Chapter 315 – Sisters-in-Law and Brothers-in-law
After packing up their things, the two of them came downstairs. Grandpa Jiang and the others weren’t around, only Aunt Wang was preparing lunch ingredients.
Seeing this, Lu Xia was about to help, but Aunt Wang quickly declined.
She didn’t insist, and then the two of them chatted for a while.
It was during this conversation that Lu Xia learned that although Aunt Wang was officially sent by the country to take care of Grandpa Jiang, her salary and everything else were provided by the Jiang family. So, she wasn’t only responsible for cooking for Grandpa Jiang.
It was just a pretense to hire a nanny under this pretext to avoid criticism.
Moreover, Aunt Wang herself was related to a martyr and received special consideration from the government. It was a form of employment, and both parties were satisfied.
So, she was grateful to the Jiang family.
After chatting with her for a while, since there was nothing else to help with, Lu Xia went to see Jiang Junmo.
At that moment, he was on the phone. Even though he had previously informed his sisters about their return time through letters, he still felt the need to personally inform them now that they had returned. He made four consecutive phone calls, asking them to come over and meet in the evening.
When Lu Xia arrived, he had just finished the calls.
“How are they?” she asked.
“They’re doing well. They’re all very happy to know I’m back. They’ll come over tonight,” he replied.
Taking advantage of the moment, Jiang Junmo briefly introduced his sisters and their husbands to Lu Xia, so she wouldn’t get confused later.
The eldest sister worked in the workers’ union at the steel factory in Beijing. Her husband was an engineer at the factory. They currently had three children: two sons and a daughter.
The second sister worked in the Women’s Federation, and her husband was in the police force. He was currently the captain of a police squadron in Beijing. They had two sons.
The third sister worked in the logistics department of a department store, and her husband was a driver working at a transportation station. Most of the things Lu Xia had sent to them previously were arranged by the third sister. They also had two sons, and they were the only couple among the sisters who had twins.
The fourth sister was a nurse, and her husband was a doctor. They had a son and a daughter.
Listening to all this, Lu Xia was a bit surprised. She had thought her sisters-in-law had married into well-off families, but it turned out their husbands were quite ordinary.
She voiced her thoughts and asked Jiang Junmo about it. After all, the Jiang family seemed well-to-do, so shouldn’t they have sought matches from similarly well-off families?
Jiang Junmo chuckled in response. “Actually, none of the sisters had their marriages arranged by the family. The Jiang family doesn’t particularly emphasize matching social status. The eldest sister and her husband, as well as the fourth sister and her husband, met through work connections. The second sister’s husband was a childhood friend. He also comes from a family with some social standing, and he had served in the military before pursuing the second sister. They got together after his return.”
Understanding this, Lu Xia felt reassured. As per Jiang Junmo’s explanations, her sisters-in-law seemed to be doing well, so she felt relieved.
Once she had learned about all her sisters-in-law and their husbands, Grandpa Jiang returned with Kang Kang.
Both the young and the old had smiles on their faces, appearing quite happy.
Kang Kang ran over to Lu Xia and exclaimed, “Mom, dogs!”
Lu Xia was puzzled. “What dogs?”
“At Grandpa Dong’s house, there are dogs!”
Just then, Grandpa Jiang from behind added, “The Dong family has two retired military dogs. Kang Kang really likes them. One of these days, Grandpa will help you choose a couple of dogs too. We’ll raise them from a young age!”
“Okay, let’s raise them!” Kang Kang’s voice was enthusiastic, clearly delighted!
Lu Xia helplessly said, “Grandpa, you don’t have to spoil him.”
Grandpa Jiang waved his hand dismissively. “What’s wrong with getting a couple of dogs? I’ve wanted to have some for a while now. We just didn’t find the right ones before. Since Kang Kang likes them too, I’ll look for some good ones.”
Hearing his response, Lu Xia could only stay silent.
Chapter 316 – Grandpa Jiang’s Showing Off
Seeing the situation, Jiang Junmo smiled and commented, “Those two dogs at Grandpa Dong’s house are still there, they’re surprisingly tough.”
“Yeah, they do nothing but eat and sleep every day. Living in retirement is quite comfortable with people to wait on them for eating, drinking, and even taking care of their biological needs. They’re living more comfortably than me,” Grandpa Jiang sighed.
“Well, you can also enjoy retirement that comfortably,” Jiang Junmo added.
Grandpa Jiang quickly waved his hand, “Enough of that, I can’t sit still.”
Then he looked at Lu Xia, “Xiao Lu, just relax here at home. Our family isn’t one to nitpick. Feel free to make yourself comfortable.”
Lu Xia nodded, “I understand, Grandpa.”
During lunchtime, Grandpa Jiang noticed that Lu Xia was eating without hesitation, quite casually. He smiled with satisfaction. After the meal, he said, “If you’re tired, rest at home. If not, you can go out for a stroll. Xiao Yu can send you.”
Jiang Junmo nodded, “I need to go and pick up some luggage this afternoon.”
Grandpa Jiang understood, “You can also visit your third sister and see if there’s anything she needs. Get some things for her.”
“Not today, let’s talk about it another time.”
“Alright, handle it as you see fit.”
Afterward, Grandpa Jiang went for a nap. Lu Xia and Jiang Junmo took Kang Kang back to their room to rest for a while.
In the afternoon, after waking up, Grandpa Jiang took Kang Kang out to visit others.
Lu Xia and Jiang Junmo took a car to retrieve their luggage.
During the ride, Jiang Junmo noticed Lu Xia lost in thought and couldn’t help but worry, “What’s wrong?”
Still thinking about the cheerful sight of Kang Kang and Grandpa Jiang leaving, Lu Xia felt a bit emotional. “I didn’t expect Kang Kang to adapt so quickly.”
Jiang Junmo chuckled, “Shouldn’t that make you feel relieved?”
After a moment’s thought, Lu Xia agreed. From then on, she let go of her worries.
After picking up the luggage from the post office, they found they had quite a bit. They hadn’t even discarded the blankets. After all, whether brought by Lu Xia or sent by the Jiang family, they were all made of high-quality cotton.
It all added up to several large packages.
Luckily, they had come by car.
When they returned to the courtyard, they saw Grandpa Jiang and Kang Kang walking a dog with an elderly man. There were several people around them engaged in conversation.
Seeing Grandpa Jiang’s proud expression as he walked Kang Kang, it was clear he was showing off.
Lu Xia glanced at Jiang Junmo and noticed a helpless smile in his eyes, so he probably realized it too.
As they got closer to home, they got out of the car directly, intending to greet Grandpa Jiang and their neighbors.
Seeing them get out of the car, the people in the courtyard were somewhat surprised.
Especially towards Jiang Junmo—everyone knew what he used to be like. They couldn’t believe that after just one trip to the countryside, he had changed so much. Now he looked just like a regular person, even more robust and sturdy than normal.
Others were puzzled, thinking that people usually lose weight after traveling to rural areas due to fatigue. But here was Jiang Junmo, who had become strong and robust. Could it be that a trip to the countryside could improve one’s physical fitness?
Although everyone was puzzled, they didn’t show it.
Instead, they warmly greeted them.
Meanwhile, Grandpa Dong, upon seeing them, exclaimed in surprise, “Junmo, you’ve gained some muscle. Not bad at all, that’s great!”
Jiang Junmo also smiled, “Hello, Grandpa Dong. This is my wife, Lu Xia.”
Lu Xia followed suit, “Hello, Grandpa Dong.”
Grandpa Dong nodded with a smile, “Good, all good. It’s good that you’re back. I heard you came back after getting into a university. Perfect, both of you are university students now. Study well and make contributions to the country’s development.”
Jumping to such grand ambitions, both of them didn’t know what to say and could only nod with smiles.
