year.

Sun Shengnan was uncertain about her decision and hadn’t decided whether to go back or not. Since she didn’t have someone to discuss it with, she thought of Lu Xia.

Although Lu Xia had only been in the countryside for half a year, from Sun Shengnan’s observations, Lu Xia seemed to be a person with clear ideas. Despite being a new educated youth, she adapted the fastest and was currently living the best among all the new educated youths.

Therefore, she wanted to ask Lu Xia for her opinion.

When Lu Xia heard that Sun Shengnan, who usually had a strong opinion, came to ask for her advice, she was somewhat surprised.

But then she sighed.

As expected, when it came to family and emotions, even the most rational people could become emotionally driven.

She didn’t know much about Sun Shengnan’s family, but based on what she had heard last time and the things she had seen and heard, it seemed that Sun Shengnan’s family had probably given up on her. However, she still held onto hope for her family.

Otherwise, she wouldn’t have sent back all the valuable things she had obtained over the years, like wild goods, to her family.

With these thoughts in mind, Lu Xia sighed and suggested, “You should go back and visit.”

Sun Shengnan seemed surprised by her words and said, “I thought you would persuade me not to go back?”

“Why would I say that?”

“I asked others before coming here, and they all advised me not to go back.”

Lu Xia raised an eyebrow; she knew what others meant. They were afraid that Sun Shengnan would be heartbroken if she went back.

But that was just how people were. When they hadn’t seen something for a long time, they would always be worried about it. Only when they saw it with their own eyes and experienced it firsthand would they know the truth. Some blows could only be understood when personally experienced, and sometimes it was only after a real disappointment that one could make a decisive judgment.

So, Lu Xia smiled and said, “You’ve been in the countryside for so many years. If you miss your family, then go back and visit. However, there will be many people on the train during the New Year, and it might not be safe. When you go back, don’t bring too many things with you. Just bring a couple of sets of clean clothes.”

Sun Shengnan exclaimed, “Ah, I was thinking of saving up some money to buy some wild goods to bring back. Would it be bad if I return empty-handed?”

“How could that be? You are their daughter. They will be very happy to have you back after so many years, and you have also sent many things back to your family over the years. This little thing won’t matter.”

“Is that so? Alright then, I’ll listen to you.”

    1. Erm, is it (tactful)? Her advice in this chapter has risen SWG’s expectation for her family’s love while she (LX) also believes that they have given up on her (SWG). It’d be all good if her family welcomed her well and treated her good in this visit. But, if they didn’t, on top of letting SWG “fall after risen her high”, there’s a possibility that would make a crack in SWG and LX’s friendship.

Ofc, it’s the best for SWG to travel lightly this time. But, I hope LX’ll give her some mental/emotional “immunization”. As LX herself know, when it’s related to the people you’re greatly attached (mentally and emotionally), even the most rational person can be hesitant (indecisive).

  1. I can understand that Lu Xia doesn’t quite understand how to deal with family. After all, she was originally an orphan and her cheap instant family here were awful, but I feel like she’s underestimating how soul crushing it’d be for someone like Sun Shengnan who has been missing her family for 4 years to realize that they no longer care about her…
